Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 17, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll hear about what sounds like an effort by Vonage to hire techies for their headquarters office in New Jersey.  We'll also go over a Vonage Voip Forum thread about a specific DSL provider and how well they do with Vonage service, as well as a thread started by a reader looking for a specific type of router to use with his Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage Looking For Tech Employees

I was reading on Russell Shaw's blog that it seems as though Vonage is staffing up its Holmdel, N.J. headquarters with small office-home office and home office network tech support troubleshooter types.

Russ says he knows this because he got a note from Mark Nichlos of Options Employment Resources in Tinton Falls, N.J. Russ says that Mark mentioned that he is a technical recruiter who has been hired by Vonage to find "people-friendly" prospects with Windows/Mac and/or Unix skills.

Now I should point out-that the Vonage Forum is exclusively owned & operated by 4Sight Media LLC & is no way endorsed, sponsored, provided, owned or otherwise controlled by Vonage. Still, we are interested in what Vonage is doing, so that's why I decided to quote from Russ' piece. I suppose that those of you who live near Vonage headquarters and have both the expertise and the availability to apply for such positions might want to "Google" the company Mark works for and then contact them.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Qwest DSL OK?, new Vonage Forum Member andromeda poses an interesting question.

"I am thinking about switching to Qwest DSL (it's a long story but unfortunately where I live they are about the only other option)," he writes. "But, I heard a 'rumor' that it doesn't work that well with Vonage. Is this true? Do any of you use Qwest DSL?"

Two fellow Vonage Forum Members initially have responded to andromeda's question.

"I don't have a direct answer for whether Qwest DSL would work well with Vonage (but I have to wonder why it wouldn't), but one other consideration when getting DSL is that many DSL providers require you to have a landline with them," blakadher writes. "If cost is no consideration then that's not a big deal, but most people are using Vonage because of the cost savings over a Ma Bell POTS line."

Next up is Kash76

"I have Qwest DSL using a local ISP here in Minneapolis. Vonage works great for me," he writes. "I have the 1.5/896 package. Vonage performance does suffer if I am pushing my bandwidth hard though.

"I imagine this would be no different than anyone else," he adds.

New Vonage Forum Member ecourt was looking for some QoS router suggestions, so he decided to open a thread about the subject. He's named this thread new QOS router suggestions.

"I'm looking for a good G wireless router, with QOS," writes ecourt, who adds that he is about to add a Vonage line to his existing setup.

"I don't like the way Linksys QOS works, so I'd like to hear what other wireless routers you guys are using that support QOS, and work," writes ecourt, who adds that he also needs the ability to run VPN.

Several answers are offered to ecourt's post, including one from Vonage Forum Member MRN

"I have a Trendnet TEW-611 BRP," writes MRN, who adds that  it has the same QOS as the Hawking broadband booster. "This router does not need any third party firmware," he points out.

Well, it is Monday, time to meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. NateHoy has had another banner week, so he gets our award this week. To browse NateHoy's most recent posts, click here.
