Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 11, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on some big announcements from Vonage- about their IPO, E-911 service, and their shopping mall retail plans. We'll also go over Vonage Voip Forum threads about poor sound quality and a router that may have been the cause of it - and what to do when Vonage keeps sending voice mail notification emails to an old email address.

In The News

Vonage Gets Help With IPO

Vonage Holdings Corp. added three investment banks to its initial public offering on Monday. In an amended filing, with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Vonage said  company said Bear Stearns, Piper Jaffray and Thomase Weisel will serve on the banking team for its IPO. Citigroup, Deutsche Bank Securities and UBS Investment Bank remain the three main underwriters of the IPO.

Vonage E-911 To Be Nearly Universal

In a statement released yesterday, Vonage also said it's making progress to provide E-911 capabilities to nearly all of its remaining subscriber lines within the year.

Vonage To Open A Mall Kiosk In Buffalo

Yesterday, Vonage announced they have launched a trial sales run of its devices at a kiosk in the Walden Galleria, Buffalo, N.Y. The kiosk, located on the lower level, adjacent to Dick's Sporting Goods and Victoria's Secret will be managed by Voip Supply, LLC, a division of B2 Technologies, LLC, and a leading supplier of Voice over IP hardware, software, and services.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Linksys / Vonage Problems, new Vonage Forum Member JohnTK goes into detail about his particular issue, the problems it was presenting and how he solved the problem.

"My Netgear wireless router that was originally coupled with my Vonage PAP2 died after about 9 months of service," he writes. "I believe it had some overheating issues as part of its design but did give good Vonage connection service though."

JohnTK adds that he bought a new wireless router (Linksys WRT54GX4) and had much difficulty getting this to work with the Vonage PAP2.

"The problems were that the sound quality was poor - Packets were dropping off making two-way communications impossible," he notes. "Their (Linksys) tech support worked on this and finally saying it was a Vonage problem. Vonage Tech Support changed Bandwidth, Codec and other settings without success - frustrating to say the least."

"The fix to this is to download and install the latest firmware from Linksys for this Wireless router," he informs us. "Firmware 1.00.15 just came out this past week and has solved my issues with Vonage packets. It is working like a charm!"

Vonage Forum Member pgnesmith has been having an interesting, but frustrating problem. Seems that he has not been able to update the email address Vonage has on file for him in order to send him alerts that he has Vonage voice mails waiting. Because of this predicament, pgnesmith decided to start a thread and name it, I can't update my email address.

"I have been trying to update my email address for a couple months and tried everything. I called tech support and after repeated attempts they say that my ISP is blocking my email from Vonage or my email is down," pgnesmith writes.

He adds that he can receive emails from everyone and can get confirmation emails from Vonage to his new account, only his notifications for my voicemail go to my old address.

After a helpful post from Vonage Forum Member of the Week mharvey, pgnesmith decided to research the issue further. He's just made a follow-up post in which he describes how he's solved the issue.

"OK, Here is what is happening. There is a second place to change email settings for voicemail notifications," he writes.

"Log in to your account. At the top of the page select 'Features.'

Next, pgnesmith writes:

"You will see a box on the left side of the page that allows you to configure your Voicemail settings. Select the phone number from the drop down box that you wish to edit information for. And select configure.

After you do this, pgnesmith notes that at the top of the page you will see "Voicemail Email Notification". "Select this link and you will be taken to a page that allows you to update your email notification settings."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, !!
