Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - November 15, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 15, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today, we'll read why Vonage doesn't think the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is spreading the best of Holiday Cheer. We'll show you a screen grab of a recent tour of Vonage's Network Operations center. We'll look at a Vonage Voip Forum thread from a four-month Vonage user who all of a sudden can no longer get a dialtone, as well as another thread from a Forum Member curious about whether or not it is OK to record Vonage conversations.

Vonage In The Headlines

Is The U.S. FCC Playing "Scrooge" With Vonage

Most Internet-based phone services do not expect to meet a U.S. government mandate to provide all their subscribers full-featured 911 service by Nov. 28. Because of this, many will have to stop signing up customers in much of the country during the holidays. A group of Internet-based providers has asked a federal court to suspend the deadline.

Although Vonage was not part of this request, it doesn't sound like they are looking forward to this move with Holiday cheer. "The (Federal Communications Commission) effectively has told us to stop building our business for the holidays," says Chris
Murray, director for government affairs for Vonage.

Vonage's Network Operations Center Featured in Video, Blogs

Ordinarily, we wait until Friday's Digest to highlight posts from Blogs that talk about Vonage. But I thought we would make an exception in this case. Blogger Tom Keating recently got a tour of Vonage's headquarters and Network Operations Center. Tom actually made a video file of his tour. Another blogger, Russell Shaw, took an image from Tom's tour video and posted it on his blog. I thought this post was kind of neat, so I made a page for it on the Vonage Forum. Here's the link to the page I made with Russ' post.

So speaking of the Vonage Forum..

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member RogerX has been a Vonage user for four months, but hasn't been able to get a Vonage dialtone for more than a week. Because he's not as happy a camper as he would like to be, Roger X has started a thread that he calls No Dial Tone for Eight Days - New Router?.

He says he is "getting 'Settings Are Failed!' when trying to restore factory defaults on router. Network traffic is fine, router continuously gives "the router is still restarting" or "synchronizing services" forever, but never gives an "Online" state for voice," he writes.

RogerX notes that Vonage tech support has told RogerX they would like to be on the line with him to perform some tests, and that a cell phone might be the best way to coordinate that. RogerX doesn't have a cell phone, but then Steve48, our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week, posts some ideas.

Steve48 suggests that first, RogerX perform a test call to Boston on www.testyourvoip.com

"A test call to Boston before going any further would still be a good idea," Steve48 writes. "Even assuming you're right about the dead router, it would be one more data item supporting your conclusion.

"Second, perhaps a friend has a cell phone that you can borrow? It's a lot to ask, but many cell phone users have free minutes in the evening and on the weekends," Steve adds. Alternately, if you can take your adapter to the home of a friend with broadband and a land line, you could test the adapter on his/her setup and then call Vonage from there when it doesn't work."

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread titled Save phone calls?, new Vonage Forum Member ajiva isn't "jiving" when he asks: "When someone calls my house, or I call out is it possible to some how record digitally the conversation? The voicemail system does this but of course only for messages left," he writes. "It would rock if every time I got a phone call a wav file of the conversation was emailed to me. Again I realized there are laws against this, but maybe something that said got buy in from the calling person."

Well, nothing's wrong with being curious, ajiva. I am curious about a lot of things myself. But we're glad that you checked.

Ajiva got two very helpful posts from other Vonage Forum Members. Once again, Steve48 steps in, this time with a link to an older but still timely Vonage Forum thread called recording VoIP calls. And then navydavy2001 posts a link to the Cornell University Law School site where they've run an article named "Interception and disclosure of wire, oral, or electronic communications prohibited." Here's the link that navydavy2001 supplied.

So How Do We Come Up With Those Titles For You Members?

I am sure that many of you have noticed that next to each posts, we have a description of each Member- "Vonage Forum Associate," Vonage Forum Evangelist," etc. Most of these titles are assigned based on the number of Posts Members have made.

There's no secret formula. In case you are wondering, here it is:

New Forum Member 1 Post; Vonage Forum Member at least 10 Posts; Vonage Forum Associate, at least 25 Posts; Vonage Forum Junior, at least 40 Posts; Vonage Forum Senior, at least 75 Posts; Vonage Forum Master, at least 150 Posts; Vonage Forum Evangelist, at least 300 Posts, and Vonage Forum MVM, a minimum of 1000 Posts.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, !!
