Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Before we get to today's usual diet of important news and helpful threads, I wanted to bring you up to speed on some changes we are making.

As you all know, this site is not an official Vonage® site.
Over the past three years I have enjoyed a somewhat informal relationship with Vonage regarding this site.
Now that Vonage has become the powerhouse entity that it has, it is time for some changes on this site to help further distinguish vonage-forum.com from Vonage Holdings and to clearly establish vonage-forum.com for what it is:

"This Site is exclusively owned and operated by 4Sight Media LLC and is no way endorsed, sponsored, provided, owned or otherwise controlled by Vonage. For official information on Vonage Services please proceed to the Vonage website at www.Vonage.com."

You may have recently noticed some minor changes on this site; a new logo that specifically states "an independent support site" and a few other things. Over the course of the next few days you will begin to see other changes, most all cosmetic.
More specifically, you may notice the removal of all Vonage logos and trademarks including those used in the forums for member rankings.
This is being done rightfully so to respect and to protect the value of the Vonage trademarks.

I tell you this so you can understand why parts of this site are changing and also as a friendly reminder that at the end of the day, the focus of the content of this site will remain "Vonage".
But most importantly that you remember:

"www.vonage-forum.com is not an official Vonage® website & is independently operated."

Now, let us get to today's Digest.

In the news, we'll tell you about one state that wants to tax Vonage users. We'll also examine new Vonage Forum threads on changing your Vonage number right after you sign up, and alternatives if you want someone you know overseas to use Vonage Softphone.



In The News

Virginia Wants To Tax Vonage Users

A bill that would tax satellite television subscribers and Internet telephone customers in Virginia for the first time is on its way to a vote in the House of Delegates.

The House Finance Committee advanced the bill Monday on a bipartisan 14-to-7 vote.

Delegate Sam Nixon's bill would simplify a patchwork of state and local taxes and fees now attached to local and long-distance telephone, cellular and cable bills into one tax of five percent.

The state would collect the entire tax and rebate the local share equal to the amounts cities and counties now receive.

But for the first time, the bill applies the tax to people who subscribe to Voip services such as Vonage.

On a new thread entitled changing number after just signing up?,new Vonage Forum Member thecowgirl ropes readers in with an interesting post describing the reasons she wanted to change her assigned Vonage number.

“There was not a number available in our local area (nor anywhere close, within 100 miles or so), so my husband chose a number in our area code,” she writes. “I found out later that we could have chosen another number/area code (say one that is located in a big city in our state), so it would be free for family in that area to call our number (local call). We went into Vonage to try to change it, and best I can tell, there would now be a $9.99 fee PLUS an activation fee of $29.99. And maybe even some other charges I missed?”

Then, we have Vonage Forum Member trekologer beaming in with a helpful and accurate answer.

“There is a $9.99 (plus tax) charge to change your number. Since you are not activating another line, there isn't the $29.99 line activation fee,” he writes.

Trekologer then explains the charge for doing this, which is:

New Number Activation Charge $9.99

Sales Tax $0.60 (if you're in NJ)

FET Tax $0.30

Total Amount $10.89 (if you're in NJ)

Total Amount $10.29 (if you're not in NJ)

And then I wrote that “since you just opened your account and made an error, most all CS Reps will be understanding to your situation. You might PM one of the many reps on this site, I am sure they would help you out.

A new Vonage Forum Member named Pirate2600 was wondering about Vonage Softphone as an alternative for his girlfriend, who lives overseas. So he's raised his pirate flag on a new thread he's begun on the subject called VOIP phone, Softphone alternative.

He writes:

“I've read thru the forums the past couple of days, and I think I understand the Softphone provisioning, but still have a question or two. My gf is in another country. She has DSL, albeit not great reliability. I think she can use the soft phone on her PC, and call my # with unlimited calls, or 500 minutes . . .”

Then Pirate 2600 gets to his question, asking if there a phone alternative to this softphone? “If she buys a Voip phone, and calls my # or IP address straight from a router and not using the PC at all, will this work for free?I would appreciate some advice from the Vonage gurus to clarify the best way to get calls from her simply the setup. “

Well we have plenty of “Vonage gurus” here. One of them is Vonage Forum Member Steve48.

“Vonage doesn't sell to people in other countries, but if she buys a Vonage phone here in the US using a US credit card, and if she takes it to her country, and if it works with her Internet service, then calls to you will be free,” he writes.

Then VonageForum Member Pepperoni adds his own thoughts into the mix.

(Vonage) “Softphone works well wirelessly. You could sign up and merely give her the password info. The downside would be that the controls would be on your dashboard, and all the call records would be accessed only by use of your main account password,” he writes, noting the phone should work if it handles password logon.

“Your friends outgoing minutes are counted, but incoming is free,” he then points out. “Merely get in the habit of calling them, even if you need to hang up their call and return it as incoming.”

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum1.html.

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."
