Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I have some interesting news. On Saturday, we recorded our 60,000th post since we started the Vonage Forum back in March, 2003. Since we only reached 50,000 in late October, 2005, that means that you've made 10,000 posts in the last 2 1/2 months. I think that's great. Keep those posts coming!

As you may have noticed, we've changed our signage a bit. I wanted to make sure that each and every one of you Members and site visitors- and there are many more of you these days- was clear that the Vonage Forum is an independent support site, not part of Vonage. Our new logo reflects that.

In the news, we'll tell you about Vonage's latest market-leading market share among Voip providers. We'll also point you to Vonage Forum threads in which two of our expert Vonage Forum members authoritatively answer a new Member's concerns, and another thread that points to some articles written by another one of our Members about Vonage-related technical issues that frequently come up as new Vonage Forum Threads and post. And this being Monday, and speaking of helpful Vonage Forum Members - we'll introduce you to our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage Is North America's Voip Service By Subscriber Count

According to Infonetics Research, Vonage is the largest Voip service in North America by market share. In the quarter ended June 30, 2005 (the most recent statistics available), Vonage had 32 percent of the overall Voip market. The runner-up (one of the large broadband cable ISPs that also offers Voip service) was at 25 percent. Also, the survey found that 93 percent of North American VoIP service subscribers are in the United States, while seven percent are in Canada. That means the U.S.- which has approximately nine times Canada's population (297 million compared to around 32.7 million) but 13 times as many Voip users) is a bit ahead of Canada's Voip subscribers on a proportional basis. 

The survey did not measure those brands that are softphone only, and do not offer a complete package of calling features that Vonage does.

Yet instead of keeping his knowledge close to the vest, he's actually started to post some articles drawing from this knowledge on the Vonage Forum. New Vonage Forum Member A2T writes that he is about ready to sign up for Vonage service, but he'd feel better doing so once he gets answers to some issues that concern him a bit going in. He's expressed his concerns in a new thread that he decided to name, Soon to Be New User..But I Have Concerns...Help Convince Me.

Here are the things A2T (whose real first name is Paul) wanted some answers to when he started the thread, along with answers supplied by some Vonage Forum Members.

A2T writes: "1. My wife runs a business out of our house. We absolutely cannot afford to loose our current home phone number for even a week, let alone a month or so. Vonage says they can transfer the existing number, but that will take months. What will happen in the interim when a client calls our pre-Vonage home number? Will they get a number disconnected error message or something? Is there a way to inform callers to the pre-Vonage # of the temporary virtual # ? Vonage told me they will keep the existing service active while the number is being transferred to Vonage, but I'm skeptical. This would be a show stopper, don't even bother answering following questions if so."

Vonage Forum Member reebok writes: "while your number is being ported, your setup works exactly the same. Vonage only comes into play after the number is ported. in the interim, the virtual number is provided so you can use the Vonage service right away if you want to. if another Vonage user were to call your number being ported, it would ring the Vonage line (since it never leaves the Vonage system, it doesn't know Vonage doesn't actually own that number yet) it is possible when the port is actually happening that callers may get a 'number disconnected' type message. for me this lasted 3 hours or so. The (Local Number Portability Forum) has more info I'm sure," he writes.

Now let's pick up with the rest of this thread:

A2T writes: 2. We have 3 phones on 3 levels in our house. Can we still use all the phone jacks in our house somehow, or must I run new wiring? This would be show stopper #2."

Vonage Forum Member navydavy2001 answers: "Yes, you can absolutely use house wiring. Very simple. Just disconnect from your landline (Verizon) and connect it to Vonage."

A2T writes: "3. We have an alarm which calls out through phone lines to a monitoring station. How will this work using the Vonage system? How will they know our address to send police/fire to?"

Navydavy2001 answers: "There is a forum here that addresses alarm concerns," he says. (Note: navydavy is talking about the fax, TiVo and Alarms Forum which you can find here-Dan). "I understand there is much success with making it work, however, your specific setup might require you to do some configuration changes. Not impossible."

A2T writes: "4. Our Comcast cable modem seems to go up and down at a whim. It requires me to unplug the cable modem and wireless router to reset it. Comcast says its because of "momentary lapses in the signal". I have another name for it. Anyway, if the cable modem goes down, and nobody resets it for a few days, what happens to the calls going to our home #? Can they still leave Vonage voicemail messages?"

Navydavy2001 answers: "If you lose connection, your customers can still leave a voicemail. You will get a notification of the voicemail in your email box, which may or may not include a .wav file of the message. You can also set up a forwarding number, so if the network is down and someone calls in, it will go to the alternate number (ex. cell phone)."
