Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - April 12, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 12, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll see where Vonage ranks in terms of VoIP providers that are familiar to U.S. consumers.  We'll also go over a Vonage Voip Forum thread on a Vonage VTech phone whose light seems to stay on all the time, and another thread about a two-line, two-router configuration that seems to be slowing down the thread author's Internet connection speeds.

Survey Shows Vonage Is The Most Familiar Voip Provider

Over the last nine months, the number of adults in the United States familiar with Voip grew to  51 percent from 36 percent in the United States, according to a survey of about 2,000 adults by Harris Interactive.

A substantial number of adults, however, were unaware of the technology.  Women were far less likely than men to know about VoIP,34 percent versus 62 percent in the US.

Among VoIP-aware adults, Vonage had the most recognition in the United States.

"Overall, the market is much more open to Voip than it was at the beginning of 2005. For now, it is still a service used by a niche audience, mainly male. To tempt a broader range of consumers to try the service, players in the market need to generate greater awareness of the service, explaining what it does and how it works, clearly communicating the key benefits delivered by the service, and find ways to lower the perceived barriers to usage," says Derek Eccleston, research director at Harris Interactive. "The most successful companies going forward will be those which deliver the right messages and the right mix of benefits to targeted segments of consumers with the most potential for take-up. Watch out for the winners and losers over the coming months," added Eccleston.

My take on this: needing to "deliver the right messages" is a key reason why Vonage is not only the leading advertiser on the Internet, but is a major advertiser on television as well.

And speaking of Vonage's television ads, did you know we have them available for view linked directly from the Vonage Forum? To see a list of the ads we have posted, go to our  Vonage TV Commercials section. Go through the list, select a clip of an ad you would like to watch, click on it- and it will play right in the media player you have installed on your computer!

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member MissBrown has had a problem with the light on her new VTech phone she has been using with her Vonage service. So MissBrown decided to start a thread and name it steady yellow light with VTech IP 8100-2.

Noting that she has the VTech IP 8100-2 with two handsets, she writes, "I cannot get my Vonage device to work. Once I get everything connected, I get only a steady yellow light on the Vonage device. I never get a green light. I never get a dial tone."

Then hookbill notices MissBrown's post and replies to hers....

"I have the same phone you have and on one occasion I got a steady yellow light. After calling my cable company because my Internet was not working as well they had me reboot my router," he writes. "That fixed it.

"Your problem doesn't sound the same but you might want to give that a try," he adds.

Hookbill adds that it would probably be helpful for MissBrown to post more details about her setup, and to consult "the sticky" post for instructions on what info to provide. The sticky post is What To Post When You Are Having Technical Problems With Vonage.

I've noticed that on the Hard Wiring section of the Vonage Forum, new Vonage Forum Member has2bezier a new Vonage Forum thread in entitled new user 2 line/2 router questions. It's of wide enough interest that I think a lot of you will be interested.

"New user- 2 accounts. I have 1 account-my wife the second. Consequently Vonage provided 2 routers," he writes. "I opted for the WRTP54G for my account and the (standard). RT31P2 for the wife's"

Next, has2bezier describes his network configuration as follows:

cable modem-----WRTP54G
|-----my line |------wife's line

"My question is - are there any settings I should be using on either router (static ip addresses ,QoS , PPPoE ) etc because I do not really fully understand any of it yet. The above setup seems to work as I can call out on either phone and receive calls-however my internet speed has totally gone away - it is slower than dialup it seems," he writes.

"Also, on either phone I can hear a dial tone however when making an outgoing call I cannot hear the line dialed ringing," adds has2bezier. "Only static until the other number is reached and is answered. SO it seems the default settings on the routers works ok-except my internet speed is really bad - and the outgoing ringer is not working- I am hoping there is some easy workarounds to try for these issues?"

As he does so often and so ably, Steve48 jumps in with a post.

"Are you running any intensive data transfer programs?," he asks has2bezier. "Have you tried temporarily connecting just the RT31P2 to the modem? If you do that, does that line work properly?"

Steve48 also suggests that has2bezier run a test, and post the results.

So taking a cue from Steve48's and hookbill's suggestion on the two Vonage Forum posts we have highlighted here today, here are more details on:

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, !!
