Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - November 23 - 27, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 23, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Because our four day Thanksgiving Holiday starts tomorrow, this will be the last Digest until Monday. Our In The Blogs feature, which we usually run on Friday, will run on Monday.

In the news, we'll look at an upgrade Vonage is performing Saturday morning. We'll also discover which Canadian cities and towns now have the option of Vonage service with local numbers. We'll look at Vonage Forum threads about those local Canadian numbers, and how one member managed to get the volume on his Vonage connection lowered to his liking. And since many of you will be packing up to visit family and friends, we'll go back for one last look at a thread I started earlier this week having to do with whether you will talk up Vonage service to the folks you are visiting.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage To Perform Customer Service Center Upgrade This Saturday

Here's the official announcement from Vonage, which you can also see on the Vonage Forum if you log in:

"As part of our ongoing efforts to improve our customer service, we will be upgrading our internal customer service systems on Saturday 11/26/2005 approximately between 1AM and 4AM Eastern Time. During the course of this maintenance our customer service center may not be available by telephone. In the interim, you may be able to find answers to your question online. Please click the 'help' tab on the home page of our web site, or log in to your web account for access to details regarding your account.

"During this period, your telephone service will be fully functional; none of your account features will be affected by this upgrade. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this brief service interruption, and look forward to providing you with improved service at the conclusion of this maintenance."

Vonage Canada Expands In B.C.

Vonage Canada has announced it is offering service in six new communities in British Columbia beyond Vancouver and Victoria where the Vonage service is currently available. These new communities are: Penticton, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Kelowna, Richmond, and Vernon. Residents of these communities have always been able to use Vonage for local and long distance phone service, as long as they choose a number with an area code outside of their respective municipalities. But with this new announcement, customers can keep their current phone number

"With this expansion, Vonage Internet phone service is available in more BC communities than any of our competitors," said Bill Rainey, president, Vonage Canada. "Over the last couple of months residents of BC have seen a considerable reduction in the level of service provided by their incumbent phone company. They deserve better. Vonage Internet phone service provides a true alternative by offering what we call 'more phone and less bill' and superior customer service."

Customers in the communities of Penticton, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Kelowna, Richmond, and Vernon can have their current phone number transferred to Vonage or choose a new telephone number within the popular 604, 205 and 778 area codes. All available area codes and communities are listed on the website.

Speaking of, did you know we have a Vonage Canada section on our Vonage Forum? You can go there directly at Heck. Let's go there now, and see what they are saying on the Vonage Canada section of the Vonage Forum.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Canada Forum thread called More Local Numbers In BC, miket603 kicks things off by announcing the new local numbers, and giving his take.

Then, Forum Member Mustardman puts up a post. He says that he is in Kelowna, B.C and have been checking the Vonage website daily for the last 3 months waiting for the "glorious day that I can be free of" his current phone provider. "That day has come. The first day Kelowna was added to the website I went down to Staples, got my PAP2 and was up and running in minutes with number porting in progress," he writes.

"I don't plan to give (his current phone company) one more penny...EVER...once they port my number over," he adds.

Then, miket603 returns to write "Congrats! I remember the day that I was liberated from (that same local phone company). I've been much happier ever since."

Back on November 12, Vonage Forum Member Navid200 was frustrated with the volume of conversation on his Vonage connection being too high. So he started a thread that he called It's too LOUD!!

Several Forum Members offered their advice. Now, Navid20 posts that the problem has fixed. Because of that, the thread is now named It's too LOUD!! RESOLVED.

Here's how he resolved the loudness issue:

"Finally, it seems to have been resolved. It is not loud anymore," Navid200 writes. "The last time I called customer service, the person I spoke with reduced the receive gain and it has been OK since (about a week ago). I generally don't like to feature the same thread three days (or even two days) in a row, but since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, why not?

I know that so many of you are getting ready to fly or drive to visit family members this Thanksgiving. Others of you will host relatives. With that in mind, I had this idea for a Vonage Forum thread that I've named, Will You Suggest Vonage To Your Relatives Over Thanksgiving?

As I write in the thread:

"With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up, I know a number of you will be flying and driving to spend a few days with family members. Others are getting ready to host family members who will be visiting.

"I'm guessing that while you are with your relatives, some of you will feel the urge to talk up Vonage to your relations. Especially those who will tell you they wish you called more often.

"And that might be the time that some of you might say something like "hey Dad you are right- but did you know there's this thing called VoIP that lets you make unlimited calls throughout North America for one low monthly rate?"

"And then what if Mom, Dad, Aunt Susie or Uncle Bill is interested? Will you go to their den and show them your Vonage - and if they are interested will you want to take them to a Vonage retailer if they accompany you as you start your Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving or order it online?

I just checked and there already are well over 25 answers posted! One of the latest ones is posted by Air Junky

"Oh yea, I've been telling about Vonage for a while now. I've been with Vonage over 2 yrs now & had less than a handful of issues," he writes. "Installing the Voip router in my network, dealing with power outages, setting up 911, and surfing while we're talking........ every obstacle has been a breeze to overcome. I look forward to bragging about it over another holiday dinner."

And then DannyBoy84 writes that if you want to convert your relatives to Vonage users,  "Take your adaptor with you, and let them make some of their holiday calls on it. We all call long distance a lot more on the holidays. This was they can see the call quality for themselves.

"Then tell them all those calls were free," he adds, noting that if you have an unlimited plan, those calls are free in a sense.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Have a great and Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We'll be back on Monday  morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - including our popular In The Blogs feature as well as our Vonage Forum Member of the Week selection !!
