Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - April 25, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 25, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on a Vonage Canada promotion that if you sign up for Vonage service, you'll get 20 free music downloads. We'll also catch up with that big Belize Vonage-blocking hearing that will take place tomorrow. We'll also look at  two Vonage Voip Forum threads with different router-related issues and questions.

In The News

Subscribe To Vonage, Get 20 Free Music Downloads

Through the end of this month, Vonage Canada will be teaming up with Universal Music Canada to offer consumers free music downloads from Universal Music’s Website when they subscribe to Vonage Voip service.

The retail promotion, gives  customers purchasing a Vonage Internet Phone Service Start-up Kit 20 free music downloads from Universal Music. The online promotion will run until about mid-summer, and gives customers who sign-up for Vonage at 20 music downloads as well.

"We are proud to be working with the preeminent name in Canadian music to bring our full-featured, flat-rate Internet phone service to music lovers across Canada," says Patti Jordan, Director of Marketing & Communications, Vonage Canada. “Whether it’s listening to an MP3 player or using Internet phone service, we live in a world where the Internet is making work and play easier. Our relationship with Universal brings us closer to our goal of making Internet phone service top of mind with tech savvy Canadians who want more choice and flexibility when it comes to their phone service."

"Working with Vonage brings together two pioneers of their respective industries,” added Heidi Knobovitch, Vice President, Partnership Marketing & Special Markets, Universal Music Canada. “We have a strong track-record of teaming up with companies to promote their products and services, and feel our arrangement with Vonage is a natural fit that allows us to continue this tradition."

Belize To Hold A Public Forum On Voip Blockage Tomorrow

Tomorrow April 26th, 2006 at the Radisson Fort George Hotel from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, under the theme “Opportunities and Threats for Voip in Belize, the Belize Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will hold a public forum on Voip (Voice over Internet Protocol) to inform the general public and stakeholders and to receive their views on VOIP. Members of the business community, especially in the tourism industry, have been in an uproar since Belize Telecommunications Limited started to interfere with the use of the cheap telephone services such as Vonage and others.

PUC Communications Manager Anne Wade says her office has been flooded with calls, letters and e-mails from people frustrated about the treatment from BTL. “We are expecting a very lively session," she told the San Pedro Sun, a Belize newspaper.

The newspaper said the forum will include presentations on the international perspective and the domestic legal framework. Representatives of government, telephone companies, internet service providers, the business community and consumers will also present. Following the presentations there will be an interactive session between the panel and the audience.

The Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) is one of many groups who are opposed to the prevention of Voip services in Belize. “The Board is appalled by the actions of BTL,” said Andrew Godoy, BTIA Director. “We have heard from many of our constituents and this is negatively impacting their business.”

Tom Vidrine, President of the Ambergris Caye Chamber of Commerce (ACCC) told the Sun he has received over a hundred letters that he plans to hand deliver to the forum. “It (the use of VoIP) is vital to our businesses,” stressed Vidrine. He said he has even heard from potential businesses that may change their plans to invest in Belize if the country allows this practice to continue. “I’ve had so many people say they can’t live here or operate without the ability to affordably make international calls.” Vidrine added he plans to tell the PUC that affordable communications plays a vital role for the growth of Belize. “They are just shooting themselves in the foot,” he stressed.

Wade said the PUC will record the forum and use the information to determine the best course of action. The PUC regulates telecommunications along with electricity and water. Wade added that the PUC will work quickly after the forum to address the issue.

By the way, did you know that we have a very popular Vonage Forum thread on this whole issue? It's called Belize (BTL) Blocking Vonage & Others?. I just linked to it in the last sentence.

And speaking of the Vonage Forum, let's go there now and see what you members have been asking, and talking about.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called RT31P2 eating download speed, Vonage Forum Member ArnB describes the problems he has been having with the RT31P2.

"Doing some speed testing revealed my RT31P2 is eating about 33% of my cable download speed," he writes. "Anyone have any suggestions or should I dump the RT31P2 and if so for what?

ArnB then includes "Typical results using Optimum FTP server, results of which he said came after tests run many times:

*LINKSYS Removed here* 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for test16 (16777216 bytes). 226 Transfer complete. ftp: 16777216 bytes received in 16.35Seconds 1025.88Kbytes/sec.

*Linksys put back in here* 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for test16 (16777216 bytes). 226 Transfer complete. ftp: 16777216 bytes received in 23.86Seconds 703.03Kbytes/sec.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member sjziegler reads ArnB's post and offers a helpful response.

"I put my RT31P2 behind a Trendnet TEW 611 BRP, which I saw mentioned here. Although it has received mixed reviews, overall I have been very happy with it," he writes.

Then sjziegler describes why he did this. "The main reason I got it was for QOS. My outgoing voice quality had gotten to the point where almost everyone we called was complaining. Although I suspect it is a bandwidth problem with Charter (Cable, his broadband services provider), this has greatly improved things," he adds. "Speed seems better, although with Charter it comes and goes with traffic, I suspect."

Because new Vonage Forum Member C_Rock77 wanted to "see" his Vonage connection "rock," so he decided to start a Vonage Voip Forum thread called Need help with 2 Router Setup.

"I have a Netgear WGR614 wireless router (with my main PC, a second PC wireless connection, and A ReplayTV unit wired," he writes.

"Vonage sent me a Linksys RT31P2 router. I now have my setup like this:
Cable modem->Linksys->Netgear->PCs," C_Rock adds.

"ere is my problem:
I do A LOT of torrent downloads. Before I put the Vonage Linksys in the setup, I was getting super fast download speeds. Now I am lucky if I get above 25 kB/s."

Then C_Rock asks two questions:

"How can I get my Netgear wireless router (which has port forwarding set up for torrent downloads) to pass through the Linksys with no restrictions?," and:

"Also, when I test my BT client, I get a NAT error. This never used to happen when I had the setup: Modem --> Router --> Vonage & Computers. I had Choppy audio, so I rewired it to the "recommended" configuration." he tells us.

"Now, I have problems with my BT client," he adds.

Then C_Rock asks if any Vonage Forum Member has insight into what configuration he needs to use on both routers.

"I've enabled Port Forwarding on both," he writes. "On the IP address of the computer that does the most BT....and on all 3 addresses of the Vonage router."

NateHoy is the first to answer.

"Vonage routers do not do well with BitTorrent," he points out.

"Put the Vonage router behind the NetGear, it does not need any ports forwarded, only open ports, and usually that will work as long as you have not specifically forwarded ports 10,000 - 20,000 to any other device on the network," NateHoy adds. "It also needs open ports 69, 80, 123, and sometimes 5060 and 5061. There is NO need to forward anything."

Then NateHoy follows this with a detailed diagram of a Vonage-compatible two-router setup.

Have Vonage-Related Wiring Issues? Check Out Our Hard-Wiring-Installation Forum

Over the years (three years plus and counting, actually) I've noticed many threads with questions about wiring-related issues. Sometimes these are questions from new Vonage Forum Members, other times from experienced Vonage users who are moving into a new home or apartment, and want to ensure that any wiring issues related to the Vonage service are resolved before they move.

And yes, there are those Vonage users who have encountered wiring problems and incompatibilities.

For questions related to wiring, we have a Hard Wiring-Installation Forum section here on the Vonage Forum. You can go right to the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum by clicking here.
