Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 11, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As you may have noticed, we've changed our signage a bit. I wanted to make sure that each and every one of you Members and site visitors- and there are many more of you these days- was clear that the Vonage Forum is an independent support site, not part of Vonage. Our new logo reflects that.

In the news, we'll read about what should be no surprise to you- where Vonage placed in the weekly count of the number of times their ads have been seen on websites (not including Vonage's own site). We'll also point you to Vonage VoIP Forum threads about adapters, call forwarding, and a (pun intended) "light-hearted" thread about, well, lights!

In The News

Vonage Makes An "Impression"- Lots of Them, Actually

Each week, the market research firm Nielsen/NetRatings publishes an AdRelevance survey that ranks the leading Internet advertisers by something called "impressions." The term means individual times that an online ad is presented to a site visitor. For example, if you happen to notice a Vonage banner ad on a website you're reading thru, that's one "impression."

In the week ending January 1, Vonage was far and away the leading advertiser on the Internet with some 3.461 billion impressions. That's more than three times the runner-up, which was General Motors.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member bcooper had been having trouble with his RT31P2 router. So he decided to start a Vonage Forum thread which he named, Trouble w/ RT31P2:Will new adapter fix various problems?

"I've had Vonage as my primary number since October of '05, but I've used the service since October of '04," he writes, adding that he wonders if the calling troubles he's had of late could be fixed if he got a new phone adapter.

He lists his calling problems as an inability for incoming callers to hear him, Caller ID gives the number only, voice mail isn't quite up to par, outgoing call attempts sometimes give a fast busy but go thru on the next try, and three-way calling doesn't connect all parties.

"Usually rebooting the RT31P2 will make it more reliable for a few days. It looks like I can get a PAP2 for $35 after rebate at Circuit City," he writes. "Would this be a good choice?"

Before finishing his post, bcooper supplies the detailed results of a test he ran on his Vonage service through

Then, with his 800th post since joining the Vonage Forum only a little more than four months ago, Steve48 posts his conclusions and recommendations after giving bcooper's testyourvoip results a careful read.

"The RT31P2 could be bad, but you have very high packet discards," Steve48 writes, referring to the "0.52, 38.0%" Packet Discards score bcooper cited in his testyourvoip results. "You might want to try eliminating everything except your computer plugged into the modem and re-running the test. If the test results improve dramatically, then the router may very well be the problem. If not, then you may have an ISP problem.

"If you decide on a replacement, keep in mind that the RT31P2 is a router and the PAP2 is not," Steve48 adds. "You'll need a router to use the PAP2."

New Vonage Forum Member lietzyl starts a thread with a title that describes what he is curious about: Call Forwarding Question.

"I have not yet even received my adapter in the mail yet, so I don't even have it actually hooked up yet. I am active though and I have my Vonage telephone number and my account set up online," lietzyl writes. "I have forwarded all of my calls right now to my cell phone until my adapter comes. the number does work because when i call my Vonage number my cell phone rings. i was excited about this.

"My question is if my mom calls me on the Vonage number which is a local call for her and when it gets transferred to my cell phone which is a long distance number for her, does she then pay the long distance charge for the cell phone even though she called me local at first on my Vonage line," lietzyl asks.

Then Vonage Forum Member blakadher posts a response with an answer.

"No, your mom will not be charged for long distance. As far as she is concerned, she is dialing a local number," blakadher explains. "What happens to it after that (i.e., Vonage forwards it) is entirely on the party who is responsible for the number she dialed.

"So, if you have the 500 minutes/month plan then the forwarding of the call counts as an outbound call for you and will come out of the 500 min/month that you have," he adds. "The net effect for your mom is that she is still only making a local call, though."

Lietzyl is appreciative for this info.

"Thank you so much for responding," lietzyl writes. "I hope we love the service and it works good for us. I am so looking forward to it."

Finally, I noticed a pretty "light-hearted" thread. Pun intended. New Vonage Forum Member 02flhrci  started a thread the other day that he named, Any way to dim the lights on the Linksys WRTP54G??

"I know this is a stupid question, and I know I could use electrical tape, but....those blue lights are so bright it drives me craaaazy!!," he writes. "Electrical tape blacks them out too much...anybody have any other brilliant ideas so I can get some sleep at night??"

Well, sleep easy, 02flhrci. Lots of Vonage Forum Members have some clever and constructive suggestions. Plus, this thread is a real fun and entertaining read, and I recommend that all you Members read it and post to it if the mood strikes you!

So What Does All That Voip Alphabet Soup Mean?

Hey, do all those abbreviations you read about in some Vonage Forum threads and elsewhere confuse you? Well, we have a handy guide to all VoIP-related abbreviations you are likely to encounter, and what they stand for. So if you see another jumble of letters that doesn't make any sense, why not hop over to our Voip Acronyms page? You can find it at

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
