Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll see how Vonage is doing against the competition, what Voip subscribers think of their quality of service, and also what a leading Internet expert thinks about the idea some big phone companies have proposed to charge fees to competitors like Vonage in order to ensure quality of service. We'll also look at Vonage Voip Forum threads about call quality and what happened to a reader's Vonage service when the fiber optic cable that serves his town was cut. I'll also tell you about a very useful new area on the Vonage Forum.



In The News

Vonage Increases Subscriber Lead Against Competition

According to a study released yesterday by market research firm Telphia, around 3.9 million U.S. households used Voip as home-phone service in January 2006. That accounts for about 3.5% of U.S. households, up from 2.9% using Voip in June 2005.

The study did not take into account Voip services as part of larger bundled offerings from some broadband cable and DSL providers, but other studies have shown that Vonage has more subscribers than bundled Voip does. Plus, it is far from clear how many subscribers to bundled Voip signed up with their cable or DSL provider for that reason. Yet with non-cable or non-DSL companies like Vonage, it is plain to tell why subscribers have signed up.

And those subscribers seem to mostly be a contented group.

 About 86% of respondents to the Telphia survey said voice quality was equal to or better than traditional phone service. A similar percentage said they considered Voip to be equally or more reliable than standard phone service.

Of the non-cable Voip services, Vonage leads the pack with a 47.5% market share, up from a 40% share last June. Vonage had almost four times the U.S. share of its closest competitor, Skype. Primarily a softphone company that many believe offers far fewer call features than Vonage, Skype placed second with an 11.8% share.

Vonage Wants Net Neutrality- And So Does Larry Lessig

The Spring 2006 VON conference and convention has just started in San Jose, Calif. I am not there personally, but I know some folks who are.

I'm reading that Stanford University Law professor Larry Lessig gave a speech at VON yesterday in which he said that letting big phone and cable companies charge rates to competing service providers (like Vonage, for instance, would stifle innovation.

Lessig warned that regulating public IP networks that carry Internet traffic so their owners can charge more for allowing certain traffic types would effectively give the network owners power to control applications and content. "You would be able to innovate only as you get permission from the network owner," Lessig said.

 "The Internet produced by end-to-end applications is more valuable to the economy than the network that gets produced under (large phone company_ ownership," he added.


On The Vonage Voip Forum

Now let us see what new issues Vonage Forum Members are talking about today.

We often get threads started by new Vonage users. Sometimes, they post to resolve connection issues, other times to get equipment recommendations, sometimes even to vent just a bit.

New Vonage Forum Member bandito has started a thread called Need Help... New Vonage User. He thinks the call quality on his new Vonage service could be better. But rather than rant about it, he is seeking solutions.

First, he posts his testyourvoip results. Then, obviously sounding a little frustrated, he writes that "Ok... so what am I doing wrong, I can make and recieve calls, my upload/download speed looks ok, right?

"My Settings on my Vonage account is set to 90kpbs... whats the deal," he asks.

Then Vonage Forum Member norriton- who I notice has been posting lots of helpful responses - adds another post that fits that description.

"Your packet loss figures seem very high. Do you have other traffic on your internet connection at the time," he asks bandito.

I"n any case, can you connect the PAP2 directly to the cable modem and give that a try," norriton adds. "If that helps, then it is likely some problem with your router.

"If that does not help, you should contact your ISP as it is likely them (or your cable modem itself)," he suggests.

Now here's an interesting story. On a new Vonage Forum thread called Entire town had no phone service, but I did!, Vonage Forum Member jasperaxle writes that someone cut his local  phone company's fiber optic cable in town today and his whole city was without phone service all afternoon.

Maybe the "whole city," but as for jasperaxle, his telecommunications "axle" kept turning during the outage.

"My phone worked perfectly though," he writes. "Thanks Vonage!"

Finally, our Comcast vs. Vonage thread, which got picked up by ZDNet and Slashdot, is still extremely active with Vonage user stories of how and why they think that Comcast is not doing their best to provide the best services for Vonage customers who access Vonage over Comcast's broadband Internet services. Just in the last day or two, more Vonage Forum Members have been including screen shots of tests they have performed on their connections.
