Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 23, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 23, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll describe one expert's prediction that companies like Vonage will be the standard bearer for VoIP- and the older phone companies will have to scramble in order to catch up. We'll also point you to an interesting Vonage Forum thread about a mysterious slowdown of Internet connection speed, as well as a thread from a reader wanting the lowdown on QoS settings for the equipment he is using for his Vonage service. Finally, this being Monday, we will introduce you to our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Expert Says Vonage Will Make The Internet Phone Sector *The* Phone Industry

It's not that the Internet-phone sector has the potential to be a player in the telecommunications industry. "It will become the phone industry," says James Gattuso, a telecom analyst with the Washington, D.C.,-based Heritage Foundation. In an interview with the Augusta, Maine Free Press, Gattuso says that  companies like Vonage are transforming the way we communicate with each other over short and long distances - to the point that even traditional landline phone companies are seeing the writing on the wall and taking the steps to make the shift over to digital technologies.

The Free Press' Chris Graham writes that obvious advantage to going the Internet-phone route is price. Monthly phone plans offering unlimited local and long-distance calls starting at less than $30 per month are common across the industry.

"This is why the Internet-phone industry is probably going to replace entirely what we might call loosely the analog method of phone calls over a period of years," Gattuso told the Augusta Free Press.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Manu has been having some Internet connection speed issues of late. He was curious about what might be causing the problem, so he's opened a new Vonage Forum thread that he's titled Internet connection speed becomes slow and gradually lost.

"I have Comcast cable Internet (2 MBPS) and Vonage Voip connection. I am using Motorola VT 1000V series. From past 3-4 days I am facing this strange problem," he writes. My Internet (connection) becomes very slow and gradually is lost."

Manu says that when this happens, his phone still works. At this point I he unplugs the voice terminal and then switches it back on to get an optimum connection. Manu says he thought the problem was with directly related to his Internet connectivity, but now he's not so sure. Why?

"Because when I connect directly to (my) cable modem my Internet works great," he writes. "So I am not able to figure out what else is the problem. Can anybody help please?"

Steve48 hears Manu's call for help and posts a response.

"The fact that connecting directly to the modem solves your connectivity problem, and the fact that you get good connectivity with the Vonage adapter for awhile after re-cycling it is pretty conclusive. You probably have an adapter that's going bad," Steve48 writes.

"Heating is one possible issue," he adds, then asking Manu if he can you set up the adapter in a location where it will run cooler?

Manu then posts that "heating might not bean issue, because I do not use (a) heater here and the room temperature is 40F here in NJ. One more thing I did not mention (I thought it is not significant)," he adds, "is that I am using Azureus torrent client. Now i am thinking that might be one of the reason why this might be happening."

Steve48 posts back, that could definitely be an issue. He suggests to Manu that he run a forum search on the topic, "paying particular attention to what NateHoy has to say about such things. If this is your problem, the solution is probably to put a good router in your system and run the Motorola adapter off that."

Speaking of NateHoy, he adds his valuable advice to a thread new Vonage Forum Member eggyacid has started called Help with WRTP54G and QOS setting.

The thread begins with eggyacid writing  that he just got Vonage with Linksys WRTP54G Vonage built in router. He writes that domestic call quality is alright, but international call quality leaves something to be desired.  "I  heard there is a QOS (Quality of Service) setting I can change but can't find information on it," he writes, adding that although he's found the setting in the router he needs to assign priority to the port. "Since my Vonage is built in, which port do I use?," he asks.

Here's where NateHoy jumps in, answering with the kind of insight you only get on the Vonage Forums.

"QoS in the WRTP54G automatically gives top priority to the Voice ports, when it works. Unfortunately, without any apparent way to determine the upstream bandwidth available, the QoS is spotty on the WRTP54G," he points out. " I put another router in front of the WRTP54G, and I now have working QoS."

NateHoy then links to an article he's written about QoS that he's posted on the Vonage Forum. The article, entitled Implementing QoS, can be found at

It's Monday, and time to meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week. Over the last few weeks, I've been noticing some very knowledgeable and helpful posts from blakadher. From Vancouver, Washington, blakadher has only been a Member here for exactly one month as of today, but he already has made his presence very well known with more than 125 posts giving answers to issues ranging from voice mail issues to call quality. So for his hard work, as well as enthusiastic help he has given  from the moment he became a Vonage Forum Member, we name blakadher our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. If you want to read some of blakadher's posts, click this link.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest, !!
