Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 13, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll hear about a company that works with Vonage when customers want to switch their old phone numbers over to Vonage, and what has been going on with this company lately. We'll also go over Vonage Forum threads from a Member who has reservations about using Vonage for his business lines, and whether or not it is possible to use a separate Vonage device as an extension phone to your existing Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage's Verification Provider Continues Their Growth

Ever heard of a company called Third Party Verification Inc.?

No, I didn't think so. But maybe you have dealt with them.

This company specializes in what is called third-party verification services, and also offers call-recording services for Voip services such as Vonage. This company is the first to employ speech-enabled verification, an integrated call-back solution, and an eLOA (electronic letter of agency), solution.

Third Party Verification are news because they picked up another client yesterday (not Vonage, with whom they have been working with since back in March, 2005.

The partnership with 3PV enables Vonage customers to quickly and easily complete the paperwork necessary to port their number from their existing carrier to Vonage. 3PV offers Voip providers a range of solutions that solve the unique challenges they face when it comes to providing the protection of third party verification to their customer

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Geez has been thinking of switching to Vonage service for his home business lines. He expresses his concerns in a thread he's opened and named, Scared to switch business line to Vonage.

"I'm thinking about switching my 3 business telephone and business fax lines (my business is in my home) over to Vonage to take advantage of the great price savings, but I'm scared to death that it will not give me good call quality or, worse, won't even work at all," he writes. "It's one thing to tinker with my home phone service (currently on Vonage, but of relatively poor quality), but if I have problems with my business line it could be extremely detrimental to my business."

Only about 10 minutes (OK, 11 minutes to be exact) after Geez makes this post, fellow Vonage Forum Member NateHoy posts a reply.

"Let me see if I understand," NateHoy writes. "1. You run your business out of your home. 2. You have a Vonage line using your home connection (presumably the same one you use for your business), and it can support one Vonage line, and that poorly. 3. You want to know if it is a good idea to add more Voip lines (and hence more bandwidth consumption) to a connection that cannot do well with just one.

"Do I have the question correct?," he asks. "Is there another factor I'm missing, like another, better, connection in the equation somewhere? If I have summarized your question, I think it rather answers itself, don't you?

"Seriously, I'd focus on getting the one line working properly," he advises Geez to do. NateHoy then suggests that Geez read the sticky ("What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage....") "and post the stuff there, and maybe we can get your existing line working right.

"Then we can talk about whether it can handle 3-4 MORE lines," he adds.

Geez, Geez follows up with a note of thanks.

"Thanks for the reply...funny how another perspective can make one see the obvious," Geez writes.

"Actually, I did incorrectly describe my situation; I currently run my business out of a small office suite using BellSouth phone lines, but I am planning on downsizing and moving my business to my home," Geez then points out. Your point is still valid though...why would I think that 3 lines would work out of my home when 1 doesn't even work well???"

Geez adds that he thinks he'll take NateHoy's advice and work on the home Vonage connection before I switches his business lines over.

NateHoy comes back with a reply.

"When you're ready to tackle the home line and get it up and humming (assuming we can, no guarantees), we'll be here for ya," NateHoy writes. "Just read the 'what to  sticky thread at the top, and post your details, and maybe we can get it working. Then, we can have a serious chat about how many lines are realistic."

Vonage Forum Member oink was curious about whether he could use a Vonage WiFi phone as an extension of his adapter-based Vonage service. So oink has decided to open a thread that he calls, multiple devices with the same phone number.

"Can I have a phone adapter and a wifi phone and it will have the same phone number," oink asks in a thread-opening post.

Oink then gets an answer from mharvey, who happens to be our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Vonage currently does not allow you to have multiple Voip devices (phone adapters, Voip phones, WiFi phones) with the same phone number," mharvey points out. "Each device must be assigned a unique phone number. Each phone number will have its own pool of outgoing minutes."

But then mharvey says that it would be nice if Vonage allowed other VOIP devices to be installed as extensions to your single number... but they do not allow it at this time.

Have An Idea for Vonage? Submit It To Our Voip Feature Wish List!

Reading the gist of what mharvey just wrote gave me the idea to point out a section of the Vonage Forum called VoIP Feature Wish List. Here is where you can make suggestions for features that you would like Vonage to add to their services.

I have just checked this area, and here are the four threads that: a) have more than 1,000 page views, and b) have received at least one new post in the last couple of months.

These threads (and links to them are) Caller ID name, I want anonymous call blocking, Anonymous call rejection, Caller ID Blocking? (a separate thread from the "I want anonymous call blocking"), and Caller ID Blocking?.

Although the Vonage Forums are completely independent of Vonage the company, is no way endorsed, sponsored, provided, owned or otherwise controlled by Vonage, I do know for a fact that Vonage folks read the Forums. Who knows- maybe they will add your idea!

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
