Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 21, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up with Vonage's E911 progress, and see which Vonage-related search terms Yahoo! users are entering the most. We'll also go over two Vonage Voip Forum threads about setup-related issues.

In The News

Vonage Adds E911 In 170 Calling Centers

This past week alone, Vonage equipped an additional 170 calling centers in over 35 new counties with E911 -- bringing the total number of calling centers across the nation with emergency service to over 3600, which is more than half of the nation's Public Safety Answering Points (or PSAPs, for short).

"Today close to 70 percent of our customers have full E911 capability," says Vonage chairman Jeffrey Citron. "While it took Vonage less than a year to turn on E911 in more than half of the nation's PSAPs, it took the wireless industry 10 years to accomplish the same feat. And Vonage will continue to work with the FCC ( News - Alert), regulators, Congress and public safety until PSAPs across the nation are equipped with E911.

We've posted a list of these counties and PSAPs at

Here Are The 25 Most-Searched-For Vonage Terms on Yahoo!

Yahoo! is doing an interesting game called Buzz Game with technology publisher O'Reilly. As part of the game, players "bet" on which search terms will be most popular over a given period. Search terms can be for a company, an entertainer, a politician, or pretty much anything else as long as it isn't X-rated.

As part of the results, Yahoo! Research publishes the most requested search terms for each of the entities involved in Buzz Game. I just found a list of these terms for Vonage. Here's the link.

Meanwhile, though, I thought it would be fun to list the Top 25 Vonage-related Yahoo! search terms here, in rank of number of requests. Here's the standings as of early this morning:

  1. Vonage
  2. Vonage phone
  3. Vonage broadband
  4. Vonage commercials
  5. Vonage phone service
  6. Vonage tv commercial song
  7. Vonage review
  8. Vonage stock
  9. Vonage forum (yes!-Dan)
  10. Vonage phone company
  11. Vonage canada
  12. Vonage internet phone service
  13. Vonage stock symbol
  14. Vonage broadband telephone
  15. Vonage holdings corp
  16. Vonage Voip
  17. tivo and Vonage
  18. Vonage cell phones
  19. Vonage theme song
  20. Vonage commercial music
  21. Vonage ipo
  22. Vonage ads
  23. Vonage wireless
  24. Vonage digital
  25. Vonage 911

You know what? We have Forums or threads on just about all of those topics! And because we do, let's go to the Vonage Voip Forum and read what you're talking about today.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Fine tuning, new Vonage Forum Member jamepc asks some detailed setup questions.

"I have my Vonage system hooked up and working. I have a Linksys RT31P2 adaptor plugged into my Belkin Pre-N Router plugged into my cable modem," he writes.

"I want to start tinkering! Can this RT31P2 be accessed like other Linksys routers (192.168.x.x)?," he asks. "Are there settings to mess around with? Or is 3rd party firmware needed as I read somewhere?"

"The IP address for configuring the RT31P2 is," Vonage Forum Member pdhenry replies. "You need to be physically connected to the RT31P2 unless you have turned on Remote Administration."

Then pdhenry notes that Vonage Forum Member (and Member of the Week) NateHoy has some pages dealing with configuring a Vonage router behind another router. Here's the link.

Next, jamepc comes back with a follow-up question.

"To enable Remote Admin, the RT31P2 needs to be connected 'out front' first so I can access it, enable Remote Administration, then put it 'out back' again? "How do I decide which Port Number to select for Remote Admin?," jamepc asks.

"I see in the manual there is Application-Based QoS and Voice QoS," he adds. "Should I enable these since my score was 3.5? What settings should I select? What are some other recommended changes I should make while I'm in there (once I get in)."

Then, pdhenry comes back with a reply.

"The RT31P2 doesn't have to be out front, but to get to the Admin page (to enable Remote Admin) your computer needs to be connected to one of the LAN ports on the RT31P2. Once you've enabled Remote Admin you can connect the PC back to the 'main' router (wired or wireless)," he writes.

"I don't know what port you're supposed to use but I see that the page I linked to you illustrates using port 8080," pdhenry adds.

"When you're directly connected to the RT31P2," pdhenry points out, "the default IP address for the config screen in, but once you have remote admin enabled and you're connected to the other router you use whatever address the main router's DHCP has assigned to the RT31P2 with port 8080 (or whatever) as in"

New Vonage Forum Member spendem  has some setup questions. He decided to start a thread and name it, Configuration for internet.

"How do we configure to access my email, web, or VPN parallel to Voice," he writes, then adding some basic information about the equipment he is using with his Vonage service.

"Should be no real setup required, other than plugging it in," NateHoy writes. "If your Vonage line is working, then the RTP300 is able to talk out on the Internet, and you should be able to connect a computer to any of the LAN ports and just do what you were doing before - use the Internet."

NateHoy then advises spendem that the RTP300 may or may not be compatible with his VPN solution. "What VPN are you using, and how does it connect to the VPN server?," NateHoy asks. "Other than what specific problems are you having?

"If you are getting reports of poor audio on the other end of your calls," NateHoy adds, "then you will probably need to pick up a better router that can handle QoS (Quality of Service)."

NateHoy then closes his post with a link to an article he has written about QoS. Here's the link.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read, new Vonage Forum Member jamepc had a question about the testyourvoip test. That reminds me that a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest !!
