Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 11, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today, we cover a news story about a company Vonage has picked to work with as it expands its service in Canada. We'll see why an investment banker sued Vonage, and what Vonage has to say about it. We'll even show you where you can watch a short video that shows the VTech phone you can use with your Vonage service. Today is our popular In The Blogs feature, and the bloggers we read regularly have some interesting posts we'll tell you about. And we'll point you to a Vonage VoIP Forum thread that will tell you how we've beefed up our Forum- and even give you a real look-see at what we are up to here.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Canada Selects Peering Company To Ensure Reliability

Vonage Canada has announced that it has selected Peer 1 Network Enterprises, Inc. to provide Internet infrastructure for Vonage Canada's Internet phone service roll-out to a growing number of Canadian homes and businesses.

Servers for this infrastructure are going to be located in Vonage's Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal data centers.

Vonage Canada says that in order to expand its network in Canada, it had been seeking to partner with an Internet network and infrastructure provider that could provide world-class service uptime, full redundancy and disaster recovery solutions to minimize service disruptions. They were impressed with Peer 1 Network's scalability across numerous locations.

"The general public expects and demands high-quality, reliable telephone service. Service interruption is unacceptable," said Bill Rainey, president of Vonage Canada. "For that reason, we decided that Peer 1 Network offered the best Internet network performance as well as the infrastructure that would allow us to deliver a reliable, scalable service to our customers -- anytime and anywhere."

Vonage Sued By Investment Banker

Vonage has been sued by an investment banker who helped raise the company's first outside financing, saying Vonage owes him at least $14 million in fees.

Vonage spokeswoman Brooke Schulz told the Reuters news service that Vonage had tried to settle the dispute with Tanzer, but the banker, but those talks fell through at the last minute.

She added that the company feels that in suing, Vonage feels the banker "tried to ride the coattails" of the investment bank he was associated with- a bank that she said "did all the work."

Watch A Live Video Describing VTech Vonage Phone

I just came across a live demo of the VTech Vonage phone. The phone is one of several devices demonstrated by The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg to Dan Farber of the technology site ZDNet. If you want to see the phone, as well as demonstrations of other neat stuff like video players, camcorders, and handhelds, then you will want to watch the video linked from Tip: Walt saves the best (the VTech Vonage phone) for last.

Speaking of technology writers we read regularly, let's go to our In The Blogs feature.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog puts those rumors to rest that Vonage might sell itself to BellSouth.

Jeff Pulver of is disappointed by the U.S. FCC's decision telling Voip companies they cannot market to customers in areas where full E911 service over VoIP connections is not yet available.

Tom Keating of Voip Blog makes a post with video from Vonage's headquarters and network operations center. After touring the center, Tom writes: "Well, Vonage has come a long way since their early days and this video can put to rest that Vonage doesn't care about customer service. They have a very professional looking customer care center and a pretty cool looking NOC I might add." If you want to reach the post where Tom has posted this video, click here.

Mark Evans of the Mark Evans Blog doesn't make any new posts about Vonage this week, but I recommend that you read some of his posts about a hypothetical sale of Vonage, as well as the more realistic procedure underway to try and make Vonage a publicly traded company.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog makes fun at some of these articles that say that Voip services like Vonage are too risky to use. He calls that post "Meet The Mockers." Very funny, Russ. Here's a link to his post.

Andy Abramson of Voip Watch wonders exactly how many customers Vonage has.

Rich Tehrani of Voip Blog mentions that according to one search service's rankings, is the #773 most visited website on the 'Net..

On Ted Wallingford's The Voip Weblog, he doesn't seem impressed at all with one of Vonage's leading competitors in the Voip space. He's also suspicious of big phone and cable companies attitudes toward competitors such as Vonage.

Mark Milliman is an interesting new telecom and Voip blogger I've just come across. He knows a lot about the technology but writes very clearly so that even non-techs can understand. This week, he takes a stand against SBC's CEO's statement that providers such as Vonage should pay a fee to be carried on SBC's high-speed Internet connections. Mark also strongly states the case why and how the U.S. should make sure that broadband- which is necessary to use services like Vonage- should be in more widespread use.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. This week I will point you to U.K.-based Stephen Brennan and his Camelot Photography Blog. Turns out that Stephen has just signed up for Vonage. He writes that he has "bought a Linksys PAP2-UV to connect to Vonage for a subscription of Ł9.99 a month all local and national calls to the UK and Ireland are free, with mobile calls between 5p/min at weekends, 15p/min evenings and 20p/min daytime and very low rates on international calls. It has voicemail, conference calls, caller display, call waiting, call diversion and uses any standard touch tone phone(s). It connects to the broadband router and doesn’t require any installation - a piece of cake! It means we have a second telephone line at a fraction of the cost of an additional BT line. Call quality is excellent as well."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On some days, we get as many as 35,000 or even 40,000 page views. Sometimes, we have hundreds of  people visiting the site, sometimes even more. With the ranks of our members and the number of Vonage subscribers both increasing every day, that's not surprising. In fact, I'd say it is kind of cool. And you're here now, right?

One big key to making all of this work is what some geeks call "scalability." That means installing hardware and software that grows as your demand, and your traffic grows. I am sure you have been to websites that were not "scalable." You get timed out, or pages are very slow to load.

Well, we don't want anything like that to happen around here. In fact, I spent a good bit of yesterday making sure it wasn't going to happen. In fact, I started a thread about this whole procedure. I named the thread The Server Upgrade.

In an effort to keep up with the constant Vonage growth and to handle the peak loads, I have made a rather significant upgrade to the forum servers. We had to disable new postings for a little while on Thursday, but it was for a good purpose.

We are now a triple server setup.

Two load balancing dual Xeon 3.2 CPU’s with 4GB Ram each up front, with a dedicated SQL DB dual Xeon 3.2 (also 4GB of Ram) cross connected to the two load balancing servers. All three operating quad SCSI disks (73GB each) and all three operating Free BSD 5.4

Forum Members will not notice a difference during normal operations, but during those times that we have 1000+ people on site, you will not experience a slowdown or any SQL errors.

I do remember one day when we had 1,026 people online at the same time. That was one day back in March when Vonage had some service interruptions. I will never forget that day: in fact, if you want to learn more about what happened back then, just go to

Many people reported glitches on this site that day, but that will not be the case now.

Not only have I been busy turbocharging our server setup, but I have installed a few Webcam for our offices.

Here, take a look:

I am betting you want to know what I am doing with that cable- and who in heck is that guy on the ladder?

The PC used for the cams is hand built, by me: Hyper Threaded, Dual Core Intel Pentium 4 Processor Extreme Edition 3.46 GHz, 4 GB of Ram with a GEForce 7800 Overclocked PCI Express Graphics card with 256MB of Memory. It is all in a clear acrylic case with five neon fans.

The cameras are Logitech Quickcam Fusion’s, which are wide angle cameras that show more real estate, but make everything look much smaller than true life (i.e., the TV in my office is a 36” RCA, but you would never know it.) Currently two cameras are running, but the guy on the ladder was doing the wiring for two more. They are all connected via USB 2.0 extender cables with power boosters.

The software that makes it all happen is webcam32 by Surveyor.

So How Do We Come Up With Those Titles For You Members?

I am sure that many of you have noticed that next to each posts, we have a description of each Member- "Vonage Forum Associate," Vonage Forum Evangelist," etc. Most of these titles are assigned based on the number of Posts Members have made.

There's no secret formula. In case you are wondering, here it is:

New Forum Member 1 Post; Vonage Forum Member at least 10 Posts; Vonage Forum Associate, at least 25 Posts; Vonage Forum Junior, at least 40 Posts; Vonage Forum Senior, at least 75 Posts; Vonage Forum Master, at least 150 Posts; Vonage Forum Evangelist, at least 300 Posts, and Vonage Forum MVM, a minimum of 1000 Posts.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our pick for Vonage Forum Member of the Week!!
