Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 18, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we will catch up on a special Vonage offer available to many Canadians 50 years or older. We'll also go read thru a Vonage Voip Forum thread about firmware to use with a particular router used with the Vonage service, as well as a thread from a reader who wants the volume raised on his Vonage calls.

In The News

Vonage Looking For Tech Employees

Vonage Canada has teamed up with 400,000 member CARP, Canada’s Association for the Fifty-Plus, to provide a special offer for CARP members who sign up with Vonage Canada for service.

"The telephone remains the best way for seniors to stay in touch with family and friends, whether they travel south for the winter, go to the cottage for the summer, or have grandchildren or family scattered across North America," says Vonage Canada director of channel sales Gary McLean. "CARP members can take advantage of Vonage’s inexpensive services, including unlimited long distance calling that lets them talk longer but pay less."

Both Vonage and CARP say the biggest feature that will appeal to CARP members is the portability of Vonage’s service. Users can simply bring their adapter to any location, connect it into a high-speed Internet connection, and start making calls.

"We are excited to offer our 400,000 members the opportunity to reduce their phone bills and take advantage of the innovative features offered by Vonage’s phone service,” adds CARP's vice president of marketing Eric Vengroff. "Maintaining close personal relationships can be especially difficult for people over 50 as family and friends often move away to pursue school or professional careers. Vonage helps shrink that distance and helps maintain those relationships by making long distance phone calling more economical for CARP members to keep in touch more often."

How well some of us know this..

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Well, Vonage Forum Member ytsejam wasn't really "in a jam" about a firmware issue, but he was curious enough to start a thread about it. He's named this thread Recommended Linksys WRT model firmware.

"I decided to purchase the (Linksys) WRT54GL, so I can try in minimize any issues I have with my internet connection, mainly for VoIP," he writes. "What is your recommended third-party Linksys firmware and settings to go along with it?"

He then adds that he is personally looking for stability and implemented VOIP-related tweaks, rather than for any other usage.

NateHoy sails right up with some advice for ytsejam.

"My personal experience says HyperWRT Thibor," writes NateHoy, then adding links to a few articles he has posted on the subject at, as well as the Hyper WRT Thibor site at

"However, others will recommend DD-WRT, and from what I understand it will do exceptionally well also," adds Nate, who is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Then NateHoy provides his perspective on both:

"HyperWRT: Closest to the look and feel of stock firmware, reintegrated with stock firmware every time Linksys releases updates (in other words, they (leverage) Linksys' work while adding a large number of new features, bug fixes, etc). Works much like stock firmware, with a few significant new menu options and new features on existing screens," he writes.

DD-WRT: "Larger changes from stock firmware, insane number of features, very powerful and flexible. More complex to operate," he adds.

Nate then adds that there are a number of others but those are the big two.

Then ytsejam follows up with a post in which he thanks Nate for his assistance and gives him a pat on the back as well.

"Thanks Nate, you seem to be the go to man here," ytsejam writes. "I appreciate your input and I did have that firmware first on my list. I do appreciate the infinite amount of settings that some have setup, but for my use, I am looking for minimal options, but is fine tuned under the hood, which is sounding like the HyperWRT Thibor version."

New Vonage Forum Member Mattb2003 wishes that some of his Vonage calls could be louder, so he decided to start a Vonage Forum thread about the subject. The thread is titled Adjusting Talk Volume...

"Does anyone know how to adjust the talk volume through the router? When I have my fax machine connected and the phone rings, it listens to the line in case it's an incoming fax (can't turn it off). I guess my volume goes down when this happens," he explains. "I can unplug it the fax machine, and that fixes it, but I'd like to keep it connected in case a fax does come through."

Mattb2003 adds that although he is not sure if this is possible, he'd appreciate some input.

Once again, NateHoy is first with a reply.

"Vonage customer service should be able to adjust this for you," he writes. "Unfortunately, you do not have access to do this yourself."

Switching Your Old Phone Number to Vonage? Check Out Our Local Number Portability Forum

Over the years (three years plus and counting, actually) I've noticed many threads with questions about Local Number Portability- that is, moving your old phone number over to your new Vonage account. That's not surprising, considering that many Vonage Forum Members have just signed up for Vonage service or who are about ready to- want to make sure that they will be able to keep the same phone number friends, family and others are used to calling them at.

For questions related to this process, we have a Local Number Portability Forum section here on the Vonage Forum. You can go right to the LNP (for Local Number Portability) Forum by clicking here.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
