Canadian Phone-Sex Fans Steaming Up The Lines

Vonage In Print News

February 12, 2006

By Misty Harris

When it comes to sex, most Canadians are phoning it in. So finds a new survey of more than 1,000 adults across the country, 53 per cent of whom admit to having engaged in intimate phone conversations with a close friend or partner.

According to Decima Research, which conducted the survey for broadband phone company Vonage Canada, sexy phone exchanges are considered an important part of a long-distance relationship by 77 per cent of Canucks. Most steam up the wires with imagination (39 per cent), receptiveness (31 per cent), creativity (30 per cent), vocalization (25 per cent) and, in the case of tactile talkers, hands-free phones (20 per cent).

"The intimate phone call, or phone sex, is not that much different than the sexy, passionate letter of old," says Kim Blank, an instructor of cultural studies at the University of Victoria. "The turnaround may be faster, but the turn-on is the same: the well-chosen words of someone far away get you in the mood."

The survey found aural encounters have an advantage over hands-on hanky-panky because there's no need to get dressed up (32 per cent), participants can do other things at the same time (17 per cent), and the need for precautions is eliminated (nine per cent).

Residents of Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Alberta were most likely to enjoy the benefits of dressing down, while those in Quebec were the country's biggest fans of multitasking. Those in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta led all regions in appreciating the absence of sexual precautions, with respondents aged 25 to 34 enjoying this factor more than any other.

Although 39 per cent of Canadians say they wouldn't interrupt an intimate phone conversation to take another call, fully 15 per cent of devoted sons and daughters would cool their jets if their mothers were on the other line.
In B.C., however, the boss takes priority over calls from mommy dearest at 14 per cent versus 10 per cent.
"Vancouver has some of the highest real estate costs (in Canada), so I'm not surprised someone would interrupt a steamy conversation with their beloved to take a call from their boss," says Clare Mezes, a Toronto-based sex therapist. "They can't afford to lose their job."

Mezes explains that the chemicals occurring in a "love cocktail" are stirred when couples "do novel things together, like phone sex." But she believes only those involved in respectful, trusting relationships are likely to experience the full benefits of a hot exchange.

"Long-distance intimacy is based on successful relationships, and successful relationships are based on effective communication," she says. Any emotional tension, anxiety or feelings of guilt could lead to a romance 9-1-1.
This may be the case for the nearly one-in-four respondents who said they would stop an intimate call if their spouse or partner showed up on call display -- suggesting many Canadians are looking outside their relationships for aural stimulation. The number was lowest in Alberta at just 13 per cent, but climbed to 32 per cent in Quebec.

Blank suggests this is evidence of the phone being used as an extension of a person's fantasy life.

"Phone sex has the potential not just for intimacy but for imagined intimacy," he says. "Sex may come from the body, but much of it is in the mind."

The Vonage survey of 1,015 Canadian adults is considered accurate within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
