Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 30, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news,. we’ll read a review of the Linksys PAP2 adapter many Vonage users have working with their Vonage service. We’ll note the addition of some new cities to the Vonage network, as well as mention where the Vonage logo could be found on a fast car this weekend. We’ll  go over an interesting Vonage Voip Forum thread about MAC addresses, as well as another thread from a new Vonage user with some sharp opinions. Finally, this being Monday, we’ll meet our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

British Newspaper Reviews Vonage, PAP2 Adapter

Well-respected British newspaper The Independent is out with their review of the Linksys PAP2 adapter that can be used with the Vonage service.

“The Vonage internet telephony service is not free, but costs £9.99 a month for unlimited calls to landlines in the UK and Ireland. It also works through hardware adaptors that connect regular phones to the broadband link, instead of relying on a PC and software,” the Independent’s Stephen Pritchard writes.

“Vonage offers two hardware options: a router and a phone adaptor, both made by Linksys,” Pritchard explains. “The adaptor, the PAP2, is offered free to Vonage subscribers and is a good option for anyone who can't, or would rather not, change their broadband router. As long as your existing hardware has a spare Ethernet socket, it is simply a matter of plugging in the PAP2, plugging in an analogue handset and waiting a few minutes for the device to connect to the Vonage network.”

“The process is simple and quick and there is no need to use a computer,” he adds. “It is possible to set up the PAP2's more advanced features through the phone handset and a voice- response menu. Most users will not even need to do this, however, as the PAP2 works fine out of the box.”

Pritchard then adds his thoughts that “the PAP2 offers a good way to add additional phone lines in an office or at home. Each device can handle two lines, or support phone and fax.”

Vonage Team Competes In Rolex 24

In The Rolex24  race in Daytona Beach this weekend, the /Vonage/Pacific Coast Motorsports Pontiac Riley was an early front-runner with drivers Ryan Dalziel, Alex Figge, Jon Fogarty and David Empringham—who led one lap—before a myriad of technical issues removed the car from contention. Driving number 89, the Vonage co-sponsored team wound up 23rd in the Daytona Prototype class and 44th overall.

Vonage Adds Several Oregon Cities

Businesses and residents in the central Oregon cities of Bend, Hood River, Prineville, Redmond and Dalles are now able to sign up for Vonage. in the state of Oregon will be able to sign up for Vonage's VoIP-based calling services.

"We're giving consumers in the Central Oregon region broadband telephone service plans they cannot get from their local or long distance phone companies, which include unlimited calling throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, plus all of the traditional service plan features, as well as many proprietary features unique to Vonage at a great price, without confusing bills and surprising charges,” says Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread called How long does a MAC address activation take? finds new Vonage Forum Member nrenken asking about the process.

“Yesterday I signed up via phone for Vonage. Because of a better deal, I bought the Phone Adapter (Linksys WRTP54G) at Circuit City. Today morning I called customer service to provide them the new MAC-Address and also the S/N from my Voip Router,” writes nrenken, whose first name is Niels.

“Since I did the highly recommended FW Update from 1.00.20 to 1.00.37 (see at Linksys technical support AnswerID 2607 "Linksys WRTP54G Required Firmware Upgrade for Vonage") and a powercycle the router itself updated automatically to 1.00.60 and the Voip Status (Router MMenu-> Status - "Voice" Tab) changed from Provisioning Status: Provisioning failed to Provisioning Status: Provisioning succeeded,” he writes. But then he adds that when he connects his Panasonic 2.4 GHz cordless phone to the “Phone 1” port he still gets the message that his phone could be connected to the wrong phone port, and he should try connecting his phone to the other port.

As part of his message, Niels notes that he is advised that if the issue still persists he should check his Account status online.

He’s done so, and his account status is active.

But at this point, he is still confused. He asks if Provisioning Status: Provisioning succeeded" actually means that Vonage has updated the MAC Address in their system?

“When should my phone line work?,” he asks.

Niels then comes back and posts that he contacted Vonage and the new MAC address would be available in about a day.

Occasionally, we get posts from new Vonage Forum Members who are new to Vonage but are delighted with the service thus far. Such a post was made over the weekend by skoone01, who opened a thread called Very HAPPY Customer!

“Like so many, I get tired and worn out from all the griping as well as the constant negative comments about Vonage service.. Well...... I'm here to make a POSITIVE comment,” he writes. “I have been with Vonage since August, and so far I have had only ONE conversation that went all broken up. My party hung up, I called back and all was well. Just ONE incident, people! No caller ID problems, no voice quality problems, NO problems period! The service is always there, people on the other end are amazed that I'm talking over the internet, which in turn gets them interested in finding out more about the technology.

“From the suggestions of other fine members of this message community, I went out and bought a Uniden 8860 cordless phone and now I'm even happier than before,” adds skoone01, whose first name is Steve. “I use a PAP2 which I have taken on trips and used on the road with great success. I simply do not understand why so many people cannot find satisfaction with Voip as I have experienced it over the past few months in many different environments with virtually no issues whatsoever. No, I haven't dealt with their customer service department yet, but the service has been so reliable I haven't had a need to call them!! That's the way it's supposed to be, agreed?

“Good going Vonage, you guys rock,” skoone01 says. “And thanks to all of you guys here on this message board who have been very helpful and PATIENT to offer tips and ideas for the rest of us. I usually keep quiet (my first post in fact) but this time I felt it was time to speak up. I am proud to be a Vonage subscriber and plan to stick with it for the foreseeable future.

You’re very welcome, Steve. Glad you are here with us.

Now, it is time to talk about another Steve. That would be Steve48, our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week. Steve48 has won the award before, but I noted that he was quite active on the Forum this week, taking lots of time out to give his expert, free advice to several of his fellow Forum Members. Good on you, Steve. If you want to read through some of Steve48’s posts, click here.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

We've Been Making Some Changes

I want to take this opportunity to catch you up on some changes we are making around here.

As you all know, this site is not an official Vonage® site.

Over the past three years I have enjoyed a somewhat informal relationship with Vonage regarding this site.

Now that Vonage has become the powerhouse entity that it has, it is time for some changes on this site to help further distinguish from Vonage Holdings and to clearly establish for what it is:

"This Site is exclusively owned and operated by 4Sight Media LLC and is no way endorsed, sponsored, provided, owned or otherwise controlled by Vonage. For official information on Vonage Services please proceed to the Vonage website at"

You may have recently noticed some minor changes on this site; a new logo that specifically states "an independent support site" and a few other things. Over the course of the next few days you will begin to see other changes, most all cosmetic.

More specifically, you may notice the removal of all Vonage logos and trademarks including those used in the forums for member rankings.

This is being done rightfully so to respect and to protect the value of the Vonage trademarks.

I tell you this so you can understand why parts of this site are changing and also as a friendly reminder that at the end of the day, the focus of the content of this site will remain "Vonage".

But most importantly that you remember:

" is not an official Vonage® website & is independently operated."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week feature!
