Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - March 28, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 28, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll look at what Vonage and a leading consumer electronics retailer are doing to raise consumer familiarity with Vonage and with Voip in general. We'll check in on a top-performing Realtor who found Vonage a home, and checking in on an auction where the proceeds may enable less fortunate folks to find homes, too. We'll look at two Vonage Voip Forums threads- one about compatible phone equipment for the Vonage service, and the other about some call waiting issues a Vonage Forum Member has been experiencing.

In The News

Vonage Demos At CompUSA Prove Beneficial

TWICE (This Week In Consumer Electronics) notes today that CompUSA has dedicated space to demonstrate working phones from Vonage to show customers how VoIP works and let them place calls directly in store to anywhere in the world.

That's according to Brian Woods, CompUSA's merchandising executive VP.

While initially skeptical about how well Voip would sell, Woods said he has been pleasantly surprised by the results. “We thought with all the complexity there would be confusion.”

“The biggest concern people have is: 'Does it work like a regular phone?'” he adds

Vonage senior sales VP Matthew Deatrick said the company "recognized the value of educating customers in the retail environment where choice is the prevailing goal."

Vonage Realtor Wins Award

Now here's some news that I admit that only the most eager Vonage watchers could possibly be interested in. But since it involves Vonage and money, yes, it is news.

Yesterday, commercial real estate company Grubb & Ellis named their Circle of Excellence Top Producers award-winners. If you think that might involve which of their commercial Realtors wrote the most business, you'd be right.

Anyway, Grubb & Ellis' executive vice-president Ben Shapiro won the Industrial category, and finished third overall among their thousands of professionals. Among Edison, N.J.-based Shapiro's accomplishments, he handled the deal for Vonage to move into their new headquarters in Holmdel. "His recent transactions include the 350,000-square-foot headquarters office for Vonage, the leading provider of Voip communications services," Grubb & Ellis tells us, "and a 575,000-square-foot regional distribution facility for United Stationers."

Sounds like a pro you would want on your side the next time you go looking for a company HQ.

Today Is Final Day For George Clooney's Vonage Auction

Now we go from folks with plenty of real estate to those who no longer have any. In an effort to help Hurricane Katrina victims, Oscar presenter George Clooney is working with United Way to auction the gifts he received for appearing on the Academy Awards telecast. The auction, which includes a Vonage Broadband Phone System, ends tonight at 11:59 p.m. It's on the United Way site at:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Compatible VoIP Telephones, Vonage Forum Member Gordg3 describes his issue and then asks his question.

"Currently using an RT31P2 that has problems," he writes. "Thinking of going to a different router and Uniden UIP 200 telephone. Was wondering if this phone will work with Vonage or are they only supporting equipment that they sell (like the UIP1869V)?"

Less than five minutes after Gordg3 posts his question, fellow Vonage Forum Member mharvey posts the answer.

"You can only use Vonage supplied Voip phones or phone adapters," mharvey writes. "There is currently no way around this."

Vonage Forum Member - and "Simpsons" fan- sbmlat  has a question about the "call waiting" feature associated with Vonage's service. So he decided to start a thread and name it -- Call waiting

Sbmlat writes that when he call my home number and if it's busy (somebody talking on the phone) then he hears it ring few times but then the call just drops.

"My question why it won't go to the answering machine or why it won't keep on ringing till the other party changes the line?," sbmlat writes.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member blakadher offers an answer.

"It won't go to the answering machine because if someone is using the line there's no way for the answering machine to pick up the incoming call," he writes. "As for why the call just drops instead of continuing to ring I have no idea. That sounds like a bug that should be reported to Vonage.

Then blakadher tells sbmlat that if he doesn't have voice mail or Call Forwarding enabled on the line then he would think the call would continue to ring until someone picked it up or the calling party hung up.

Can You Digg It?

Digg is a free technology news website that lets you recommend articles you think others would be interested in. Digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.

According to Digg, "once a story is submitted by a user it is instantly posted in the digg area queue. This is a temporary holding place where stories wait to be promoted to the homepage. To help promote stories to the homepage, simply visit the digg area and digg stories you think are cool. Once a story has received enough diggs, it is instantly promoted. Should the story not receive enough diggs, or is reported, it eventually falls out of the digg area queue. Digg works because a large group of people actively promote good stories to the homepage. Since this site's content is user-driven, it is up to YOU to contribute.
