Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 5, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 5, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Lots of news today.  We’ll read about a new technology alliance that will help Vonage build up its network. We’ll also learn about a new mail-in rebate Vonage is offering at retail. We’ll also visit Vonage Voip Forum threads about dropped calls, as well as about Vonage and Xbox Live.

In The News

Vonage Teams Up With Sonus

.Vonage has just announced it has incorporated Sonus Network’s infrastructure technology into its network.  The Sonus infrastructure, including central components GSX9000 Open Services Switch, PSX Call Routing Server, SGX Signaling Gateway, and the Sonus Insight Management System, will allow Vonage to accommodate more subscribers by scaling its network.

A pioneer in Voip technology, Sonus’ Open Services Architecture (OSA) supports a variety of carrier applications and enhanced services, enabling the construction of carrier-class next-generation networks.

Analysts are saying that teaming with Sonus will enable Vonage to manage its increasing market and may help Vonage compete against conventional telcos and cable providers.

Vonage has already applied Sonus architecture in New York and Los Angeles, and is working on spreading the technology to its other markets in the United Sates. The company also has plans for establishing the network internationally as well.

Throughout this month, is offering a $100 mail-in-rebate on Vonage-certified Voip phone devices sold in over 9,000 retail locations within the U.S.  The rebate kicks in if you subscribe to the Vonage service – an option that Vonage execs obviously hope wins them lots of new customers.

"We don't do anything that we think is going to lose money," Matthew Deatrick, senior vice president of sales at Vonage, tells  InternetNews.com. . "That is not the intention of the promotion."

Deatrick adds the rebate campaign is a straight promotions move, and that the company hoped for a 20 percent "lift" from the rebate plan.  I guess that means Vonage hopes the plan will account for a 20 percent growth in Vonage’s subscriber base from the current 1.2 million to- let me get out my calculator here- 1.4 million.

Of course when Vonage gets new subscribers, many are likely to join up with our Vonage Forum as well. So speaking of…

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new thread called Dropped calls, new Vonage Forum Member nsayer has some things to say about the subject.

“The one issue that we've had with Vonage is about a third of the calls get dropped in the middle,” nsayer writes.  “We've got the Linksys RT31P2, with version 1.30.01 (voice version 3.1.6LI). “

Next, nsayer points out that “there is no deterioration of the call quality leading up to the drop. Everything's fine, then the line goes dead. The one time we have had an issue other than the drops was a couple days ago we weren't being heard by the other party, but power cycling the router fixed that.

“We've got a 512k/6M DSL line from SBC in Santa Clara, CA. We're not seeing any trouble with Internet connectivity that corresponds in any way to the drops,” nsayer points out, adding that “we don't have too much to complain about other than the drops. We're quite happy with the voice quality, latency, features...”

Then Vonage Forum Member maryjane sees this thread and responds, “had the same issue, Customer Service had me cycle down my modem and router unplug phone line from port 1, put it in port 2 then power up the modem first making sure its fully running ( all lights ) then power up my router. That fixed my problem.”

Like many Vonage Forum Members, jiboo is an Xbox Live player. But lately he has been having problems coordinating his Internet connection and Vonage service while Xbox Live is running. So he starts this thread that he’s named, Vonage keeps dropping internet connection with Xbox Live.

“Since getting Vonage, I’ve had an increasingly more common experience that I keep losing my internet connection while playing Halo2 on Xbox Live. It seems that I am able to play about an hour and then I get repeated problems where my whole network goes down,” he writes.

Jiboo then explains his setup, which is: Motorola SB4200 --> RTP300 router -->(phone, 2 PCs, Xbox)

“After the first disconnect last nite, I disconnected both PCs, so only the phone and Xbox was connected to the router. Then within 15 minutes, I got dropped again,” he adds.  “My router loses connectivity and cannot renew the IP from Comcast after releasing it. That's a strange thing also ... the Linksys RTP300 still thinks its connected when its not and all 4 lights are still lit up on the cable modem.

“The only fix to this is cycling the modem and router ... which is a pain since I play Xbox in my basement and my networking stuff is in my upstairs office,” he writes.

“I was previously using a USR 8054 wireless router and never had this happen to me while playing Xbox Live. Is anyone else experiencing this? I’ve got to pinpoint the problem,” he asks. “I just got an xbox360 and it happens on both the xbox and the 360, so I don't think the issue is with the game console. I'm thinking it's either something Vonage related, Comcast related or cable modem related. Any votes for the cable modem? I've had it 2 years or so and it runs 24/7 365. “

Well, jiboo, speaking of “pain,” current Vonage Forum Member of the Week reebok feels your pain. He’s posted a link to a Vonage and Xbox Live thread that may have the answers that you, jiboo- and other Vonage Forum Members that have been dealing with similar issues- are seeking.
