Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - November 10, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 10, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today, we'll look at another one of those surveys that rank Vonage's advertising expenditures, and read a write-up of Vonage in get this- a magazine dedicated to your health. We'll cruise thru a Vonage Voip Forum thread on Vonage experiences of users in one U.S. city, as well as a thread that describes the problem a Forum Member was having with his Linksys RTP300 router he's been using with his Vonage service.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Ranked Internet's Number One Advertiser By "Media Value"

TMS Media Intelligence is another one of those analysis firms that ranks Internet advertisers. Their formula- which I admit I don't quite understand- ranks Internet advertisers by the "media value" of the sites they advertise on.

Guess what. For September, 2005, Vonage ranked first. And unlike other surveys, technology companies were not high on the list. Vonage was the only tech company ranked in the top ten, at least as how TMS Media Intelligence classifies tech. The department of Dell that sells computers was the second highest ranked tech company- 13th on the list.

Men's Health Mag Ranks Vonage Wi-Fi Phone #26 Best New Tech Toy For Men

Men's Health magazine usually talks about diet, exercise, and all the healthy stuff. I can tell you how important that is.

But they do tech stories, too. The new issue ranks Top 100 New Tech Toy for Men. Number 26 is the Vonage Wi-Fi Voip Phone.

"Like Martha last summer, most Voip phones are handcuffed to the home," the magazine writes. "This one is as portable as a cellphone, tapping into any wireless hot spot from Baltimore to Beijing. In out tests as at dozen Starbucks in Manhattan (all within a half block), the phone instantly logged on but lost reception when we strayed too far from our latte."

Most of the time, I use Vonage in my office. Hey, come to think of it - want to take a peek at my office  and see what I am doing right now? I've installed a Webcam, which I've linked from the Vonage Voip Forum. Go to this link: If you see me, I'm probably looking over a new thread just posted to the Vonage Forum.

Speaking of...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

From time to time, we get posts from new Forum Members in specific cities, asking other Members in that area how Vonage service has been working for them.

Today is one of those days. On a new thread he's named Vonage/ISP Experiences in Portland, OR, Forum Member Vonager writes that he is "looking for experiences (good, bad, and ugly) with Vonage and ISPs in Portland, OR."

He adds the following specific questions:

1) "Checking the Vonage website under Availability, they have 503 area code coverage. Will this be a local call for folks calling from the greater Portland area? Is this THE area code to get?

2) "ISP. I believe Comcast is the big one there. How's their service quality in Portland? Any other ISP players you'd recommend or is to be avoided, and why?

3) "How's T-Mobile cell phone coverage in Portland? What about Oregon in general? (concern for SimulRing/Call Fwd and Network Availability as they go to T-Mobile cells)

New Vonage Forum Member craigyg69 posts direct answers to Vonager's questions:

1. "Yes, 503 is a local call in the Portland/Metro area, and that's the area code you want. 971 is also local, but it's only a couple years old so it's not that common.

2. "I've been using Comcast with Vonage since February. I haven't had any problems, the Comcast service has been great. If you're lucky you might be in an area that Verizon FIOS is available in, and that'd be a good alternative to Comcast.

3. "Can't help you with T-Mobile service, but I use Verizon and Nextel and service is good, I would assume T-Mobile is similar. If you stay in the populated areas of Oregon cell coverage is good, not sure about the boonies, which there is a lot of around here

Useful stuff.

On a thread started last week but resolved just today named Dropped calls with RTP300, new Vonage Forum Member jallison wrote "I'm suddenly having trouble with calls being dropped after about 30 seconds. This just started happening today. No changes in the network setup for several months."

He then filed specifics about his setup. To show you how useful this info is in terms of helping other Vonage Voip Forum Members diagnose the problem, I'm going to paste in jallison's info here. I will boldface the information requested.

1. Your location - La Habra Heights, CDA

2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Verizon DSL

3. Upload and download speeds - According to
Your download speed : 268 kbps or 33.5 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 108 kbps or 13.5 KB/sec.

4. Modem make and model - I assume this is referring to DSL modem, which is a Fujitsu of some flavor.

5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2 - RTP300

6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC

DSL -> SMC Barricade -> RTP300 -> Panasonic KX-TS3282 phone
Desktop wired to the SMC; Laptop wireless to the SMC

7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc

"I can get a dial tone and make a call," jallison adds. "Call works for just about 30 seconds and then abruptly drops. If I try to pick up again I get a raspy buzzing sound in place of a dial tone.

"Wait a while," he writes, "and I can get a dial tone again."

Based on the info jallison provided, fellow Vonage Forum Member DallasFlier took a stab at helping out.

DallasFlier wrote that "108Kbps is barely acceptable for Vonage service, and is likely the primary cause of your problems. Have your speeds always been this low? 268k/108k is way lower than any normal DSL speeds that I'm aware of. Its likely your DSL throughput has recently been degraded for some reason."

Then, DallasFlier suggested to jallison that he should "check with Verizon, after first checking to see what speeds you're SUPPOSED to be getting with your service. In the meantime, you might try going into "Bandwidth Saver in your Vonage control panel and setting it at the lowest 30Kbps rate until your DSL speeds are better.

"This might fix the dropped calls and choppy audio, at the expense of slightly lower audio quality," DallasFlier added.

But today jallison updated the situation in a new post.

"Turns out there was some trouble with the Verizon DSL line. After many calls to them they finally seem to have fixed it," he wrote.

By the way, I have said this before, but if you start a post with a question, and you manage to get the issue resolved, it is always helpful to make a follow-up post to let your fellow Vonage Voip Forum Members know. This way, they can move on to helping other Members.
