Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll tell you about a billing error Vonage quickly corrected, and about some technical Voip tests a leading testing service has just performed and where Vonage rated very high. We'll also examine two new Vonage Forum threads that both discuss multiple phone lines.

Vonage Quickly Corrects Billing Error

Widespread Vonage-related service issues happen so infrequently, it is news when they do happen. So that you know that Vonage is aware of the problem and is working hard to fix it, that's why we offer a Vonage Service Status alert box on the left side of our home page.

Yesterday, for example you might have seen a notice that said that some customers that were billed on January 25 may have been charged twice for this month's invoice. Vonage noted that their engineers were busy addressing the issue and the extra charge will be refunded to the affected customers' credit card by the end of the day.

Well, the matter seems to be corrected. While you were asleep, Vonage quickly swung into action and fixed it. That's why the alert is gone from the Vonage Service Status box. That's pretty darn efficient in my book. Now if all banks, airlines, retailers and so forth were that quick in terms of reversing accidental double-billing!

Vonage Comes Out Very Well In System Tech Tests

Every six months, a technology testing firm called Keynote Systems launches thousands of VoIP calls to and from several cities. Their goal is to test how well some 16 Voip service providers, including Vonage, perform.

This isn't a poll or popularity contest, but a series of scientific measurements. And Vonage finished a very high second place in the two most important of these tests. These are Service Availability by Voip Service Provider and Average Mean Opinion Score By Voip Service Provider.

The Service Availability factor represents the percentage of call attempts that are successful. Each call attempt includes up to three dial attempts. An unsuccessful call is one in which no connection to the called number can be established. Unsuccessful calls can be the result of standard phone system errors such as no dial tone, no ringing, ring no answer, or busy signal. Voip service calls can also fail when service is rejected for account problems.

Now the Average Mean Opinion Score has nothing to do with human "opinions," "mean" or otherwise. Instead it has all to do with a testing procedure that is probably best understood by engineers and statisticians. But as Keynote Systems explains it:

A Mean Opinion Score (MOS) measures the voice audio quality of a phone call on a scale of 1 to 5. Traditionally, this score was derived from a sample of subjective human opinion scores. Today, an algorithm, ITU Standard P.862, known as PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) replaces the human panel and scores call audio by comparing a digital test audio file sent over a phone call with a reference copy of the same digital test audio file to see how much the audio degrades over the phone call. Comparing the two audio files, the PESQ algorithm can determine a MOS score for the call that has a very high correlation with human perception. The Average MOS for a Voip service provider is an indication of the audio quality that each service provider delivers to end-users.

Like I said, that MOS involves a procedure and an explanation that is best understood by statisticians and engineers. But guess what. We actually have some engineers who are Vonage Forum Members. But our Member engineers often are the ones giving both new and experienced non-engineer Vonage users valuable advice. So I'm thinking, let's go over there now and see what you members- non-engineers and engineers alike – are talking about.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member jonwiley is so pleased with his Vonage service, he would like to add a second Vonage line. But he's had some questions about the procedure. That's why he's started a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Multiple Phone Lines??

"I recently signed up for Vonage and I am so far pleased with the service," jonwiley writes. "I am considering adding a second personal line and moving my business line over.

"What do I need to do?," he asks. "What about the "Motorola VoIP Adapter for Vonage Service"? Can it be connected to my current Router? "

He then ends the post by naming his current router and broadband service provider.

As he so often does, Steve48 answers with some helpful advice.

"All you should need to do is call Vonage or access the web site and order the additional lines. It would be a good idea to check your bandwidths up and down and make sure that your Internet service can handle the load," he writes.

"You should be able to plug new adapters into the WRTP54G. However, you might want to consider getting a good router and using it to run the whole show," Steve48 points out, adding his recommendation that jonwiley stick with the RTP300 for the new service rather than the Motorola.

On a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread named How many phones can be attached off of one RTP300? , Vonage Forum Member sanannbass writes that he 2 Vonage Lines using an RTP300. "I have four two line phones and 2 single line phone using a punchdown in a closet to connect the phones in a star configuration," sanannbass explains, then asking if anyone else out there have a similar setup where they are using multiple 2 line phones on one adapter?

"I installed the RTP300 at the beginning of November and service has been fantastic. But lately, I will speak to someone and my voice will be clear but their voice sometimes is garbled," he adds. "Also, the volume of the calls sometimes is a lot lower than usual."

Well, wouldn't you know it, but here comes Steve48 again.

"If you haven't tried recycling power and then re-powering in the correct order, you should do that first. If that doesn't fix it, post the technical details listed in the sticky at the top of the Forum.

"I don't have multiple two-line phones, but each port on the RTP300 should be capable of handling several phones, depending on the type of phone. People typically talk about 5 as being a reasonable limit."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

We've Been Making Some Changes
