Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

First, I have some interesting news. On Saturday afternoon we logged the 70,000th post to the Vonage Voip Forum. Way to go!

In the news, we'll see how Vonage Canada is reacting to some new recommendations put out by the Canadian governmental body that oversees the telephony industry. We'll also see how a racing team co-sponsored by Vonage did over the weekend. We'll look at two Vonage Voip Forums threads about router issues. And finally, this being Monday, we'll meet our latest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage Canada Pleased With Telecom Regulator Recommendations

The Canadian Radio Television Commission released a policy review report that recommends to the right of Canadian consumers to access publicly available Internet applications and content of their choice.

Vonage Canada says it is pleased with the findings.

"Vonage  applauds the report's recommendation that free and open Internet access be maintained," says Bruce Robertson, director marketing programs, Vonage Canada. "Vonage has been fighting to protect "net neutrality" so that Canadians have the freedom to do what they want with their Internet access, including taking advantage of Voip phone service."

Vonage Canada  is also encouraged by the panel's call for deregulation of the telecom industry. However, they have urged the Canadian government to maintain an appropriate level of regulation where there is the possibility for significant market power and potential for abuse.

"Deregulating too quickly, before the playing field has been leveled with more and fair competition, will risk entrenching a duopoly of dominant telephone and cable companies, all with similar products and pricing, leading to little competition and choice for consumers," said Robertson. "Vonage is concerned the pendulum is swinging too far in the wrong direction. Vonage hopes the government ensures the incumbent telephone companies and cable companies will not be allowed to practice anti-competitive behavior such as predatory pricing that will in the long term negatively impact Canadians, stifle competition and hinder innovation."

This regulation dispute began back when Vonage Canada also filed a complaint with the CRTC about the cable operator's practices. Vonage asked the Commission to investigate why Shaw is currently charging Vonage subscribers a $10 "quality of service enhancement" fee, or hidden Voip tax. Vonage expressed it was worried that Shaw's actions could cause that Vonage subscribers could opt to switch to Shaw's own Voip offering. The switch would eliminate the fee.

"Because Vonage competes directly with the telephone services of the network operators that also provide the high-speed Internet access, the incentives to discriminate against us are clear. This will result in less innovation, less choice and higher prices for Canadian consumers in the long run," Vonage Canada said in its petition.

"If the type of action represented by Shaw's (enhancement) service is not seriously investigated and addressed by the Commission, there will be a heightened risk of a duopoly in local voice (phone) services that will unduly favor the phone and cable companies who provide the Internet access," Vonage Canada added.

"In the absence of credible, complete information, there is good reason to believe (Shaw's) service offering is not an enhancement to Shaw's high-speed Internet service but rather is an anti-competitive measure aimed at either increasing the perceived cost, or damaging the perceived reliability, of the services of independent Internet telephone service providers when compared to Shaw's higher-priced phone service," Vonage Canada stated.

Vonage Co-Sponsored Race Car Finishes Back In The Pack

On Saturday evening, at the Grand Prix of Miami, Pacific Coast Motorsports #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley finished 13th place in the Daytona Prototype battle at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The race featured PCM teammates Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel.

Alex and I have raced at Long Beach before and I won there in 2004 in the Atlantic series so I think we're best looking forward than dwelling on tonight's events," Dalziel said.

Figge, a Californian-native, echoed his team-mate's sentiments:

"It's been a bit of a rollercoaster of a weekend but we had nothing to take the fight to the Porsche teams. I was fairly satisfied with my stint all things considered but it was frustrating not being able to crack the top-ten. We'll get out of here and start preparing for Long Beach," added Figge. "I'm pumped we're doing some street racing and it's a home race for both myself, the team and for Playboy so it should be a fun weekend!"

Round 4 of the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, the 'Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach', will take place on April7 and 8 in Long Beach, Calif.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member usevon would like to do just that (use Vonage). 

But usevon's got a router setup to do first, which is why he's started a new Vonage Forum thread to which he has given the name, Help with Vonage/PAP2/BSNL.

"I have BSNL with HUAWEI MT841 type modem cum router. It has DHCP enabled," usevon says, adding that he is able to browse the Internet through his PC. 

His big issue though, starts with the fact that he has  to connect every time to logon. "But when I connect PAP2 to MT841, I see the Internet light on PAP2 lit, but the phone line is not being lit and hence no dial tone. -I tried setting MT841 to static IP - didn't work -I tried PAP2 setting to both static and dynamic IP and it didn't fix the problem," he informs us.

"I have Time Warner Cable. The cable modem plugs into my F5d7230-4 wireless G router and then the phone adapter (VT1005V from Motorola) is plugged into that," he writes "Everything seems to be working good." 

Well, it doesn't seem that all of usevon's connection pieces are meshing all that well. Less than an hour after usevon made his post, Vonage Forum Member Steve48 answers.

"You need to talk to your ISP and ask them how to set up the router to handle the log in functions so that it stays on line all the time. It may involve something like enabling PPPoE and putting your password in the router," he advises usevon. "As long as you need to log on using the computer, I think you'll continue to have problems."

On a new Vonage Forum thread with the title phone 1 light not lit, status: Router still restarting. Plea, (maybe that is short for "please") new Vonage Forum Member doxiegirl writes that although she recently signed up for Vonage and loves it! and  hooked into her home wiring a few days ago (disconnected all wires from box outside per other posts) , all was working well. Then, "all of the sudden none of my phones work. I unplugged all but (line)1. No dialtone." 

Then doxiegirl writes that she disconnected from the home wiring and just plugged one hardwired phone directly to the rt31p2. "I didn't think to look if the phone 1 light was lit until now, and it's not. I unplugged everything and powered back up, first cable modem, then rt31p2, then plugged phone in, and still phone 1 is not lit and no dialtone," she adds. "Voice status on the router says 'Router still restarting. Please wait a moment.' "

Once again, it is Steve48  with some advice.

"You've done the right things. I hate to say it, but it looks like a dead router," Steve48 writes. "Try powering down again," he advises doxiegirl. "Wait at least 5 minutes before powering back up, and leave the phone unplugged until the light comes on. If that doesn't work, try a hard reset on the RT31P2."

Steve48 adds that if that solution doesn't work, doxiegirl should call Vonage tech support.
