Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll catch up on what the venture capital industry is saying about Vonage's Initial Public Offering, and find out where you can download a free podcast that talks about Vonage's marketing strategy. We'll read a Vonage Voip Forum thread about assigning an IP address to a Linksys RTP 300, as well as a thread from a Vonage Forum Member who is asking about the quality of Vonage service over high speed Internet connections in a city he is likely to be moving to.

Venture Capital Industry Chief Calls Vonage IPO "Significant"

The president of the National Venture Capital Association thinks that Vonage's Initial Public Offering IPO is significant not only for Vonage, but for the entire technology industry. 

"This is a significant technology IPO. And if they do well post-IPO, for the next couple of months here, that may kind of break a logjam that has developed for venture IPOs in general," Heesen tells the Baltimore Sun's Jay Hancock. 

"Maybe, maybe this is a signal that the investing public is open to technology-based IPOs again," Heesen said.

Based on the comments of Heesen and others, Hancock writes that the IPO will be one of the most important initial public offerings of technology shares this year, "and some in the industry hope it will set the stage for a long-awaited, sustainable tech recovery."

Free Podcast About Vonage's Marketing is Available for Download

A podcast is an audio Webcast that is made available for downloading from the Web. Although there is no formal connection between Podcasts and iPods, podcasts get their name because most iPods can play podcasts in the file format in which they are made.

There's a new free podcast available for download in which Internet advertising executive Alex Hooshmand of Right Media discusses the marketing strategy of Vonage as well as some other companies.

Entitled "Acquisition Marketing," the podcast is 20 minutes long, takes up 13.6 megabytes of space and is in the MP3 file format. It is available for download on the website of internet advertising and marketing news website iMediaConnection from this page. If you prefer, though, you can download this podcast directly from this link.

In a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called RTP300 Static IP Address, Vonage Forum Member addweb describes what he would like to do and why.

"I would like to assign a static IP address to my RTP300 which sits behind my Linksys router," addweb explains. "The RTP 300 gets an IP of 192.168.10.140, and locally stays as 192.168.15.1. With this my phone works fine, but since no PCs are plugged directly into the RTP300 i cant get to the web based admin. 

"What I want to do it set the RTP300 to a static IP address, say 192.168.10.10, and then be able to get to the web based admin thru the PCs that are already connected to my Linksys," he says. Yet addweb adds that each time he's tried to set the static IP to the 192.168.10.x, he couldn't get back into the router. 

Vonage Forum Member blakadher is the first up with advice.

"Does your Linksys router (not the RTP300) allow for assigning a specific IP to a MAC?," he asks. "If it does, then you can assign one to the RTP300 and it will always have that IP.

"If the Linksys router does not support IP assignment by MAC then you'll have to change the RTP300 from obtaining an IP automatically to having a static IP," blakadher points out. "You'll then get a new set of entry fields where you can assign an IP outside the range that your Linksys DHCP assigns.

"As for accessing the admin functions on the RTP300, you'll have to hook up a PC to it, go into admin, and enable remote access," blakadher adds. "It'll default to port 8080 and then you can get to the admin page from your other PCs using http://assignedIP:8080."

Then addweb makes a follow-up post requesting clarification from blakadher.

"So what your sayings as it is now... I can connect a pc to the RTP300, enable remote admin on port 8080 and then i can connect the pc to the WRT54GL and be able to get to the rtp300 thru http://192.168.10.140:8080?," addweb asks.

Blakadher comes right back at him (addweb) and confirms this.

Then, NateHoy comes to this thread and writes just the kind of post that shows why he is our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Hey, Dan here. I agree- NateHoy's article mentioned above is very useful and easy to understand.

On the Vonage Forums over the years (three years exactly, next month), I've noticed that from time to time a Member who is or is thinking seriously about becoming, a Vonage user asks about the state of Vonage service over Internet broadband service providers in a region or city he is thinking of moving to. Considering that we've signed up more than 23,000 Members from all 50 states, pretty much every city in these states - plus not to mention Canada and several foreign nations - posting a question like the issue I am describing here will be sure to get you results and tips.

That's actually happened on a new Vonage Forum thread named Vonage-friendly Cable Providers in Norfolk, VA. The thread wasn't started by one of our new Members, but by navydavy2001, who as you may remember was Vonage Forum Member of the Week just last week.

"I'm anticipating a move to the VA Beach, Norfolk area and want to know what are the options for (high-speed Internet) in that area," navydavy 2001 writes. "I think one might be Cox Cable, but I'd like to know others, and how Vonage-friendly they are. If you're in that area using Vonage, please let me know."

"I'm not in VA Beach, but I use Cox in Fairfax County, VA and have had no issues with Vonage," answers Vonage Forum Member turbo53.

How To Reply To A Post

I am guessing that many if not most of you have the Reply process down. But for those Vonage Forum Members who are new, or who have not replied to any posts as of yet, I have a few pointers. 

1. In order to post a reply to a post, you need to be a registered Vonage Forums member and be logged in to the Forum. To start the Registration process, go to the left side of any Vonage Forum page, click on Member Services, and then on Member Registration. The process is quick and confidential.

2.If you are a logged-in Member and want to reply to a specific post, just click the Quote icon at the upper right of the post you want to Reply to. This will open a new page with a Post a Reply box. The box will contain text from the post you are responding to. While you can delete some or all of this text, it is useful to leave it there so that readers on the thread you are responding to can follow the gist of the thread from post to post. 

3. Type your message in the box. When you are done, I recommend clicking SpellCheck. I say this not because I am a great speller, but because I've never won a spelling bee and never will. When people use our search engine or even a search engine like Google to search for a Vonage related subject or problem, and you unintentionally make a spelling error - as we all do, it will be that much harder for the search engine to find your post.

4. After you SpellCheck your post, you can click Preview to read your post before you submit it. Or, if you feel confident in your post, click Submit and it will be added to the thread right away.

5. Finally, I should point out that if you want to get in touch with a previous post writer offline, you can do so by sending a Private Message. To do so, click the PM icon at the bottom center of the post you wish to send a PM (Private Message) to. A Send a Private Message box will open, and the way you compose, check and send that private message involves the same steps as the post rely process I just described in Steps 3 and 4.
