Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - March 29, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 29, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I have some GREAT NEWS. At  this morning at 11:55am EST, we signed up our 25,000th Member.

Can't tell you what a great feeling that is.

As you know, we've been having a contest here in which we have asked Vonage Forum Members to guess exactly to the minute, when we would get that 25,000th Member to sign up. The winner gets credit for a month of Vonage service.

Well, it was real tight, but the closest guess was NateHoy's. He projected we would reach 25,000 members at Noon Eastern Time today. Well, he was just a few minutes off, just a bit closer than runner-ups mundy5 and rlstjohn. Honorable mention goes to scerruti for the funniest post in this thread. Thanks everyone for participating! We'll have another contest soon!

But for now, let us get back to business. In the news, we'll see which consumer electronics store will give away free Vonage kits tomorrow- and why they are doing this. We'll look at two Vonage Voip Forums threads-both about different port-related issues.

In The News

Vonage-Sponsored Michael Andretti To Sign Autographs Tomorrow

Michael Andretti, who will drive the Jim Beam/ Vonage car as he makes his return to racing in the Indianapolis 500 on May 28, will be greeting his fans tomorrow at the Circuit City in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Free Vonage devices will be distributed to any fan who signs up for service at the store during his visit. Fans will also       have the chance to receive hero cards autographed by Andretti and win free race tickets. Local radio station Star Power 98 Rock will broadcast live from the event.
WHERE: Circuit City, 2006 Tyrone Blvd. North, St. Petersburg, FL
WHEN: Thursday, March 30, 2006, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m..

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member jpst wanted to set up QoS (Quality of Service) on his router. But to do this, he needed some info, which is why he started a thread called What are the IP ports Vonage uses?

"I am trying the find the IP ports that Vonage uses for VOIP. Does anyone know this?," he writes. "This is so I can setup QoS on my router."

Then, less than 20 minutes later, jpst comes back with a well-researched answer to his question. That's good he did this- lets others who might know the answer help other Vonage Forum Members with unresolved questions.

"These are the ports that Vonage requires to be OPEN for successful use of the Vonage device (the ability to make and receive calls, download device profiles, firmware, etc). Under most circumstances these ports are already opened or allowed. You must be careful to not inadvertently close them."

Here's the rest of the info jpst cites about this issue:

The following ports are needed for OUTGOING Internet communications from the Vonage device to the Vonage servers.

DNS: Port 53 UDP (Domain Name Server - for resolving server IP addresses)

TFTP: Port 69 UDP (for profile upgrades/downgrades)

HTTP: Port 80 UDP (for firmware upgrades/downgrades)

NTP: Port 123 UDP (Network Time Protocol - so the device can sync to the proper time for Caller ID)

SIP: Port 5061 UDP is used for older Vonage devices (devices provisioned before 2005) Also, BSP Proxy Groups 1-8, and communicate on port 5061.

The following ports are needed for INCOMING and OUTGOING Internet communications from and to Vonage devices and servers.

RTP (Voice) Traffic: Ports 10000-20000 UDP. When a call is made, a random port between 10000 and 20000 is used for RTP (Voice) traffic. If any of these ports are blocked, you may experience one way or no audio.

Thanks, jpst.

New Vonage Forum Member frogger has had problems receiving incoming calls. After thinking about possible causes, he decided to open a thread about the issue. He's named the thread Port Forwarding (Open Ports) with WRT54GP2/3com.

"I have a 3com OfficeConnect ADSL router serving a Linksys WRTP54G and I'm having trouble receiving incoming calls," he writes. "I know it's a port problem because when I turn off the 3com firewall, I receive calls fine.

Next, frogger provides some setup details:

The setup:

I have tried the following to no avail:
Disable NAT
Add the Vonage IP Address to the DMZ

Next he says he has tried adding the following to the Port Forwarding section, titled: "Special Applications" in 3 com setup.
Trigger Port: 5060
Trigger Type: TCP or UDP
Public Port: 10000-20000
Public Type: UDP
Trigger Port: 5061
Trigger Type: TCP or UDP
Public Port: 10000-20000
Public Type: UDP

"This still didn't work, but I can still disable the 3com firewall," he writes.

On his very first Vonage Forum post, new Forum Member Dylant2 offers a possible solution.

"I had a similar problem on the outgoing calls, but I have a different router. I would suggest you open ports from 5060 to 5070 and 10000 to 25000," he writes. "Hopefully this will solve your problem."

And thanks to you, Dylant2- great when new members jump in with advice as well as questions! Providing a place to ask questions and get answers- that's a big part of why we've hit 25,000 Members this morning!

Can You Digg It?

Digg is a free technology news website that lets you recommend articles you think others would be interested in. Digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.

According to Digg, "once a story is submitted by a user it is instantly posted in the digg area queue. This is a temporary holding place where stories wait to be promoted to the homepage. To help promote stories to the homepage, simply visit the digg area and digg stories you think are cool. Once a story has received enough diggs, it is instantly promoted. Should the story not receive enough diggs, or is reported, it eventually falls out of the digg area queue. Digg works because a large group of people actively promote good stories to the homepage.
