Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll see where Vonage ranks in VoIP services in North America and the U.K., and how a race car co-sponsored by Vonage did this weekend.  We'll also go over Vonage Voip Forum threads about router configurations, and about call volume that is too loud. And this being Monday, we'll meet our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Report Shows Vonage As Leading Voip Provider In North America

A new eMarketer report sees the number of households using Voip to climb to 32.6 million by 2010 –up from 5.2 million this year. The report attributes the growth to Voip pricing their plans cheaper than traditional phone lines. 

"With most Voip offers ranging from $15 to $30 per month for unlimited local and long distance calls across the U.S. and Canada, price will be the primary driver for the Voip industry in the short term," the report says. "Those that survive the fierce price competition are likely to be companies able to offer advanced voice features and other service bundles."

The report continues saying that Voip pure-play Vonage has secured the most subscribers as of the end of 2005, with 1.25 million. Vonage is the single largest online advertiser, serving 16.6 million impressions last month, Vonage’s campaigns dwarfed competitors.

Vonage Is The Largest Non-IM Voip Provider In The U.K.

A recent survey estimates that in the past year nearly two million British adults have used their computers to make phone calls. With another 1.9 million non-users likely to adopt the technology within a year, Voip is set to grow.

Of the full-fledged Voip providers (not predominantly softphone companies or instant messaging services) Vonage had the biggest share, 6%. 

According to the survey, 56 per cent of those with Voip expect to increase their usage, noted James Myring, associate director of Continental Research. "VoIP usage is admittedly growing from a relatively small base. But as utility bills increase, people will be looking at how they can cut down on their monthly outgoings."

Vonage Co-Sponsored Race Car Has Disappointing Performance

That Vonage co-sponsored racecar did not do all that well in this weekend's Crown Royal Grand American Challenge of Long Beach. The Ryan Dalziel car finished in 16th place- a result largely because the front-running vehicle brushed the Vonage car.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Which VoIP router configuration works best?, Vonage Forum Member joe33067 describes his predicament.

"Briefly, for unexplained reasons, my voice system will go into call forwarding mode, as if there were a network problem at Vonage. I don't know if it's their system, or mine, though," he writes. "I originally was using their Linksys WRT54G router in conjunction with my Motorola WR850G (my Motorola was connected first to the WAN connection).

Joe adds that after doing some reading and research, he decided to go with the Linksys PAP2 (dedicated to Voice, no data communications). "It does not have a WAN connection, so it hangs off of my WR850G," he lets us know. "Obviously, voice prioritization will not happen this way.

"I've got a Motorola VT1000v5 dedicated Voip adapter standing by. It has a WAN connection, so I could make it the first device connected to my broadband, and then have it connect to my WR850G. Is this configuration more reliable for not dropping calls and for reducing the unexplained network outages?," he adds.

Joe notes that these outages are occurring primarily during the day, when no one is home and consequently using the network for data access.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Steve48 replies with some helpful suggestions.

"The problem you're having is rather strange, and I would try to get more information on it before making a decision," he writes. "I'd disable the network outage number in your account home page and see if the problem keeps occurring. If it does, a call to customer support is in order. If the problem stops, you may actually be having network down time at home, causing the automatic forwarding to cut in as it should.

"As far as hooking the VT1005 in ahead of your router, that might help depending on the quality of your router," Steve48 adds. "If it's a good one, then I doubt that it's causing the problem. Likewise, if you are a heavy internet user with a lot of big data transfers, having the VT1005 in front of your router might cause problems if it has trouble handling the load. 

"If, on the other hand, your router is flaky," Steve48 counsels Joe, "putting the VT1005 up front could help."

Joe posts back, noting that he appreciates Steve48's suggestions and will keep them in mind as he further researches the issue.

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Motorola VT2442 Ear splittingly loud inbound, new Vonage Forum Member scottvon describes what's on his mind- and in his ears, for that matter.

"Just received the VT2442 last week. At first was running it downstream of a Netgear Router. Incoming our outgoing calls ...the earpiece volume is deafening even at the lowest setting," he writes. 

Scottvon then says that he moved the router that it's the main router off the cable modem...same problem. He writes that when he called Vonage, he mentioned turning down the volume internally on the VT2442. Ten minutes later the guy is back saying it is done. 

"It seemed better for a few days. It's now back to the point I have to hold the receiver way away from my head to avoid ear drum damage," he points out. "Changing phones has not helped."

Then scottvon provides some information: he's using Vonage over Adelphia Cable, with an upload 4425kbps, download 433kbps through Speakeasy. "The connection is rock solid and always consistent - it is not the problem."

Vonage Forum Member reebok joins the thread with an idea for scottvon.

"The setting is controllable only by Vonage as you can see," he writes. "They (Vonage) don't allow access to the inner workings to end users." 

Reebok thinks that something evidently happened to reset scottvon's settings. "You can call them again and hope it doesn't recur too soon," he advises.
