In the news, we'll learn what one Vonage subscriber is using the money he is saving on his phone bill for. We'll also look at Vonage VoIP Forum threads about dial tone and voice mail issues. I'll also tell you about a very useful new area on the Vonage Forum.

Vonage Savings On Phone Bill Goes to "Diaper Fund"

Interviewed in today's San Francisco Chronicle, advertising exec Ron Hirson describes how signing up with Vonage last August has not only helped him cut his phone bill in half, but has enabled him to find a better place to spend that extra money.

That would be into a diaper fund for his baby, which is due soon.

Seven months ago, Ron Hirson cut his phone bill by more than half and is putting his savings into a diaper fund for his baby on the way.

"I always felt I was getting ripped off by the phone company," Hirson tells the Chronicle's Ryan Kim. Signing up with Vonage "is definitely a step in the right direction."

Taking a look at the growth of the Voip industry in which Vonage is the largest provider in terms of numbers of subscribers, TeleGeography analyst Paul Brodsky tells Kim, "if you look at the take-up rate of VoIP, it's astonishing.

And as to the "diaper fund"- hey Ron, as both a Vonage user and someone who regularly had to buy diapers not all that long ago, I hear ya.

Now let us see what new issues Vonage Forum Members are talking about today.

New Vonage Forum Member cleaster has been having a rough time getting a dial tone for his Vonage service. Because of this, he has started a new thread named No dial tone.

In cleaster's thread-kickoff post he posts his testyourvoipresults, which are:

3. Upload and download speeds:

5. Type of Vonage adapter used: RTP300-VD
6. Setup of Network Modem: Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing: No dial tone.
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

Doing this has given some of cleaster's fellow Vonage Forum Members the info they need to ask questions that may help them diagnose the problem.

"Is the phone light lit? If not, first try re-booting your setup. Unplug your phone," writes Steve48. "Power everything down, then power up the modem, wait for 2 minutes, power up the RTP300, then power up the PC and plug in the phone. That may get it working.

Steve48 then asks cleaster if his Voip test results are made with the RTP300 in the circuit? "If so, you obviously have internet service through the device. Go to the admin page on the RTP ( What does it say on the voice section of the status tab?," he asks.

"If your phone light is lit and you're not getting a dial tone, first check your cabling and the phone itself," Steve 48 asks. "If that's not it, get back to us."

Then cleaster comes back on and says that the phone light is not lit.

Next we have VonageTPA, whose once again lives up to his designation as Vonage Forum Member of the Week by offering this helpful advice:

"As a side note, a 3.3 on the testmyvoip test isnt' going to give you great voice quality... your internet connection might not quite be up to snuff either, which could possibly cause problems," he writes.

With help from other Forum Members, cleaster is working through this issue, and we'll keep you up to date on its resolution. 

New Vonage Forum Member back40 has been experiencing some problems with his Vonage voice mail, so he's started a thread called 50% of calls going right to VM, never ringing.

"About 50% of the time I call my Vonage number, the call never rings and goes right into (voice mail). If I hang up and call right back, the call goes through," he writes. "Occasionally I have had to try 3-4 times.

"Any idea what's causing this?," adds back40. "I have a very lightly used 5MB DSL connection and a PAP2."

Steve48 takes a stab at this one, too.

"First try re-booting all your equipment and powering back up in the right order- typically modem, wait, router, wait, PAP2. If that doesn't fix the problem, try to verify that your system is, in fact, working at the time that the incoming failures occur (though it seems that it is since a follow-up call works)," he writes.

Steve48 then adds these suggestions:

"Do you have a network availability number set up on your account? If not, see if you can set one up and check whether the failed incoming calls go to voicemail or to the network availability number. Also try disabling voicemail on your account and then re-enabling it."
