Vonage - What’s The Safest and Most Powerful Sex Toy for Valentine’s Day? The Phone!

Vonage Press ReleasesVonage Canada survey finds long-distance lovers ‘keep the fires burning’ with trust, regular communication and a hands-free phone

MISSISSAUGA, ON, February 8, 2006 – What should you do if your honey is far away and you’re missing your Valentine’s Day kiss? According to a survey by Internet phone company Vonage Canada and Decima Research, engage in regular ‘intimate’ phone conversations, find imaginative and creative ways to keep the love alive, never interrupt a phone session with your loved one to answer an incoming call, and get a hands-free phone!

Ooh! Aah! Wish You Were Here!
Canadians love to make love on the phone, and consider it an important part of a long-distance relationship, according to the survey. More than half of us (53 per cent) have engaged in ‘phone sex’ with a close friend or partner. And nearly half of us (43 per cent) consider ‘phone sex’ to be very important in a long-distance relationship.

What constitutes a successful 'intimate telephone call'? Most people surveyed said 'imagination' (39 per cent), followed by 'receptiveness' and 'creativity' (31% and 30% respectively). ‘Vocalization' was the key for one quarter of respondents, and 20 per cent found a hands-free phone a 'must'!

"Loving and passionate relationships are about having a sound emotional, physical, intellectual, sexual and spiritual connection," says Clare Mezes, a Toronto-based registered couple and sex therapist with The Ontario Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and the Board of Examiners in Sexual Therapy and Counselling. “To help compensate for the absence of physical interaction, racy conversations, leaving sexy voicemail messages, sending cards with sexy notes and enjoying conversations about everyday life are all good ways to sustain a long distance relationship.”

Ooh! Aah! Oops! My Mother Is On the Line!
Many Canadians intuitively know that interrupting an intimate phone conversation to take another call is the ‘kiss of death’ in a long distance relationship. Forty per cent of survey respondents would not put their loved one ‘on hold’. Fifteen per cent of dutiful sons and daughters, however, would cool their jets if their call display indicated that their mother was on the line.

Look On The Bright Side
No doubt, the worst part of a long-distance relationship on Valentine’s Day is not having your honey around. The survey found that more than half (58 per cent) bemoaned a Valentine's Day with no face-to-face and lip-to-lip contact. A killer phone bill is no party either, and 12 per cent of respondents found high phone bills to be a drag on long distance relationships.

On the bright side, the survey found some advantages of having long distance love versus an in-person intimate encounter. You don’t have to get all dressed up for your date (mentioned by 32% of respondents); you can do other things while engaged in an intimate phone call (mentioned by 17 per cent of respondents); and you don’t have to take any precautions (mentioned by 9% of respondents).

"Long-distance relationships have become unavoidable as more people relocate to attend post-secondary school and to take new jobs," said Patti Jordan, director of marketing and communications at Vonage Canada, one of the country's leading providers of Voice over IP (VoIP) and Internet phone service. "We're just happy to be able to do our part to help keep relationships healthy and happy without breaking the bank, but what people say and do during their conversations is really none of our business."

Among the other findings:

  • More men than women (60 per cent vs. 55 per cent) thought the lack of "face-to-face or lip-to-lip contact" was the most frustrating part of a long-distance relationship on Valentine’s Day. Quebecers rank "a killer phone bill" ahead of "don't get to go out" as the worst part of a Valentine’s Day without their loved one.

  • The survey found that nearly 40 per cent of Canadians would not interrupt an intimate phone conversation for an incoming call. In Alberta, more than 50 per cent said they would stay focused and ignore the incoming call. Whose call would make them interrupt some steamy talk? British Columbia appears to have the most dedicated work force. Compared to other regions in Canada, more west coasters would interrupt phone sex if the call display showed it was their boss. In fact, more would answer their boss' call than their mother or best friend.

  • More than three quarters of Canadians believe intimate phone calls are "very" or "somewhat" important to a long-distance relationship. Atlantic Canadians are the most randy: 57 per cent said phone sex was "very" important. Quebecers appear the most indifferent with only 34 per cent saying it was "very" important.

  • When asked the biggest advantage of "phone sex" over physical sex, the number one answer by Quebecers was "you can do other things at the same time." Albertans ranked "you don't have to take precautions" higher than any other region in Canada. Almost one in two homemakers said phone sex's biggest advantage was "not having to get all dressed up."

About the Survey
The survey was carried out on behalf of Vonage Canada by Decima Research (January 26 - 30, 2006) as part of a Decima Televox National Telephone Omnibus survey. Decima Research questioned 1,015 randomly selected Canadian adults more than 18 years of age. With a sample size of 1,000, the survey data is accurate +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
