Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - November 17, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 17, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. We'll catch up with a new award a Vonage-compatible product has just won. We'll explore Vonage Forum threads in which a user wants to re-activate his Vonage router, and another wants to add a fax line but is wondering if he can do so using the same adapter he is running his Vonage service thru.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Uniden Phone Can Claim: TIME Is On My Side

This week's issue of TIME magazine has a rundown of what their editors consider the "Most Amazing Inventions of 2005."

In the tech area, TIME mentions the $190 priced, Uniden Internet Phone for Vonage.

"This is one of the first mainstream phones built for the new wave of “voice over IP” broadband phone services, TIME writes. "As with other Uniden models, additional handsets don’t require their own jacks."

In case you are wondering, I drew the title of that news item from the great old Rolling Stones song, "Time Is On My Side."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Can you re-activate an old Vonage router?, new Vonage Forum Member dgnr818 describes what he did to get him into the fix that he is in.

"I signed up for Vonage service a month ago and originally had the Linksys RTP300. Service was great, no problems," dgnr818 writes. "But then I decided I wanted to set up a wireless network for some cameras I have around the house to watch the kids, etc so I ordered the WRTP54G."

Dgnr818 then says for the past couple of days he's had a few incidents with no dial tone and interruptions in internet access (while his modem is fine) he's had to reset the router several times which undid all the network settings he had previously set.

"So I figured I'd call Vonage to re-activate my RTP300 and I would take the WRTP54G back to the retailer and get a regular wireless router for the other stuff," dgnr818 adds. "However Vonage customer service tells me they cannot re-activate an old router". He asks if this is true, also from having read the section of the FAQ on the Vonage website where it says -regarding a returning customer using an old Vonage router- "Unfortunately Vonage cannot re-activate terminated or closed accounts. You will need to sign up for a new account and contact Customer Care at 1-Vonage-HELP (1-866-243-4357) to use your old Phone Adapter on your new account."

"Totally disgusted and confused at this point. Is my RTP300 useless now?" he asks.

Reebok, who has made more posts than any other Vonage Forum Member (except for your humble moderator, that is) jumps in with a post advising dgnr818 to call Vonage Customer Care and ask for a Level 3 support person.

On a new Vonage Forum thread with the title of Adding fax line possible?, Vonage Forum Member grizzley  writes that he I has two Vonage phone lines, both run from the same adapter, and would like to add a FAX line but wonders if he can.

"After adding the second line, when I login to my account I no longer see any options to add a FAX line, only additional lines," he writes. "Is this an option you lose if you run two lines from the same adapter? Or will they send a new adapter?"

Grizzley said he's already called tech support but was informed it would be a longer wait than he had time for at the moment. Grizzley added that his ear couldn't bear (my word- ha, ha) "a phone being smashed against it for that long."

(If I make jokes like that, you can tell the week is too long, already-Dan)

Steve48, who is our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week, posts a reply.

"You can add another line," he writes. (Vonage will) "send you a second adapter."

So How Do We Come Up With Those Titles For You Members?

I am sure that many of you have noticed that next to each posts, we have a description of each Member- "Vonage Forum Associate," Vonage Forum Evangelist," etc. Most of these titles are assigned based on the number of Posts Members have made.

There's no secret formula. In case you are wondering, here it is:

New Forum Member 1 Post; Vonage Forum Member at least 10 Posts; Vonage Forum Associate, at least 25 Posts; Vonage Forum Junior, at least 40 Posts; Vonage Forum Senior, at least 75 Posts; Vonage Forum Master, at least 150 Posts; Vonage Forum Evangelist, at least 300 Posts, and Vonage Forum MVM, a minimum of 1000 Posts.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our very popular In The Blogs feature!!
