Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. In today's edition, we'll see what Vonage has to say about yet another 911 dialing ruling by the U.S. FCC, and look in on a letter Vonage has just sent to a friend of mine who hasn't quite gotten his act together yet and sent the required location information to Vonage. Today, we'll review Vonage Voip Forum threads on pricing, and where you can get more info about codes you can dial to access some of Vonage's special dialing features.

Vonage Criticizes FCC Marketing Restriction Rule

More details have emerged about the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's E911 orders. And Vonage isn't too pleased, either.

The FCC has ruled  Vonage and other Voip do not have to cut off subscribers even if they are not provided enhanced 911 emergency service which gives dispatchers their location and phone number, the FCC now says. Yet in a clarification the FCC now says Voip companies such as Vonage will be required to stop marketing efforts and to not sign new customers in  areas where they are not connecting 911 calls with the person’s location and phone number. 

Chris Murray, who is vice president for government affairs at Vonage, doesn't like this ruling.

"Our concern is that this marketing restriction will slow down our deployment of E911 because it gives clear incentives to some of our competitors, who control access to the 911 systems, to delay every way possible," he said.

Vonage Sending More Letters Out About 911 Location Info

Speaking of 911 calling, have a friend who is a Vonage user (actually many of my friends are), but this guy tends to put stuff off. That may be well and good, but not in the way Vonage looks at it. 

Last night, he just got another letter from Vonage Customer Care. The letter apologizes for being persistent, but urges my friend to provide Vonage with the information they need to activate 911 Dialing.

He's let me reproduce this letter here, on the condition that I leave his phone number out. I will run this letter now as an illustration of how Vonage is being very thorough in terms of them having 911 location information on everyone.

Here's the letter my friend on the West Coast got last night:

Dear Valued Vonage Customer,
All Voip providers are required by the FCC to provide 911 Dialing service to all of our customers. You may have missed the recent emails requesting that you provide us with location information (street address) where you will be using your Vonage service so that we can activate your 911 Dialing.

We apologize for sending you repeated notifications, but we are required to have all of our customers activate 911 Dialing. In particular, we must activate 911 Dialing for your phone number (1-xxx-xxx-xxxx). In addition, it is important to note that if you have multiple Vonage lines you must activate 911 Dialing for each line separately.

Please immediately login to your web account and select the Features link on your dashboard. You can provide us with your street address information from the 911 Dialing feature box.

Please note that 911 calls are routed based on the street address you have registered with us, so if you move your device you must re-register your new street address. Also, if you add a line to your account you will need to activate 911 Dialing by providing us with your street address for that line as well. Remember, you can easily update your street address at any time through your web account.

Steve48 is one of our most knowledgeable Members and posters here on the Vonage VoIP Forum. He usually posts to answer questions, so the fact that he started a thread Have the prices just gone up? as a question rather than an answer is worthy of notice.

"I've been talking to a friend about signing up with Vonage. I've told him how the first month is free and they'll provide a free RTP300 router (except for $10 shipping)," Steve says. "He started looking at the signup procedure tonight, and the calculator says that he pays for the first month. 

"During the signup procedure, they offer him a choice of routers, and the RTP300 costs $10 after rebate (plus shipping)," he writes. "Only a VT1005RB with just one ethernet port is free."

With that post, several other Vonage Forum Members responded with some opinions of their own. One of those Members, Mr_Sorento, makes some interesting points.

"Yep, the start-up costs have definitely gone up (charging $9.99 for the RTP-300, versus it being free just 2 months ago, when I signed up). It's nice that they're offering a choice to new customers (I didn't have a choice, but I'm glad I got the RTP-300), however, did anybody notice that the FREE adapter is a REFURBISHED model???!!!," he writes. "Also,<" Mr_Sorento adds, "did you also notice that the free first month only applies to the $24.99 Unlimited plan -- not the Basic $14.99 plan."

After reading Mr_Sorento's post, Vonage Forum Member Trowski responded in his own colorful writing style.

Trowski writes that "getting a RTP300 for under $10 is really not a bad deal - and to me of course the free month applies to the unlimited plan. If it applied to the basic 500 then people would talk way beyond the 500 minutes and then complain it is not 'free,'" he says. And as to the RTP300 issue raised by Mr_Sorento, Trowski  writes, "who cares if it is refurbished as long as it works.

"Just sit back and relax Mr_Sorento as you got a great deal," Trowski adds.

New Vonage Voip Forum Member Basildane was wondering whether there is a place where Vonage users can get a summary rundown of the various numerical codes they can use to access Vonage's special features. Because he had that question, Basildane started a Vonage Forum thread that he's called, Is there a summary of the Vonage codes?

"I see mention of codes such as #104, and *99, but I have not been able to find any mention of what those code do, or what other functions exist," Basildane writes. "Is there a document somewhere that lists all of the functions?"

Vonage Forum Member rozy posts a link here on the Vonage Forum to summary sheet, Quick Reference For Vonage Voip Phones. Here's the link.

Rozy posts back that he did not see a reference to #104 and what that means. 

Vonage Forum Member ChrisFix posts an answer. "From my previous reading on the forum, #104 is a Direct TiVo dial prefix and isn't a Vonage code - it sets the modem in the Direct TiVo for certain parameters," he writes.
