Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - April 4, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

April 4, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll see that Voip line popularity is catching up to that of land lines, and we'll see what a magazine for hip guys in their 20s thinks of that new Vonage Wi-Fi phone. We'll also go through Vonage Voip Forum threads about installing Vonage in two different scenarios: in a wireless setup and then at an Internet cafe.

In The News

Voip Lines Gaining On Land Lines

Some 32 million Internet phone lines will be in use in the U.S. by 2009, while traditional residential land lines will fall from about 114 million last year to about 88 million in 2009, according to Gartner Research.  Currently, Vonage is the leading Voip provider in the U.S., with nearly 1.4 million lines connected.

Cargo Magazine, a publication for hip guys in their 20s who are technology aware and sometimes even trend setters, really likes the Panasonic cordless broadband phone for Vonage

"Vonage already boasts the most diverse product portfolio among Voip services, including several Wi-Fi and cordless phones," they write. But this new one from Panasonic is our favorite--the sleek base station is one of the few that doesn't require the usual ugly Voip adaptor box (it plugs directly into your cable or DSL modem).

"The phone's 5.8 GHz communication band is virtually immune to interference from home Wi-Fi networks," the reviewer correctly points out.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread entitled Installing Vonage in a wireless setup, new Vonage Forum Member uniquebobc posts his testyourvoip results and then states his problem.

"My ISP techies (unavailable today) told me to connect the Linksys to the dish cable first, but after I do that, I get no wireless network to my computers AND I still have no phone service!," he writes. "I get no dial tone on my phone. I do get a voice telling me to try the other phone port. This does not remedy the situation. I have checked all connections multiple times. "

Well, uniquebobc's "ISP techies" might have taken the day off, but as we all (and I) know well, the Vonage Forum never takes a day off. Steve48, who is our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week, is a good example of the fact that expert help is just a post away.

"I assume that you've connected the WAN port on the RTP300 to a LAN port on the MR812. Is that correct? If you haven't tried cycling power on the RTP300 you should do that, though I'm sure that technical support told you that," Steve48 writes.

Is the MR812 set up as a DHCP server? If not, you'll need to set up a static address on the RTP300," Steve48 advises. "To access its page, you have to plug a computer into one of its LAN ports. Having done that, you can then set it up for remote administration and access it from the computers that connect to the wireless router. I wouldn't bother unless you plan to play with the RTP300 settings frequently.

"Let me emphasize again that you need to have your computer plugged directly into a LAN port on the RTP300 to see its administration page (at least until you get things set up)," he points out.

"I gather that your computer is accessing the internet successfully via a wireless connection through your router," Steve48 mentions. "Will it also work via a wired connection to a LAN port on your router?"

"I was able to use my neighbor's cell phone and talk through my connection issues with Vonage support. You were right--I had to lug my desktop computer to near the router so that I could connect via hardwire to see the RTP300 admin page," uniquebobc replies.

"All is well that ends well. The NETGEAR MR814v2 is set up as a DHCP server. To set the static address on the RTP300, Vonage support had to try 3 times, but was ultimately successful at helping me to do so. This was the key to making everything work correctly. The RTP300 is first in line from my wireless dish antenna with an Ethernet cable from one of its yellow Ethernet ports to the WAN port of my wireless router.

"Now I have Vonage phone service and my wireless LAN--everything is cool."

You know, reading threads like that makes me real happy.

Occasionally, we get posts here from travelers who would like to use their Vonage equipment when they are on the road. This new thread, entitled using Vonage box at internet cafe, is from a Vonage Forum Member named drjvolpe, who would like to use Vonage in Brazil.

"Is it possible to use the Vonage Motorola VT1000 at an internet cafe that uses DSL in Brazil? The owner won't let me connect it to the DSL box which is the only way the user's manual says you can do it. He only wants me to connect it up AFTER his router which services the multiple computers he has," drjvolpe writes.

"When I do that it stops at 4 blinks. Vonage won't help me because it is outside the US and Canada," he adds. "I have DSL where I am staying but it is so slow it doesn't support use of the box, the voice quality is so bad it sounds like I am underwater to the people I tried to call, although I heard them just fine."

A Vonage Forum Member with the user name sinceMay2004 then posts some advice.

"If he's willing, he needs to setup port forwarding on his router to the IP his router assigned the V device," sinceMay2004 writes.  He then adds the instructions:

Name: Ports: Protocol: Purpose:
DNS: Port 53 - 53 UDP (for DNS)
TFTP: Port 69 - 69 UDP (for profile upgrades/downgrades)
HTTP: Port 80 - 80 UDP (for firmware upgrades/downgrades)
NTP: Port 123 - 123 UDP (Network Time Protocol)
SIP: Port 5060 - 5061 UDP (Call Initialization)
RTP: Ports 10000-20000 UDP (Voice Traffic

"Hopefully this works," sinceMay2004 adds.

Here's a Handy Guide to The Vonage Forum

I have written and posted an easy guide to all the sections of the Vonage Forum site. The article describes most of our key sections and features, and has links to them.

This article will be helpful for Vonage Forum visitors who like what they see and are thinking of registering on the Forum (registration is free, of course). If you've been with us awhile, you may find descriptions of some sections of the Forum you may not have ever known about, or haven't visited in awhile.

In addition, maybe you want to recommend us to a friend or colleague, and as part of that recommendation you want to tell them what's on the Forum. If that's the case, you can always forward them the link to the article. Here's the link.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner.
