Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 27, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

But first the news. Lots going on today. We'll take a look at how net neutrality legislation favored by Vonage is doing, read about a major expansion of Vonage access availability in the U.K., and catch up on the Vonage-blocking controversy in a nation that up until recently was ruled by the U.K.- Belize. We'll also look at  a Vonage Forum thread about what might be causing choppy audio on a user's Vonage calls, and how to perform a hard-reset on a router used with the Vonage service.

In The News

Net Neutrality Loses a Round

Yesterday, a U.S. Congressional Committee defeated a proposal to enact net neutrality laws. Favored by Vonage and other large broadband services and content companies, the measure would have prohibited large broadband service providers from setting rate plans in motion that would favor some companies' Internet traffic over others. A similar bill is in play in the U.S. Senate, and several petition drives are also underway.

Vonage UK Offers Free Service at The Cloud Wi-Fi Hotspots

Vonage UK says it is partnering with British Wi-Fi provider The Cloud to offer its customers free service at any hotspot operated by the company.

Beginning next month, Vonage customers will be able to use their selected local geographical phone numbers to make Voip calls from any of The Cloud’s national network of over 7,000 Wi-Fi hotspots.

Vonage users will access The Cloud’s network via their Wi-Fi phone as soon as they are within range. There will be no password or user logon process; users will pick up the Wi-Fi signal strength and be able to make and receive calls immediately. Pricing will be included in the standard £7.99 a month “Residential Unlimited” package from Vonage, which includes unlimited calls to UK and Irish landlines as well as to other Vonage customers wherever they are in the world.

The deal between Vonage and The Cloud will see Vonage customers using their Wi-Fi phone whenever they are in range of a hotspot from The Cloud. These include all major UK airports, First Great Western train stations, Coffee Republic outlets, Little Chef cafes, Swallow Hotels, as well as over 4,000 pubs and regional hotels across the country.

In addition to conventional Wi-Fi coverage, The Cloud is also launching a number of city centre hot zones in Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Oxford, along with the London boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, Camden and Islington.

Later this year The Cloud will be deploying a ground-breaking Wi-Fi network across the entire Square Mile in London – all of which will be accessible to Vonage users.

Belize Public Utilities Commission Takes Vonage Blocking Testimony

Yesterday, the Belize Public Utilities Commission held a hearing on charges that broadband Internet service provider BTL has been blocking calls over Vonage and other services. BTL was invited to attend, but they chose not to. Instead, some prominent local citizens showed up- most of which were quite angry at what they consider to be VoIP-blocking practices on the part of BTL.

The Belize Free Internet Consortium was there, and posts some highlights:

Kevin Harris, University of Belize: "We recommend that all blocks to VoIP services such as voice be removed immediately. Voip can enhance Belize's educational services and economy and we should not be concerned about the consumer's use of their purchased bandwidth."

Michael Kong, from a local ISP: "The issue before us today is if Belizeans will be allowed to enjoy the benefits of this telecommunications technology, commonly referred to as Voip and will the laws and regulations be enacted and other steps taken to deprive us of this activity. The internet service providers of Belize believe we need to legalize Voip services and allow ISPs to deliver their services to their customer. We recommend regulate, not terminate."

Niall Gillett, citizen activist: "We as citizens in this nation have a constitutional freedom and that is to associate, communicate, and correspond and that is what this whole thing is about. Regardless of the noise about packets and other excuses, this is all about being able to pay for an internet connection and using it to transmit and receive packets of data regardless of the type."

We have a Vonage Forum thread on the subject. It's right here.

Speaking of, let's go and see what some of you are talking about on the Forum.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Comcast / little rock: choppy calls, dropped calls etc, new Vonage Forum Member pvn describes what has been going on.

"I have been having trouble with my Comcast/Vonage combo (in Little Rock, AR) similar to what is described in the early portions of the "Comcast vs. Vonage" thread for a couple of weeks now, and they are getting progressively worse," he writes.

"I am using a Linksys BEFCMU10 cable modem, with a Linksys WRT54GS router. The Cisco ATA 186 (which I've had since December of 2002) is plugged directly into the WRT54GS," pvn explains. "Line 1 on the ATA is plugged directly into a Panasonic 2-line cordless phone system. Line 2 on the Cisco ATA is a number that I ported from SBC, and I have a cable from the ATA to a splitter, and the split line goes into the Panasonic 2-line system and into a wall jack, and the house wiring is physically disconnected from the Telco network (I've been disconnected from SBC since October of 2005).

Then pvn says that he personally don't use the phone very much, but his wife does. She has been complaining of choppy voice quality for a couple of weeks, and more recently she has had dropped calls. "Occasionally the party on the other end reports that her voice will disappear for a few seconds, then get "caught up" as if it were a tape being played at an increased speed. The problems seem to be the worst when I'm not home (of course), which means regular business hours," he writes.

Add to that, pvn says he personally has seen dropped calls when using the phone for long (30 min+) conference calls, usually in the morning. "Sometimes the line just goes dead, occasionally I get a fast busy signal."

"I have Sveasoft Talisman firmware on my WRT54GS, and have implemented QOS on that box, giving the Vonage ATA highest priority, above everything else on the network," he writes. "This does not seem to have any effect. Generally when my wife is using the phone there is little other activity on the local network.

Neither has pvn had much luck with Comcast support as of yet.

He then posts detailed results of his test.

Steve48 notices pvn's posts, reviews it, and then makes his own post with some suggestions for pvn.

"Your packet discard on the uplink are high enough to explain the problem," Steve48 writes. "Try removing the router temporarily and plugging your computer directly into the modem. Repeat the test and see if results are similar. If they are, then I would diagnose an ISP problem (including the modem as their responsibility)."

But then Steve48 adds, "dealing with your ISP is, of course, another whole issue. If you have symptoms other than phone call issues, such as poor television reception, you should probably focus on them. Your upload speed looks pretty puny. Do they guarantee any better."

Pvn posts again, saying he will follow Steve48's suggestions.

Vonage Forum Member manukrish wanted to ensure he went about a hard reset of his RTP300 correctly. To get the best advice, he started a thread called How to do a Hard Reset of RTP300.

"Does anyone know how to do a hard reset of RTP300," manukrish asks as his thread-opening question.

NateHoy then came on board, offering either of these choices:

1. Press and hold the reset button for more than 30 seconds while the unit is powered up.

2. Log into the Web interface, go to the "Administration" page, and perform a "factory reset" from the factory reset sub-page.

Well, good news. "Thanks for the information. It worked. I was struggling with a nasty problem," manukrish writes in his follow-up post. "After the reset the problem is resolved."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

In the thread Comcast / little rock: choppy calls, dropped calls etc, pvn was able to get some detailed advice after he posted a thread with his testyourvoip results. In fact, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature !!
