Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 5, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll see what a new Voip reviews website says about Vonage service, and we'll also catch up with a new bill that will be introduced in Congress today that would seek to halt preferential treatment by large telcos toward selected service providers. The bill, incidentally, was inspired by a case last year in which a small Internet Service Provider blocked Vonage calls. We'll also go through Vonage Voip Forum threads about porting and routing issues.

In The News

Vonage Blocking Case Gives Rise To "Whitacre Amendment"

Rep. Rick Boucher of Virginia told the Freedom2Connect conference yesterday he will try to get strong network neutrality language into the Telecommunications Act rewrite going before a House committee tomorrow, and failing that will go after the Whitacre Tiering plan through the House Judiciary Committee.

The "Whitacre Tiering" concept is named after AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre, who has repeatedly said his company and other broadband carriers should have the right to charge extra for high bandwidth-use websites and services (such as Vonage) that are carried on AT&T's network.

Boucher called the AT&T plan "an effort on the part of the telephone companies to extend their market power from transport into content. Under antitrust principles this is suspicious."

ZDNet reports that Boucher will offer an amendment today that will give the FCC authority to set net neutrality rules.

"What the bill before us gives the FCC is statutory authority to have a complaint process. The FCC could issue orders. That’s a step forward. There is no authority for a rulemaking, however, so the commission could not elaborate on these principles."

Boucher said during the conference he's decided to do this by the Madison River case where a small phone company tried to cut access to Vonage for its ISP customers. Then Federal Communications Chair Michael Powell convinced the company to sign a consent order stopping the practice, but did not have the legal authority to force Madison River to do so at the time.

As to Whitacre Tiering, Boucher said that he will offer an amendment that says 'if a telephone company or broadband provider decides to prioritize any content, then they have to offer that same treatment to all content providers without charge. If you create a fast lane everyone must have access to it."

Voip Reviews Site Says Vonage Has Better Voice Quality Than Telcos

A new website called compare-VoIP rates Vonage highly.

"Vonage holds the greatest share in the Voip market and is definitely the most well known Voip service provider. The voice quality is often reported to be similar, if not better than traditional phone lines," their review says. "The calling plans offered by Vonage offers competitive rates that suits the middle class and the customer service is also reported to be good.

"Unlike many other Voip providers," compare-VoIP adds, "Vonage provides both online and phone support and also offers 911-call routing."

There's one other place where Vonage users turn to online support. I'll give you one hint. This resource is not affiliated with Vonage.

OK, one more hint. You're already there- the Vonage Forum.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called How do I connect 2nd phone instrument to 2 phone port, new Vonage Forum Member dviswa describes what he would like to do.

"Just had my number transferred. I have Linksys RT31P2. I have signed up for one number. I want to connect another instrument to the second port and put it in the study," he writes.

Asking if this is possible, dviswa adds that he does not want to sign up for a second number/line, just connect 2 instruments.

An answer comes from Steve48, who is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"No, this won't work," advises Steve48.  "However, you can put a simple splitter on the port that is working and plug a second phone in that way."

On a new post named Set up Home Run Wiring and Vonage, new Vonage Forum Member Moneyb is on the money with four questions.

"Currently All jacks are "home run wired" to central location. At location I have Cable Modem and Wireless adapter," he writes.

Let's look at the questions from Moneyb, and the answers from fellow Vonage Forum Member mharvey:

Q. Can I simply "remove" telco Line from Punch down block- which feeds all jacks and plug in Voip adapter @ any available jack to power whole house?

A. Yes.

Q. Can I connect Voip Directly to punch down block?

A. Yes.

Q. Should I buy Voip Router or Replace Wireless Router with Voip Router?

A. That is up you I bought a PAP2 because I like the wireless router that I have and I want to be able to remove the PAP2 or the router from the equation when/if I have problems.

Q. Since I Have DirecTV,  fax, and regular TiVo, anyway to test to see if Vonage will work for me before making the switch?

A. There is no way to be sure without getting a Vonage line and trying it out. Many people have made this work. Others have not. It may depend on the quality of your internet connection. There is a lot of useful info in the sticky post at the top of this forum:

That sticky post, incidentally, is called "Home Wiring And Installation Resources."

Here's a Handy Guide to The Vonage Forum

I have written and posted an easy guide to all the sections of the Vonage Forum site. The article describes most of our key sections and features, and has links to them.

This article will be helpful for Vonage Forum visitors who like what they see and are thinking of registering on the Forum (registration is free, of course). If you've been with us awhile, you may find descriptions of some sections of the Forum you may not have ever known about, or haven't visited in awhile.

In addition, maybe you want to recommend us to a friend or colleague, and as part of that recommendation you want to tell them what's on the Forum. If that's the case, you can always forward them the link to the article. Here's the link.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
