Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll tell you about a big assignment from a major Vonage partner, and note what Vonage's venture capital funding rounds say about the company. We'll also point you to Vonage Forum threads about how to solve the problem of lower phone volume when someone picks up a Vonage extension, and an example of a thread we often see here where a prospective Vonage user is asking other Forum Members about what they think about the quality of Vonage calling in their region. We'll also point you to a "sticky" thread that tells you what information you should provide when you start a thread describing a problem you may be having with your Vonage connection.

Vonage Phone Chip Supplier Presses Forward

Texas Instruments, whose chipset technology is being used in the Vonage-compatible Uniden UIP1869V phone announced earlier this month, has just announced PIQUA, a new system of Internet Protocol (IP) quality management which will equip Voip services with quality management tools to detect and analyze bugs. I don't yet know if Vonage will use the service, but the big hoopla surrounding this announcement proves that as with the Texas Instruments-powered Uniden phone, Vonage picks some innovative partners.

Vonage Cited As An Example of An "Established," VC-Funded Company

Red Herring, a magazine that covers high tech business deals, reports today that Vonage's $200 million raised in its fifth financing round last year was the largest venture capital funded deal of the year. "Today’s (venture capital) money chases older, more-established companies with real cash flows, rather than pie in the sky projections," Red Herring writes. "Silicon Valley has evolved."

And so has Vonage, now with some 1.2 million subscribers. And I know that many new Vonage subscribers- as well as those who have been with Vonage for awhile, join our Vonage Forum and post threads there. So speaking of...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member MrKenmore finds that his Vonage line works fine - but when someone else picks up his Vonage phone extension at home to join the conversation, the phone volume gets appreciably lower. So MrKenmore sought solutions to this problem by starting a thread that he's called, Low volume on second picked up phone....need insight. 

Well, MrKenmore, when it comes to "insight" about Vonage, you cannot get any more insight than when you get responses from knowledgeable Vonage Forum Members such as Steve48 and scerruti (a former, and our current, Vonage Forum Member of the Week).

"Are phones 1 and 2 specific phones in your house, or does this problem occur no matter which phone in the house is picked up first and another second?," Steve48 asks. "Assuming the former, how is phone 2 when it's used by itself? In either case, is the call quality at phone 1 affected when phone 2 is picked up?"

And then scerruti posts some troubleshooting tips.

Troubleshooting tips:

"You need to determine whether the cause is one of your phones, a segment of wiring, all of the wiring or the adapter," scerruti writes. "I would start by putting a splitter on the adapter and connecting both phones directly. If the problem exists you can rule out the house wiring (I suspect the problem is with your wiring).

"If the problem exists then borrow a third phone and swap it out with your two phones to determine if one of the phones is the problem," he adds. "If not then the problem is with the adapter, call Vonage and get a replacement."

Then, scerruti recommends that if the problem MrKenmore is having is with one of the phones, he should return it to the store for a replacement.

But what if he is not having a problem with the adapters or the phones?

"So, since we have eliminated the phones and the adapters as the source of the problem we know it is a wiring problem," scerruti advises. "Disconnect all but two legs of CAT5 and test for the problem. If it still exists disconnect one leg and reconnect a different leg." 

Scerruti adds that if the problem goes away then the problem was with the leg that he (MrKenmore) just disconnected. "Proceed in this manner until you have identified wiring problems in one or more of your runs, "scerruti adds.  "Then start adding the runs back in one at a time until all the 'good' runs are connected.

Sometimes here on the Vonage Forum, we get locally specific threads from users who are thinking of trying Vonage and want to know from current users about the quality of Vonage service in that region, state, or city. 

I just read one new Vonage Forum thread that fit this description. It is called Potential New Customer in Dayton, OH - using Roadrunner, and it has been started by new Vonage Forum Member Bguthrie.

I am considering using Vonage," writes Bguthrie, whose first name is "Ben." He writes that he is interested in hearing experiences from Vonage users in the Dayton, Ohio area.

"I'm not in Dayton, however, am in Ohio - Elyria to be specific," replies Vonage Forum Member bmetelsky. "I have Comcast as my cable and internet service provider. I have been using Vonage since October, 2004 with great success. I highly recommend the service to my friends."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum1.html.

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."
