Vonage In Print News

October 30, 2003

Coldwater -- The equipment is in and City One Telecommunication is ready to roll out connections for internet telephone service through Vonage Telecommunication, Manager Lindy Cox said Tuesday.

"We already have had a number of calls about the service," he added.

With cable television and internet cable service, "adding a product like this really rounds out our service offerings and provides our customers with more choices for how to spend their hard earned dollars In these tough economic times every penny counts and this could save some people serious pennies," Cox explained.

Coldwater is the first municipality, which has contracted with Vonage for Internet Phone (IP) service.

"We are especially pleased that the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities selected Vonage, when it was reviewing alternatives to break the local telephone company's high-priced monopoly," stated Dan Elwell, national account manager for Vonage. "Vonage and the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities have a tremendous opportunity to offer its area's residents a full-featured, flat rate local and long-distance calling service throughout the U.S. and Canada."

City One Voice, powered by Vonage, will offer two residential and two small business programs, which include all the standard voice service features, such as caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding and call hunt. Additionally, these packages include several proprietary features only available from Vonage, such as online voice mail retrieval, local number portability, area code selection and online account management. Both small business programs include a free dedicated fax line.

Using the latest technology, City One Voice, powered by Vonage, will allow telephone calling over the internet, on the cable broadband service. Cox said the prices range from:
  • Residential Premium Unlimited Plan - $34.99/month for unlimited calling throughout the United States and Canada.
  • Residential Unlimited Local Plan - $24.99/month for unlimited local calling plus 500 minutes of United States long distance and Canadian calling.
  • Small Business Unlimited Plan - $49.99/month for unlimited calling throughout the United States and Canada, including a free dedicated fax line.
  • Small Business Basic Plan - $39.99/month for 1500 minutes of calling throughout the United States and Canada, including a free dedicated fax line.

Services and hardware included at the same price in all Vonage plans, and include: Voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, call hunt, call transfer, call return (*69), caller ID block (*67), repeat dialing, area code selection, international call block, bandwidth saver, web-based account management, voice mail retrieval and real-time inbound/outbound calling activity, as well as international calling at significantly reduced rates.

The company does provide a 911 service, which registers the modem at a location and can notify local emergency system when 911 is dialed. Todd Barrish, a spokesman for Vonage, said a 911 emergency system -- designed to work like the current copper line dial-up system -- is "in the works."

He noted as long as the telephone connection box is at the location where it is registered, 911 can be sent to that location. Barrish did note that once an account is registered, the connection box can be taken to any location where there is broadband service, such as hotels, and calls can be made on the long distance network at Vonage rates.

Vonage is an Edison, N.J.-based company, which provides internet telephone service in more than 100 markets nationwide using broadband connections.
