Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 6, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. In the news, we'll look at what Consumer Reports readers say about VoIP, and tell you how many times users searched for the term "Vonage" on a popular group of search services sites. We'll also point you to a Vonage VoIP Forum thread about difficulties with incoming calls, as well as a thread from a Vonage Forum Member who is looking to replace his lost power adapter he's been using with his Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage: A Popular Search Term

VoIPAction reports that over 15 million online searches were conducted for VoIP search terms in September 2005. At Overture alone, over 3.6 million searches were conducted for Voip related topics and businesses with the most searched term being 'VoIP' at 1,407,465 searches, followed by 'IP Telephony' at 558,847 searches and 'Broadband Phone' with 306,048 searches. For VoIP company-specific searches at Overture Search Services (now known as Yahoo! Search Marketing), Vonage finished second with 173,892 queries.

Consumer Reports Says Majority of Voip Users "Very" or "Completely" Satisfied

The new issue of Consumer Reports has a report on the Voip market, and of course, mentions Vonage.

"Consumers tired of paying big bills for traditional landline telephone service are increasingly turning to the Internet for some financial relief," Consumer Reports writes. "Many are saving $20 to $50 or more a month by using Voice over Internet Protocol, often called Voice over IP or VoIP. It transmits your voice calls over the same Internet lines that carry your e-mail. Phone companies, cable companies, and newcomers such as Vonage offer VoIP service."

Consumer Reports adds that about 57 percent of consumers with both Voip and landline service said Internet phone calls sounded at least as good as calls made on their traditional phone line and that the majority of survey respondents who used both Voip and a cell phone said Internet phoning offered more-reliable connections than their cell phone and comparable voice quality.  More than half of the respondents said they were very or completely satisfied using VoIP.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member theMotoMan has been having trouble with his incoming Vonage calls. So he's started a thread called Garbled voice with static on incoming calls.

Logging in from Brighton, Col., theMotoMan posts the results of his call, and adds: "I am receiving garbled voice with static, mostly on incoming calls, but it has happened on a few outgoing calls. The calling party retains decent voice quality while the receiving Vonage party experiences severe garbled voice with static," he writes. "If you hang up and call the person back, it usually sounds fine.

"This has gotten a lot worse in the last 2 or 3 weeks, theMotoMan adds.

"The thing that strikes me is the 12.7% lost packets on the signals coming to you, with 0% on outgoing," Vonage Forum Member Steve48 writes. "This seems to match the problem you're having. It looks like an ISP issue to me."

Then, Vonage Forum Member j-card shows his hand, advising theMotoMan that the more info he has, the better.

"Just load up tcpIQ's Line Speed Meter 3.0, and get it to test 48 times/day (the maximum) and review your results... After a week or so, you should have pretty accurate daily results, but the longer you run it, the better they will be," he writes. "It does a nice job of measuring latency and up/down speeds, which is a good thing to have."

On the Vonage Voip Forum, Member azbill posts the bad news. By reading the name of his thread you can tell the bad news: Lost Power Adapter for Cisco ATA-186.

"During a move the power adapter for my Cisco ATA-186 was lost," azbill writes. "I've tried many avenues attempting to purchase the genuine Cisco part. Nothing has worked."

PM me the acct number I will try to get you a genuine replacement power adapter," writes Vonage Forum Member ColdGin. "No promises."

OK, Members, that reminds me. Some of you who are new here may not be familiar with our PM (Private Message) feature. This feature enables you to send an off-board private message to other Forum Members. If, as in the case I just cited, you want to send a Private Message to someone whose post you have just read, just click the PM icon underneath the post. A new window will open in which you can compose your Private Message. After you write your PM, you can even spell check it. When you are completed with that, and want to send your PM along, just click Submit. The Member you sent your message to will receive a notification that a new PM is waiting to be opened.

So How Do We Come Up With Those Titles For You Members?

I am sure that many of you have noticed that next to each posts, we have a description of each Member- "Vonage Forum Associate," Vonage Forum Evangelist," etc. Most of these titles are assigned based on the number of Posts Members have made.

There's no secret formula. In case you are wondering, here it is:

New Forum Member 1 Post; Vonage Forum Member at least 10 Posts; Vonage Forum Associate, at least 25 Posts; Vonage Forum Junior, at least 40 Posts; Vonage Forum Senior, at least 75 Posts; Vonage Forum Master, at least 150 Posts; Vonage Forum Evangelist, at least 300 Posts, and Vonage Forum MVM, a minimum of 1000 Posts.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest !!
