Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - March 6, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 6, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I have some great news. Today marks the third anniversary of the Vonage Forum! Couldn't have done this without your questions, comments, answers, problems- and, solutions - and even your clicks and page views. We are an ever-growing and vibrant community. Thanks, everyone.

In the news, we'll see what Comcast says about rumors they are blocking Vonage access, earn how a Vonage-sponsored auto racing team did this weekend, and catch up on a weekend event where lots of prominent folks received Vonage VTech phones. We'll also go over interesting Vonage Voip Forum threads about Apple routers, and how quickly it takes new Vonage users to get a Vonage phone number.

In The News

Comcast Says They Aren't Blocking Vonage Calls

Last week, Slashdot and ZDNet both picked up our Comcast vs. Vonage thread in which many of our Vonage Forum Members seem to think that Comcast is purposely hindering Vonage calls for Comcast users. And that thread sure got some responses: 210 posts and closing in on 20,000 page views...

This morning, Comcast is denying that this occurs, and Vonage says they have no knowledge of this happening either.

"Comcast does not block access to Vonage or any other providers of Internet traffic," Jeanne Russo, Comcast corporate communications director for high-speed Internet and digital voice communications, tells PC Magazine.

"To my knowledge, these rumors are hearsay," adds a spokesperson for Vonage.

Vonage Car In Disappointing Finish

Pacific Coast Motorsports hopes of a lead finish in the second round of the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series, held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City yesterday, got derailed due to electrical problems. That's because the #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype driven by Ryan Dalziel and Alex Figge encountered electrical difficulties with ten laps remaining dropping the team from fifth to an 11th place finish as the race ended.

Well, I don't drive race cars, but I have had cars with electrical problems. So, Ryan and Alex, I feel your pain.

But in another contest this weekend, there were winners worth celebrating:

Oscar Presenters Receive Vonage VTech Phone

Well, the Oscars are over. Some expected winners, and a big surprise at the end.

Now if Oscar presenters want to talk to each other or to their friends, they will be able to use their new Vonage VTech Broadband Voip phone system, the ip8100. For opening up the winning envelope and telling the world who won in the category they were presenting on Each presenter got the $550-priced phone.

Presenters due to get the Vonage VTech phone included Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hanks, Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lopez, Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Lily Tomlin and Reese Witherspoon.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread called airport express or airport extreme isn't about the fastest way to get to the airport to catch a flight. It concerns a recommendation for the best Apple router to use with the Vonage service. The thread has been started by new Vonage Forum Member jstein99.

"I am really thinking about signing up with Vonage," he writes. I have a Powerbook G4 and I also want to order Airport extreme or Airport express. Which would be more suitable to use with Vonage?"

Several Vonage Forum Members see jstein99's post and help with their opinions.

"I use Airport Express and I have Vonage," Vonage Forum Member hookbill writes. "I can tell you that I have had no problems with Vonage or AE interfering with each other, if that's what you are wondering. I am not familiar with Airport Extreme."

"I am using the Airport Extreme plugged directly into the Linksys RT31P2 or whatever the old Linksys Vonage Router number is," writes Vonage Forum Member jbkalla. "My PowerMac G4 is also plugged directly into the Vonage Router, as is my Samsung network printer. My Airport Express is extending my network downstairs to my stereo (so I can stream iTunes)."

Then jbkalla adds that he has had no problems with any of these, though the Linksys Router is continuously disconnecting from the Cable Modem. "I believe it is the fault of the Router, and not any of the connected items. I would get the Extreme if you can, and maybe the Express if you have a laptop and want an extremely portable wireless-G network to carry around," he advises jstein99.

Next, Vonage Forum Member biffdebris adds a post with his experiences.

"We have an AirPort Extreme connected to our internet connection (a SmartBridge wireless connection). Our two iMacs connect via their AirPort cards," he writes. "We have two AirPort Expresses, one to stream iTunes to the stereo and the other to provide an internet connection to the RT31P2. Vonage service is as good as it can be."

I've noticed that many one of the first questions many new Vonage Forum Members ask is how soon they can get a Vonage number. In fact, new Vonage Forum Member E109760 has started that type of thread, which he named How long to get a number?

"I signed up for service 6 days ago. I have called customer service a couple of times and they just give me a run-around about waiting another 24-48 hours," he writes." My question is, am I being too impatient? Should it take this long to get the phone number?"

"My numbers have been issued almost immediately. I thought I got an email fairly quickly with the information," posts Vonage Forum Member outerfire. "If that wasn't the case, I know it was in the dashboard when I logged into the newly created account."

Then Vonage Forum Member xene comes on the "scene" to state his case that the wait for a Vonage number is hardly a wait at all.

"You can actually get your new Vonage phone # in a few minutes after you've signed up," he writes. "Just check your webaccount--log in and you'll see in your acct your new Vonage phone #.

Then xene follows up with another post with more info.

"Even if you still dont have the adapter, you are already (almost immediately) assigned a new number...that is IF you requested to be assigned to a new one," he writes. "If you wanted to keep your existing phone#, it takes 10-14 biz days for it to be completed.

"Nonetheless, you are assigned a temp Vonage # so when the equipment comes, you can start using the service," xene adds. "No worries about possibly missing calls because your temp # will be linked to your original phone # (the one Vonage is referring), so u can still expect all calls to be routed to you."

This is Monday, time to meet our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week. Because this week marks our third birthday, I thought it would be appropriate to honor the Vonage Forum Member with more than twice the number of Forum posts than anyone else. I wouldn't award this honor if these posts weren't knowledgeable and helpful, but they are. So for all of his helpful posts and answers (more than 2,800 at last count- including some today) it is appropriate to give reebok our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. To read a list of some of reebok's more recent posts, click here.

A Bit About Who We Are

Because we are three years old today and have picked up so many new Members in recent weeks today would be a good day to clear up any misconceptions that a few of you might have had over the years about whether or not this site "is part" of Vonage.

No, we are not. Although we actively discuss Vonage products and services, the Vonage Forums are exclusively owned & operated by 4Sight Media LLC & is no way endorsed, sponsored, provided, owned or otherwise controlled by Vonage.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
