Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 4, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 4, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to 2006’s first edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Hope everyone had a great Holiday weekend!

In the news, we’ll start off the year with three new Vonage announcements, including a new Voip adapter, availability of the Uniden Vonage Voip phone in two leading national retailers, and the fact that Vonage’s E911 capability is still expanding. We’ll also visit a Vonage Voip Forum thread on how to get the Belkin wireless router to work with Vonage Service.

In The News

Vonage, D-Link Develop Two-Line Voip Adapter

On Tuesday Vonage announced a partnership with networking systems provider D-Link that will result in both companies developing a broadband telephone adaptor configured for Vonage service.

This product will be known as D-Link VTA. It will be a portable, stand-alone adapter that will be capable of supporting two broadband telephone lines. Vonage says the product will enable consumers to engage in conversations through voice applications that are compatible with Vonage service.

“D-Link’s products are well-known for their high performance and reliability,” said Vonage Network senior vice-president of engineering Daniel Smires. “But just as important is the fact that D-Link’s products are known for their market value. We want to offer our customers the convenience of purchasing a low cost, high quality telephone adaptor configured with Vonage’s service. We’re excited to work with a company that shares our emphasis on customer convenience and ease-of-use.”

Vonage says the adapter will be based on Texas Instruments’ TNETV1015 Voip gateway chipset.

Vonage Voip Phone Comes To CompUSA and Fry’s

Vonage has announced that it working with Uniden America Corporation to retail the Uniden UIP1869V. a 5.8 gigahertz digital expandable cordless broadband phone system configured with Vonage service.

Available for $189.99 minus a $50 mail-in rebate after 60 days of service, the phone is now carried at Fry’s Electronics and CompUSA.

The UIP1869V phone base integrates routing features, eliminating the need to purchase a separate router to establish the broadband connection with a PC. The UIP1869V, configured with Vonage service, offers a corded phone and a speakerphone at the base station and includes one accessory handset. The expandable UIP1869V can support up to 10 Uniden 5.8GHz cordless handsets without the need for additional broadband connections. The UIP1869V plugs directly into a customer's broadband connection or existing router, eliminating the need for a stand-alone adapter and telephone. The phone base works with Vonage's Click-2-Call features, which support Outlook's phonebook downloading.

“Vonage is pleased to offer its customers Uniden's broadband enabled cordless phone system, as the company always seeks to offer a variety of hardware choices for its innovative flat-rate, full-featured calling plans," says Matthew Deatrick, senior vice president of sales for Vonage Marketing. "Vonage's service, coupled with the simplicity, great design and retail strength of Uniden's phone system, makes this a strong alliance for two companies who share the same customer service vision of quality and ease of use."

Vonage Provides E911 In Over 1700 Calling Centers

Vonage has announced that it now has emergency 911 services in over 1700 PSAPs across the country. In just one week, Vonage equipped an additional 112 calling centers, in over 50 new counties, with 911 calling capabilities.

In June, the FCC gave Vonage, and all Internet-based phone service companies, 120 days to create an E911 system from scratch, and provide all of its customers, wherever they are in the U.S., with E911 service. In that amount of time, Vonage worked closely with local 911 centers, also known as Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), across the country to turn on E911 for as many customers as it could.

"Vonage has been continuing to quickly roll-out Enhanced 911 service every day to new counties across the U.S.," says Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron. "Our goal is to get every single Vonage customer help when they need it, and we will continue working with the FCC, regulators, Congress and public safety until there is equal access to E911 for Vonage customers."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new thread called Vonage and Belkin Wireless Router, new Vonage Forum Member BBoogie writes that he is “using a Belkin f5d7230-4 wireless router to access the internet, but however my Vonage does not seem to work with it. Everything else works perfectly, i.e., file sharing and internet...”

Two veteran Vonage Forum Members respond with helpful advice:

“Please start by giving us the information listed here: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic7191.html ,” writes Steve48.  “Include the cabling of your equipment and the things you've tried so far. Does the Vonage adapter work if you leave the Belkin out? “

Then Vonage Forum Member akula comes on with some specific suggestions.

“I have the same model router,” he writes.  “It works fine. Some things to try:

1) If you are using MAC address filtering, ensure that the MAC of your telephone adapter is listed in the table. This router filters both wireless and wired connections, not just wireless.

2) Set your TA for a static IP address. The procedure for this will vary. Ensure that it is outside the DHCP range (I keep the .100-.200 range for DHCP, and assign statics in the .9x range).

3) Under the "Virtual Servers" section, enable a UDP port forward of ports 5060-5061.

“That is what I did with my Linksys PAP2,” he adds.  “I have had no further trouble.”

Here's an Easy Voip Primer For You
