Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. We'll see what some of you think of proposals made by very large phone companies to charge extra for services like Vonage if you use Vonage over their line. We'll check out a Vonage Voip Forum thread in which one Member solved his call issues by updating his router firmware, and another thread from a Member who solved his caller I.D. problems. By the way, this past weekend we logged our 50,000th Vonage Forum post!

You Respond To Leading Phone Company CEO Saying He Wants To Charge Vonage for Access

Yesterday, we reported that Business Week Online has a new interview with a guy named Ed Whitacre. He is the CEO of SBC, a  traditional phone company that is also one of the largest providers of DSL services that I happen to know many Vonage Forum Members use to access your Vonage service. 

After reading some of Whitacre's comments, it brought into even clearer focus for me why Vonage has added several lobbyists in Washington. Whitacre sounds like he thinks that Vonage should pay some sort of a charge to use his broadband "pipe" to deliver Voip services.

Here's what he said:

"How do you think they're going to get to customers? Through a broadband pipe. Cable companies have them. We have them. Now what they would like to do is use my pipes free, but I ain't going to let them do that because we have spent this capital and we have to have a return on it. So there's going to have to be some mechanism for these people who use these pipes to pay for the portion they're using. Why should they be allowed to use my pipes? The Internet can't be free in that sense, because we and the cable companies have made an investment and for a ... Vonage or anybody to expect to use these pipes [for] free is nuts!."

Not surprising that you Vonage Forum Members didn't take kindly to what Whitacre said. In fact, new Vonage Forum Member scotty321 beamed up to start a thread that he's called SBC CEO is against Voip using his lines.

"The customers (that's us!) are ALREADY paying for this high speed Internet access! We are ALREADY funding these 'pipelines'," he writes. It shouldn't matter WHAT we do over the high speed lines that we're paying for -- whether it's games, downloading videos from iTunes, or using Vonage VoIP service"

If you think Scotty's tone is strong, you ought to check out what others on this thread are saying about this issue. Then again, opinions can always be found on the Vonage Voip Forum. Not only opinions, but solutions to problems. So speaking of ...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member BigLar  had this problem in which he made Vonage calls but the people he heard could not hear them. But BigLar was heard here on the Forum as he made a post that he called Cannot hear other end.

"I've had Vonage for a few days now and have had a few times where there was no dial tone so I had to reboot the router. Now I'm having a problem of when I call someone they can hear me but I cannot hear them," he wrote. "I have to call back, sometimes even a few times before it works". 

BigLar added that he has Comcast cable and a Linksys WRTP54G router Firmware Version: 1.00.18.

New Vonage Forum Member rjk posted that he had a similar problem. After checking with Comcast tech support, he found out what the problem was. While we don't know yet if the solution rjk suggests will fix BigLar's problem, the solution has fixed rjk's calling issues.

"Found out the problem was the Comcast Modem provided was A DOCSIS 1.0 style, and that successful rollout of Voip needs at least a DOCSIS 1.1, but preferably a DOCSIS 2.0," he writes. "Comcast said they will switch out my modems for free." 

As a suggestion, rjk added that he thinks it is best to check the modem to see if (not only its speed), but its compliant with all the new stuff.

Here on the Vonage Voip Forum, we sometimes notice threads in which a member doesn't ask or answer a question, but posts a solution to a problem they have been having. This morning, a good example of such a thread is Caller ID Fixed !. This thread was started by new Vonage Forum Member jupiter66. Because caller I.D. issues come up from time to time here, I was glad to see this thread.

"I have a RTP300 with firmware rev 52 and was not getting caller id since I signed up 2 weeks ago. I have the phone adapter hooked in my house wiring," jupiter66 writes as background. 

"On a hunch," he tells us,  "I disconnected a very old phone that was connected in my daughters room, and voila! caller ID now works every time." Jupiter's guess is that "the old phone was apparently loading the ringer circuitry down to the point that although the phone system functioned, the caller ID did not.

"Just passing this along to see if it can help anyone else," jupiter66 writes in closing. And you know what? Judging from all the caller I.D. questions I read here on the Vonage Forum, I'll bet someone has already been helped by jupiter66's description of how he solved the problem.
