Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

First, I have some very exciting news. Yesterday at 3:13 p.m., the Vonage Forum got our 15 millionth page view since we started up in March, 2003. Every time you click on a page, that's one page view. So keep those page views- and those clicks- coming!

In the news, we'll see how Vonage is marketing itself to folks who are moving into a new home. We'll see how a leading Vonage executive is making the case for a concept called "net neutrality," in which you will be assured of a fast Vonage connection even if your broadband provider offers their own Voip service that competes with Vonage.  We'll also point you to a Vonage VoIP Forum thread from two new Forum Members/new Vonage customers who were experiencing different varieties of the same problems- call echo. One thread is from a Member who was hearing echoes on international calls, and another thread from a Member  who was hearing echoes- and called Vonage customer service to report it and seek a solution.

Vonage Offer Will Be in Homeowner Welcome Kit

The American Homeowners Association is the nation's leading membership organization delivering savings, services and advocacy for homeowners.

The AHA expanded its new AHA Official New Movers Welcome Kit this week, doubling the monthly reach to 500,000 just-moved homeowner families within days after they have moved into their new homes. Vonage is one of the new sponsors in the AHA Fall mailing, with a service offer insert included in the Welcome kit.

Vonage Exec Argues for "Net Neutrality"

During a luncheon presentation sponsored by Public Knowledge last Friday, Congressional staffers heard the case for requiring that broadband Internet service providers keep their networks open to all services, such as Voip services like Vonage that may compete with their own offerings. The concept is called "net neutrality."

Vonage Vp- Govt. Affairs Chris Murray said net neutrality is "the most important issue to get right in terms of the way the Internet is going to evolve over the next decade." The topic must be approached with much humility and considerable deliberation, he said.

"Net neutrality means that the Internet keeps working like the Internet works today," Murray added,  meaning "you don't have to go to kiss the network owners' ring before you offer your service to the public. It's about keeping innovation at edge [and] keeping the network working in an end-to-end, open fashion like the Internet has always worked."


On The Vonage Voip Forum

First, you might remember that I mentioned we received our 15 millionth page view yesterday afternoon. You know that Stats box at the lower left hand corner? Well, I was able to get a screen capture of the Vonage stats box when we hit that magic number. Here it is:

Well, can't overlook the fact that so many of those page views were from Forum Members who've posted or read Vonage Forum Threads. With that in mind, let's see what's up on the Forum today:

New Vonage Forum Member blafusel was hearing echoes when he used his new Vonage service to call France. So he started a thread about the problem, and named the thread Echo problem, but only on international calls!

"I am a new subscriber (2 days old)," blafusel writes. "I do like the service, however, when placing international calls to France I can hear my echo. The other side, doesn't. I tried local calls, and they work fine without any echo problem."

Blafusel then posts the results of his testyourvoip check.

Next, jdr30, a Vonage representative and a Vonage Forum Member, replied. 

"Echo is typically caused by latency. Your connection looks pretty good, however it looks like a latency issue," jdr 30 writes.
"Change Bandwidth to 50k , then 30k, re-test and post results," jdr advises blafusel.

Blafusel did that and then made a new post in which he wrote, "thanks for the tip! Setting it to 50 fixed the problem."

By the way, several Vonage employees are Forum Members. Maybe that's one of many reasons we get so many page views!

On a new Vonage Forum thread titled New customer, my first CS experience, brand new Vonage Forum Member adam28577 describes what happened after he came home from a leading consumer electronics retailer with his Vonage kit. 

"We brought home the unit and for the most part setup was very easy and painless. The only issue we had was a persistent echo on the other end of the line (not for us but the party we were talking too). After searching the forums a bit here, which are a wealth of information, I noticed our firmware was way way out of date," adam28577 writes. "We were on 1.20 and 1.55 was the most recent release.

"I was unable to flash the router for some reason myself so I gave Customer Service a call at Vonage. Despite what I read here I got right through instantly to a tech," he adds. " The tech was very pleasant and knew exactly what to do. He called me back on my cell phone and forced my router to update. He even stayed on the line the entire time and made sure that the bios actually was updated to the new version on the router."

Things are working fine now, adam reports.

"Fortunately, it seems that the firmware upgrade has solved our echo issue and our call quality has been superb since," he notes. "Hopefully it will continue to remain this way.

So what does adam think of his first experience dealing directly with Vonage?

"I must say my first experience was a great one and figured I'd share it since boards like this tend to see more negative than positive posts," he writes. "I'd also like to thank the community here for allowing me to share this and for the wealth of information that is available for customers.

"I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year," adam closes his post by saying.
