Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - April 19, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 19, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on how Vonage is doing with E911, and also meet the new President of Vonage America. We'll also go read thru two interesting Vonage Voip Forum threads, both about router-related issues.

In The News

Vonage E911 Now Nearly Up To 80 Percent of Subscriber Lines

Vonage has announced that nearly 80 percent of its U.S. subscriber lines now have Enhanced 911 (E911) service -- a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number -- and that it is continuing to quickly equip new counties across the nation with E911 everyday.

For the past six months, Vonage has been turning up on average over 112 calling centers in more than 45 new counties each week. Over the past two weeks, Vonage equipped an additional 260 calling centers in over 45 new counties with E911 -- bringing the total number of calling centers across the nation with emergency service to over 4300.

On the Vonage Forum, we have posted a link to an article with a list of new counties and additional calling centers equipped for Vonage E911. Here's the link

Vonage America Names President

Vonage has just announced that Michael Tribolet, a its interim president of Vonage America Inc. since January, 2006, has been named to the post permanently.

Tribolet's role is to oversee marketing, sales, customer care and a variety of operations functions.

"Michael has more than 15 years experience in multi-national operations management and I am excited that he will be assuming the permanent role as President of Vonage America," said Vonage CEO Mike Snyder.

Before his appointment as interim president of Vonage America, Tribolet served as Executive Vice President for Vonage Holdings. Before that, Tribolet served as Vice President of Operations in Dialpad Communications where he oversaw the engineering, operations, IT and telecommunications divisions in American, Korean and Japanese operations. Prior to Dialpad, Mike spent nearly ten years at Data Products International where they created CyberVault and oversaw the build-out of several Internet telephony services.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member rozeltf has started a new thread that he's named Setting up RTP300 off existing router.

"I have Verizon FiOS, so there is no modem involved," rozeltf writes, adding that his setup is :
FiOS => Dlink DI-624 (supplied by Verizon) => RTP 300.

"I also have plugged in a PC to the RTP 300. Everything seems to work fine except I now experience dropped connections while FTP'ing to my web server from one of the computers wired to the DI-624 (lose connection to the server timed out ,not Internet.)," he points out.

Next, rozeltf notes that he noticed the RTP 300 manual specifically states to not connect a computer to it if the router is connected to another router. "So I disconnected the PC and tested but still experience the FTP timing out," he says.

"Do you possibly have the Mac address cloning on the TRP300 back to the PC you are FTPing on?," fellow Vonage Forum Member Box posts.  "I had a similar issue, and NateHoy fixed my up. Easy fix if that is it."

And wouldn't you know it. Not even 15 minutes after Box recommends NateHoy's solution, here comes NateHoy with a post  with some advice for Box.

"If you already have a working router," NateHoy writes, "you probably want to just make the RTP300 a "vonage-only device", like this:"

Below that, NateHoy- our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week- actually includes a diagram of a setup he'd like Box to try.

On a new Vonage Forum thread with the title Best equipment =better quality voice- phone adapter vs. alln1, Vonage Forum Member shaggy411 goes into detail with his question.

Actually two questions, that is.

"Which equipment would make for better quality when using Vonage overseas," shaggy411 writes, Motorola VT2442 and the Linksys PAP2.

"I use the RTP300 myself, but the PAP2 has a good reputation," answers Steve48. "The VT2442 is newer, but probably fine as well, and does have routing capability.

Then shaggy411 asks which setup "makes for greater quality. An all in one phone adapter and router like the Motorola or a separate phone adapter and separate router?"

"For the sort of use that most of us make of our computers, you're likely to get equal performance with either," Steve48 replies. "If you do a lot of heavy data transfers and need peak performance from the router, a separate high quality unit is best.

"The problem with the combination units is not in the quality of the phone circuits, but in the fact that they are limited as routers," Steve48 adds.

Have Vonage-Related Wiring Issues? Check Out Our Hard-Wiring-Installation Forum

Over the years (three years plus and counting, actually) I've noticed many threads with questions about wiring-related issues. Sometimes these are questions from new Vonage Forum Members, other times from experienced Vonage users who are moving into a new home or apartment, and want to ensure that any wiring issues related to the Vonage service are resolved before they move.

And yes, there are those Vonage users who have encountered wiring problems and incompatibilities.

For questions related to wiring, we have a Hard Wiring-Installation Forum section here on the Vonage Forum. You can go right to the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum by clicking here.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
