Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - April 26, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 26, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First of all, I have some great news. This morning, around 4:30 a.m. Eastern Time, our 26,000th Member joined the Vonage Forum. That Member is Kent99999

I was around when Kent joined, and our Members box showed 26000. I took a screen grab of it. Here it is:

Welcome, Kent99999! I see you have already started an interesting thread. We'll highlight it below.

But first the news. We'll catch up on a wild and fun Vonage promotion at a leading game developer convention. we'll catch up on a Vonage Canada promotion that if you sign up for Vonage service, you'll get 20 free music downloads. We'll also catch up with that big Belize Vonage-blocking hearing that will take place tomorrow. We'll also look at  a Vonage Forum thread about phone switch issues, and another one about connection procedures for his new VTech phone he would like to use with his Vonage service.

Vonage To Set Wired-Up Gamer Loose On Gamer Trade Show Floor

Vonage has announced it will be sponsoring the E3 Expo 2006 press room phone service. It will also sponsor the FanCam, a wired up gamer set loose on the trade show floor wearing orange apparel featuring Vonage's logo. His helmet will contain mounted micro-cameras capturing his happenings while playing games, interviewing developers, as well as going behind the scenes. He will be making calls using his Vonage Wi-Fi phone to answer gamer submitted questions. In the pressroom, Vonage will be demonstrating its products including Wi-Fi phones and telephone adaptors.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

When we get a new Member that helps us reach a "thousand" member threshold, I generally like to highlight his or her threads and/or posts.

So happens our 26,000th Member, Kent99999 made his debut on the Vonage Forum today with an interesting thread he has entitled, one way phone switch? what can i use?

"I am having the following problem with my home Voip setup. I use an outgoing Voip line and a regular phone line incoming phone/fax line. I have installed an AX520 2 line switch so I can answer both lines with the one phone handset," Kent99999 writes.

"The problem I am having is that when I am using the Voip line out, the regular phone line gives and engaged signal because it is plugged into the AX520 2 line switch," he explains. "This means I cannot receive incoming calls/faxes on the regular fax line."

Kent then asks if there is any way he can put a filter / switch / anything in between the regular line and the 2 line switch so when the Voip line is busy the regular line phone calls will go to the fax/or second handset.

He then includes a rough schematic to help illustrate the point. He has posted it at:

No replies yet, but I think it is great that we have a new member who has taken the time out to provide a schematic. How much do you want to bet we solve our 26,000th Member's problem quickly?

New Vonage Forum Member twn2 wanted to go to "town" with his new VTech IP8100 phone- and connect it to his Vonage service. So he's opened a thread that he's named  need help connecting IP8100 with existing service.

"I went to Best Buy and bought an IP8100 due to the reviews and the simplicity. I also have the RT31P2 which is connected now to Vonage (for the past 8 months)," explains twn2.

Next, twn2 poses his question.

"My sticking point is how do I swap information over from the Linksys to the VTech??? I use the Linksys RT31P2 as a router for 2 other computers and I was going to plug the 8100 into the extra port," he writes. "But I'm not sure if that's going to cause a problem with my Vonage account. My thought was to plug in the 8100 into the extra port then unplug my phone from the RT31P2.

As he does so often and so well, Vonage Forum Member NateHoy steps right up with an answer.

"If you are looking to transfer your existing account, you simply need to call Customer Service and give them the MAC address of the new VTech, and tell them you want your account transferred over to it," he writes.

"Then, once that transfer is complete, the VTech should work fine."

Switching Your Old Phone Number to Vonage? Check Out Our Local Number Portability Forum

Over the years (three years plus and counting, actually) I've noticed many threads with questions about Local Number Portability- that is, moving your old phone number over to your new Vonage account. That's not surprising, considering that many Vonage Forum Members have just signed up for Vonage service or who are about ready to- want to make sure that they will be able to keep the same phone number friends, family and others are used to calling them at.

For questions related to this process, we have a Local Number Portability Forum section here on the Vonage Forum. You can go right to the LNP (for Local Number Portability) Forum by clicking here.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
