Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 20, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Let's catch up with where a racing team co-sponsored by Vonage is headed to this Sunday. We'll also go review two interesting Vonage Voip Forum threads, one on bandwidth usage and call handling, the other about choppy audio over a Vonage connection.

In The News

Vonage-Sponsored Racing Team Prepping For Big Sunday Event

This weekend, the #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley will be at the Virginia International Raceway to compete Sunday's 'VIR 400'Round 5 of the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.

"To be honest it doesn't take too long to get to know a new circuit," co-driver Alex Figge tells "All you need are a few laps at race pace and you get it down pretty quickly." R

"We were just a support race at Long Beach so we had to be on it right from the off," says teammate Ryan Dalziel of the last race for the Vonage-co sponsored #89. "We're back to our regular format now so we have a bit more time to look at set-up's and so on but we've enjoyed a quick car at each race so far this season, we've just been dogged by bad luck in the races! I can't wait to go racing this weekend and I'm sure that we'll be competitive again in Virginia. The track's quite technical but there are a couple of good, flat-out straights that could make for some fun overtaking opportunities."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Before signing up for Vonage service, Vonage Forum Member nickname has some questions. So as to get some answers, he's opened a thread called Bandwidth Usage, Offline Call Handling Questions.

Nickname's first question:

"I understand Vonage can be configured to consume more or less bandwidth and that this effects quality. What I want to know is if the required bandwidth applies to when calls are taking place only, or if the bandwidth is being consumed at all times by Vonage. If it's not being consumed at all times, what bandwidth is Vonage consuming when calls are not taking place?"

Nickname gets an answer from current Vonage Forum Member of the Week NateHoy

"The Vonage adapter will not take up much bandwidth at all when a call is not actively in progress. It will take up SOME, but at a rate of a few packets a minute, tops, for handshake protocols," NateHoy writes. He adds that he has watched his WRTP54G for several hours using WallWatcher monitoring his router/firewall, and very little comes from the Vonage adapter if you are not on the phone.

Nickname's second question:

"If my broadband (DSL) connection goes down or my phone adapter is offline, how does Vonage handle the inbound call? Does it go to voicemail? Does it forward? Does it simply fail? What is the caller's experience?"

Here, nickname gets an answer from NateHoy, as well as from fellow Vonage Forum Members taylor2767.

"You have a couple of choices here," taylor2767 writes. "If the your ISP is down or if Vonage is down you setup your account to have calls forwarded to a particular number."

"You can put a 'network outage number' that the call will be forwarded to, or you can leave that field blank on your web account and the call will go to voicemail," NateHoy advises. "Your choice."

New Vonage Forum Member Denial is not in denial about his perception that the audio quality on his Vonage line isn't as good as he would like it to be. He describes the problem in a new post he's just started called Choppy Audio.

"I'm getting extremely choppy audio when calls are connected. When ringing, the call is perfectly fine so I don't believe it's the hardware," Denial lets us know "Is there any config for my router to increase call quality or network setup that I should try?," asks Denial, who also posts the results of his test.

Steve48 reads Denial's testyourvoip results and then steps up with an initial assessment.

"You're getting a lot of packet discards on the uplink," he writes. "What bandwidth are you measuring up and down?"

Steve48 then suggests that Denial should try connecting his PC directly to the modem, with no routers involved. and then repeat the Voip test.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you may have just read in our summary of the  Choppy Audio post, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
