Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's latest statements about fair access to its services over fast broadband lines. Speaking of "fast," we'll read about a road test of a Vonage-sponsored racecar yesterday. We'll also meet Member 23,000 of the Vonage Forum, and read his first post, as well as read a Vonage Voip Forum thread on managing a connection between Vonage, a WRTP54G wireless broadband router and an iMac G5.

Vonage Official Speaks Up For Net Neutrality

At the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Monday afternoon, Vonage government affairs manager Chris Murray urged the group to tackle the "net neutrality" issue.

Currently being debated in the U.S. Congress, net neutrality is the principle that online services that use a lot of bandwidth- such as Vonage - shouldn't be blocked or assessed extra fees by Internet broadband service providers used by consumers to access these services.

During a panel discussion on net neutrality, said it is crucial for NARUC to tackle the issue. He said the difficulties that Vonage has had gaining access to networks demonstrate the urgency of the issue. "This is not a theoretical problem," Murray said.

Andretti Tests Vonage-Sponsored Race Car

That was a Vonage-sponsored car racing at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida yesterday. But there were no other cars on the track, and only a select handful of spectators were in the audience.

That's because 18 year-old Marco Andretti and his dad Michael (son of the famous Mario Andretti) were  out there testing Vonage-sponsored Hondas on a 1.5 mile run.  

After single runs Tuesday morning, Marco and Michael -- in a brand-new orange and black Vonage Honda sporting the No. 1 -- ran together, simulating race conditions. "It's my first feel for running in traffic," Marco told reporters. "You have to get the feel for losing down force and play with that. Nothing at all has surprised me so far. We just have to learn to play in traffic."

Something, I might add, that seems to run in the blood of this storied racing family.


On The Vonage Voip Forum

First, I have some great news. On Tuesday evening, our 23,000th Member joined the Vonage Forum. This Member is fugosushi

What's more I see that fugosushi has already made his first post! It was a follow up to Problem with calling T-mobile cell phones, a thread that was started last month by fellow Vonage Forum Member techscuba.

"Exact same problem here... Calls placed on my Vonage line work great except to T-mobile phones," fugosushi writes in his first post. "The call will ring as usual and just at the point that it would normally go to voicemail, it goes silent. i have "tested" this with 3 different T-mobile lines (i use the word tested loosely because i wouldn't call it testing if everyone i know has T-mobile and I'm just simply trying to leave them a voicemail)."

On a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Unable to Connect with new WRTP54G and iMac G5, new Vonage Forum Member nkoritz details the issue for which he named his thread after.

"Once we plug everything in per Vonage's instructions, we lost our internet connection. Help!," he writes. "Our apartment building is wireless so all we do is plug the iMac into the wall and we have an internet connection. I tried to install the Set-Up Wizard that came with the Router but it doesn't seem to work on our Mac.

Next, nkoritz describes the equipment he is using with his Vonage service, which is:

1. Linksys WRTP54G Wireless-G Broadband Router
2. Westell WireSpeed DSL Modem (do we even need a modem?)
3. Panasonic VE-SV03-S Cordless Phone
4. Apple iMac G5 Computer

Next, he describes how this equipment is configured:

1. WRTP54G is connected to Westell DSL Modem using Blue Cable. Blue Cable is plugged into WRTP54G's Blue port labeled "Internet."

2. WRTP54G is connected to iMac using Yellow Cable. (Once the yellow cable is connected to the iMac we lose our internet connection). Yellow Cable is Plugged into WRTP54G's Yellow Port labeled "Ethernet 1".

3. Telephone is Plugged into WRTP54G's Green port labeled "Phone 1."

Earning his spurs once again as Vonage Forum Member of the Week, NateHoy posts an answer.

"Sounds like you have everything wired up properly, but if your MAC was connected to the DSL modem before, did you have do to anything special to set it up (enter a DSL password into the MAC, for example)?," he asks.

Having asked that question, NateHoy then begins his always very well-informed, but easy-to-understand recommendation:

"The MAC needs to be set up to properly access the WRTP54G, which basically means setting it to automatically obtain an IP address from the WRTP54G and not to use any sort of login service like PPPoE, etc. I don't have any specific instructions because I don't own any MAC machines, sorry. If you currently have PPPoE set up, WRITE DOWN any settings, then set it to obtain an address without authentication," he writes. 

"Once you've got this set up," NateHoy recommends:

1. Power down the MAC and the WRTP54G. Disconnect the WAN/Internet cable on the WRTP54G.
2. Power up the WRTP54G and let the lights settle for a minute.
3. Hook your MAC to one of the LAN ports on the WRTP54G and power it up.
4. Check to make sure the LAN light lights up on the WRTP54G.
5. Go to on the MAC and log into the WRTP54G.
6. IF your MAC was set up for PPPoE, change the connection type to PPPoE on the WRTP54G and enter your PPPoE settings.
7. Power up the DSL modem and wait a minute for it to start up.
8. Connect the DSL modem to the WRTP54G WAN/Internet port.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems 

As you just read, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem----Vonage Adapter--PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."
