Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll tell you about some added capability for Vonage's E911 network, and why some Oscar night celebrities may soon become Vonage customers. We'll also look at a Vonage Voip Forum thread about Caller ID issues, and another thread from more than one pleased Vonage user- including one user and Forum Member who found that persistence with his broadband ISP really helped!

Vonage Adds E911 In 125 Calling Centers

Vonage has announced that almost all of its customers have basic 911 service and that it is continuing to quickly equip new counties across the nation every day with Enhanced 911 service -- a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number. In less than two weeks, Vonage turned on E911 service at an additional 125 calling centers, in over 40 new counties, bringing the total number of Vonage customers with E911 to nearly 60 percent. .

"Currently, a majority of our customers have full E911 capability," says Vonage's Chairman Jeffrey Citron. "In just over a month, we have turned on E911 in over 740 PSAPs and 190 new counties across the nation. By comparison, it took the wireless industry 10 years to turn on emergency 911 service in one-half of the nation's PSAPs, a feat we've accomplished in less than a year. And Vonage will continue to work with the FCC, regulators, Congress and public safety until PSAPs across the nation are equipped with E911."

Vonage Will Give VTech Phones To Oscar Winners, Presenters

The Academy Awards are being given out Sunday night, and I know many of you Vonage Forum Members and Vonage users will be watching.

But it also seems like Vonage will be picking up some new and famous customers at the Oscars.

That's because, according to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, Vonage is giving presenters and honorees at the Academy Awards its new VTech Expandable Broadband phone system (worth $550).

Of course if any famous actors and directors sign up for the Vonage service as a result of these gifts - and if they have questions, well, we'll be more than happy to have you join the Vonage Voip Forum.

For now, though, let's see what some of the current Vonage Forum Members are up to, posting-wise.

Vonage Forum Member utmba95 keeps having a problem with bad dates (Hey when I was single I had that problem too from time to time-Dan).

Nope, sorry, not those types of bad dates. The ones that he discusses in a new Vonage Forum thread he's started and named, Caller ID date & Time wrong.

"Recently my caller ID keeps jumping back to Sep 9 with a wrong time. Any ideas where the problem lies?," utmba95 asks, adding that yesterday it started working again, but today it is wrong.

"Sounds like your Vonage adapter is unable to get a connection to update the time," fellow Vonage Forum Member NateHoy quickly responds. "What Vonage adapter do you have, and is it behind another router or any other device other than your modem? Obviously, it has a connection, because you are getting the calls."

Then NateHoy explains what he suspects might be the technical root cause of utmba95's problem.

"But time updates generally happen over the NTP (Network Time Protocol) port, which is port 123, using UDP as the protocol. Can your computers update their time off the Internet time servers?," he asks.

"Thanks for the info on how it gets the time. My Comcast has been going down a lot lately, and that seemed to mess it up," utmba95 responds. "I just rebooted my RTP300 and it got the correct time. It is behind a Linksys WRT54G, but it appears to allow that port through. Now whenever my cable modem goes down I'll have to reboot it + WRT54G + two RTP300's."

After reading utmba95's response, NateHoy follows up by putting up a new post with additional feedback.

'You may find that a DHCP release/renew forces an NTP lookup, but frankly by the time you logged into the screen on the RTP300, got to the status page, and released and renewed the DHCP address.. heck, you could reboot it faster than that!," NateHoy writes.

"Get yourself three small el cheapo power strips," NateHoy adds, suggesting that then, utmba95 "plug the cable modem into one, the WRT54G into another, and your two RTP300's into the third. Turn them all off, then turn on cable modem, wait 20 seconds, router, wait 20 seconds, RTP300. Done. You can also get yourself one of those "power control centers" with a switch for each plug."

As a final thought, NateHoy admits that this procedure can be a pain, "but easier than yanking DC cables out of the back of the units all the time, and better for wear and tear."

Although we get our fair share of sharp-edged questions here on the Vonage Forum, we get our share of threads from very satisfied customers as well.

I realize that if we highlighted these threads all the time here in the Digest, many readers would have their eyes glaze over. But once every several weeks, I like to point to such a thread - especially if I feel the posts in that thread add something of interest to the Vonage Forum Membership as a whole.

Today is one of those days. I was reading a new thread named Brand New User and...Happy, Happy, Happy!. The thread was started by new Vonage Forum Member TommyVOIP.

"The setup went just as advertised; I have an existing router and followed Direction A, plugged in our cordless phone and had a dial tone instantly" writes TommyVOIP. "I called my mother in PA and my sister in Florida and spent over two hours on the phone with no dropouts and the voice quality on BOTH ends was indistinguishable from a landline. I even sent some photos to my sister in FL, a file of about 500mb while talking and there was not even a hiccup!"

Then TommyVOIP adds that although he has logged only about three hours of calling time so far, he's sold. He also uses fairly colorful language to indicate he can't wait to tell his previous phone company that he's found a far better deal for less money.

"I too am a brand new and satisfied Vonage customer," posts new Vonage Forum Member MedNewsNow. While he does describe some issues he had with his broadband ISP, MedNewsNow notes those issues appear to have been solved and since then everything has been going well with his Vonage service.

That first thread sure had several abbreviations! Just one example: DHCP- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
