Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - May 2, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 2, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Lots of news today, so here we go.

In the news, we'll look at how you can use Vonage to call Europe for free. We'll find out about a Vonage-compatible speaker phone, and then also check to see in which states Vonage may start charging a sales tax. We'll also look at  two Vonage Forum threads, one about saving Vonage voice mails, the other about router configuration.

In The News

Vonage Announces Free Calls To Europe

Earlier today I posted this information from Vonage, in a Vonage Forum thread I opened called NEW! Free Calls To Europe!

Now with our Unlimited plans, calling to Europe with Vonage isn't international, it's local. We've added millions of more people to your local calling plan for free. By waiving international fees to Italy, France, Spain, UK and Ireland, Vonage treats calls to these countries just like traditional local calls throughout the US. So calls to Paris cost the same as calls to your neighbor down the street - nothing!
Calling is Easy

Dialing to Europe is easy. There are no special access numbers to dial. So call Europe all you want. With Vonage it's all included, FREE!

Details

Free calls to Europe offer does not apply to calls to cell phone numbers or to special services numbers such as toll-free or caller-paid information services or 900 numbers, and is limited to Italy, France, Spain, UK and Ireland. Valid for Unlimited plans only.

ClearOne Rolls Out Vonage-Compatible Speaker Phone

ClearOne has come out with a $150 speaker phone that is compatible with a variety of devices. The Chat 50 is a full-duplex (which means you don’t have to take turns speaking to and listening to the other person on the line) USB speakerphone that is usable with Vonage.

Depending On Where You Live, Vonage May Start Collecting Sales Tax

We ran this yesterday but here is some more information.

On or about May 1st, Vonage will begin charging taxes to Vonage customers in various states across the US.  State and local governments may assess taxes, surcharges and/or fees on use of Vonage service. These charges may be a flat fee or a percentage of Vonage charges and may change from time to time without notice. These charges are based on the rates applicable to the address provided to us.

Vonage then lists the states where sales taxes may apply: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and West Virginia.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Sheblardin would like to start saving his Vonage voice mail. To get some tips on how to do this, he then started a thread that he calls, Download and saving voicemail.

"Anyone out there have suggestions in saving voicemail to my hard drive or CD's expeditiously," Sheblardin writes, getting right to the point.

Veteran Vonage Forum Member scerruti sees the thread and jumps in.

"There are several commercial programs out there that download your voicemail. VM Rover comes to mind," scerruti writes. "You might want to check them out and see if any of them will allow you to access the VMs from your hard drive. I expect the answer is yes.

Then scerruti adds that Sheblardin could turn on VM notification with attachments and receive the VMs in his email. "That would simplify the process of ensuring they were all available on your computer," scerruti adds.

Vonage Forum Member tstrike has a new router, but along with his new router he has some questions. That's why he's fired up a thread named General Motorola VT1005 Questions.

"My first question is I was curious if anyone has had any problems, voice quality and such with the Motorola," tstrike writes.

"Secondly, the administration page is very generic. I noticed it is technically a router, but does it have QoS built in and firewall features?," he asks. "Even though I'm using it behind my WRT54G, I was just curious if it has those features since they aren't listed in the Admin pages.

And then tstrike has a third question:

"Lastly, can the Administration pages be accessed remotely or only through the LAN side which looks like it can only use 192.168.100.x?," he asks.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member netwalker9999 answers.

"It is very hard to configure this device. I used it behind my WRT54G router. I did not use the firewall in the VT1005," netwalker9999 writes, then specifying:

cable -->cable modem-->router-->VT1005

"I did set it up with a static IP address so that I could forward ports and do QOS, from the Linksys to the Motorola," he adds.

"The VT1005 has a default LAN IP address of 192.168.102.1," netwalker9999 points out. "When you connect your PC, set the PC up with a static IP address in the range of 192.168.102.n where n is 2-254. Then point your browser to the 102.1 address and it should work. Do not put a switch or router between the two, they should be direct connected."

Then netwalker9999 adds some perspective from his own experience with the VT1005.

"I used the VT1005 for about a year and then swapped it out for a P2P," netwalker9999 writes. "The voice quality was very good, slightly better than the P2P."

"However, I had problems with choppy sound on incoming calls, which have gone away now," he adds.

Have Vonage-Related Wiring Issues? Check Out Our Hard-Wiring-Installation Forum

Over the years (three years plus and counting, actually) I've noticed many threads with questions about wiring-related issues. Sometimes these are questions from new Vonage Forum Members, other times from experienced Vonage users who are moving into a new home or apartment, and want to ensure that any wiring issues related to the Vonage service are resolved before they move.

And yes, there are those Vonage users who have encountered wiring problems and incompatibilities.

For questions related to wiring, we have a Hard Wiring-Installation Forum section here on the Vonage Forum. You can go right to the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum by clicking here.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest !!
