Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. First, I have some very exciting news. On Sunday, about 8:35 p.m. Eastern Time, our 20,000th Member joined the Vonage Forum. That's 20,000 Members since we started here in March, 2003.

And guess what. Appropriately enough, our 20,000th Member's online name is VoIP_mike. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, VoIP_mike! We look forward to reading your posts. 

Now, though, it is time for us to remember why we are all here: to catch up on the latest Vonage-related news, and see what you Vonage Voip Forum Members have been talking about. In the news, we'll catch up on some big Vonage news. We'll also point you to a couple of Vonage VoIP Forum threads about voice mail and dialtone issues Vonage Forum Members have been experiencing. 



In The News

Vonage Gets Additional Financing

The Wall Street Journal says that today (Monday), Vonage will announce it has acquired an additional $250 million dollars in funding. The newspaper says this increases the private funding received by Vonage to $658 million. It is probably going to be the last round of private funding - from venture capitalists, hedge funds and so forth- before Vonage announces an Initial Public Offering in which they will offer their stock to the public.

"This latest round of funding really validates what we are doing," Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron told the Journal. The Journal says that Citron also pointed out that Vonage will use some of this money to complete expansions and to continue the rollout of full-service 911 emergency calling to all customers.

Effect Of Vonage Wi-Fi Phone Analyzed

A publication called World Market Analysis is out with a detailed article that not only reviews the new Vonage UTStarcom F1000 Wi-Fi Voip phone, but gives their assessment about what this new product means for Vonage's services, and the company itself.

First comes the explanation:

"Vonage has staked its claim in the emergent VoWLAN (voice over wireless LAN) space with a handset manufactured by UTStarcom that enables Voip calls over Wi-Fi networks. The new terminal closely resembles a traditional cellular handset and allows end-users to access the firm's Voip service from 'hotspots' in coffee shops, airport lounges and hotels," World Market Analysis well, analyzes. 

World Market Analysis notes that UTStarcom executive vice president Louis Holder has said that 'we asked UTStarcom] if they could build us a Wi-Fi phone with cellphone form factor', while highlighting the new offering's cost advantages 'as a cheaper alternative to the office phone'. 

"The new device, which operates via 802.11b wireless networks, conducts both local and long-distance calls in the United States and Canada," the publication writes. "A range of calling plans will be available - starting at US$14.99 for 500 minutes - and the F1000 supports existing Vonage features such as three-way calling, call waiting, caller ID, voicemail and a phone book with space for up to 200 entries. 

"The F1000 retails for US $129.99 with a Vonage service plan - at present, a US$50 rebate is being offered," World Market Analysis adds.

World Market Analysis summarizes the impact of this phone as follows:

"Significance: Vonage has announced the launch of new handset - the F1000 - that offers internet telephony over wireless local area networks.

"Implications: The U.S. Voip pioneer sees its VoWLAN offering stealing mobile minutes in the enterprise space while hastening the decline of traditional telephony in Wi-Fi-enabled homes.

Outlook: VoWLAN has the potential to offer a strong value-add in terms of price; however, prospective cellular/Wi-Fi dual-mode services can leverage better-established cellular networks and count on the support of leading carriers and vendors worldwide.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Earlier in the Digest, I noted that on Sunday, the Vonage Forum registered our 20,000th Member. I even took a screen capture of the moment VoIP_mike signed up, giving us 20,000. Here it is:

But getting our 20,000th Member was only one of two big milestones we surpassed this weekend. Over the weekend, we got our 10,000th thread!

Turns out that our 10,000th thread is one that is worth focusing on here in the Digest. The thread was started by Vonage Forum Member Mr_Sorento, who named this thread Voice Mail Light doesn't go out.

"Whenever I get a new voicemail message, my voice mail light flashes letting me know. I call up my voicemail, listen to the message, save or delete it, and then hang up," Mr_Sorento writes. "The voice mail light doesn't go out, even after several minutes. 

"However, if I call voice mail back up and listen to the message again or don't do anything and just exit out of voice mail, he adds, "then the light will go out a few minutes later."

Vonage Forum Member KDWycha then posts his experiences with this issue. 

"I have had the problem many times in the past. I make sure that EVERY time I listen to messages I press * to exit the voice mail system," he writes. "You shouldn't have to call back, just listen, delete, save and exit the system by pressing * and your light will go out 99.5% of the time."

Then, Vonage Forum Member projectpete "projects" his opinion.

"Sometimes when there are messages left in the deleted folder the light and beep tones stay on," he writes. Pete advises to "make sure all voicemails are deleted even from the deleted folder.

Then Mr_Sorento comes back with a follow-up post.

"Ahhhh, now you may be onto something," he writes, referring to what projectpete wrote. "I do have some old voice mails in there and last time I checked (couple of days ago), the older messages had been deleted and moved to the Trash folder. 

"OK, if this is the case, then Vonage needs to change their settings to say that even if messages are in the Trash folder, after I've listened to any new voice mails, clear the voice mail light," he adds. "I'll do some experimenting. Thanks for the info!"

But wait- we are not done yet. 

"That shouldn't be the case (not to say it isn't), but mine is working fine, even with saved messages (messages still in the system, not in the trash) and messages in the trash," Vonage Forum Member reebok writes. 

Vonage Forum Member ChrisFix doesn't think a "fix" is needed, though. 

"I agree with reebok, you shouldn't have to do anything other than listen to your message and logout of VoiceMail for the MWI to reset. The problem seems to be in either the message read data or the server response to reset the indicator getting lost or simply not sent (server busy?)," he writes. 

ChrisFix adds he has found that the voice mail light works fine most of the time, but sometimes simply fails. "I have the same results (works fine most of the time) just by listening and hanging up," he says.

New Vonage Forum Member gagaliya's Vonage dial tone has been "gagging" lately. I guess this makes him want to "gag," which is why he's started this thread that he's named, no dialtone/disconnect when using internet

Gagaliya summarizes his problem as follows:

His internet connection is 100% stable and fast, and he's never had any issues with bandwidth or outage. When he is not using the internet, everything works fine. When he has been using the internet (surfing the web etc) for a while, and a call comes in. If he does not pick it up, it will go to his phone - not Vonage's voicemail and gets recorded, everything is fine, but when 
he picks up the call, he will see the window popup saying something like "you have been disconnected from the Internet.

"My Internet stops working, and the incoming call dropped. This happens every single time in the past 6 months," he writes. I wait 5 minutes and it's all back to normal again."

He writes that a similar thing happens when he has been using the net for a while and try to make a phone call. "I  will get no dial tone and the same 'you have been disconnected' message then lose Internet connection.

"To summarize, " gagaliya writes, "basically any time I touch the Vonage phone while using the internet, everything stops working." He then concludes the post with his setup info. 

The info in the setup summary gagaliya provided seems to contain enough info for Vonage Forum Member Steve48 to post some questions that might help him diagnose the problem here.

"You have an awful lot of packet discards on upload. That could mean an issue with your internet service provider, but have you talked to Vonage about this? It could also be a problem with the RTP or with Vonage elsewhere," Steve48 writes. "There's no reason you should live with this for so long. Call (Vonage) customer service."

But Steve48 doesn't pass on the opportunity to offer at least a preliminary diagnosis, and offer a suggestion.

"I assume that you've cycled power on all of your equipment many times over the past months," he writes. "In the unlikely event that that's not the case, give it a try."

Since it's Monday, it is time for our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. I've noticed several short but helpful and to the point posts from reebok this week.
