Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 25, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 25, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today’s edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition of the Vonage Forum, we'll catch up on a deal Vonage has signed with a company that will enable Vonage to return, well, servers to service quicker. We take you along with a reviewer for a large newspaper who tested out the new UTStarcom F1000 Wi-Fi Phone with Vonage service. We'll check in with a Vonage Voip Forum thread that features reports from Vonage users in Florida who were impacted by Hurricane Wilma. And we'll also hit a Vonage Forum thread about a router that won't seem to work well with a Vonage Forum Member's new broadband Internet service provider.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Announces Deal with Network Technology Manager Manufacturer Cyclades

Vonage says it has selected some of network technology solutions provider Cyclades Corp.'s out-of-band infrastructure products to support its Voip services.

Financial details of the deal were not released.

The specific technology selected by Vonage includes components of Cyclades AlterPath System.

In a statement, Michael Tribolet, executive vice president of Vonage Network said, "Cyclades out-of-band infrastructure solution has simplified the process of restoring IT and network assets enormously, allowing Vonage to reduce the time to return a server to service from hours to minutes and reducing costs in the process."

Reviewer Praises New UTStarcom F1000 Wi-Fi Phone Due From Vonage Soon

Terry Maxon of the Dallas Morning News is excited about the new UTStarcomF1000 Wi-Fi phone, which Vonage plans to sell for less than $100 momentarily.

Imagine having a cordless phone that can make calls anywhere you can find a wireless network.

She says a key advantage to the UTStarcom and other Wi-Fi phones is that they use Voice over Internet Protocol technology.

"For example, Vonage, which plans to sell the UTStarcom beginning this month, offers unlimited local and long-distance calls to the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico for $24.99 a month. The phone will sell for $100, with in-store $50 rebates at major electronics stores" she writes.

"With a Wi-Fi phone and Voip service, you can go anywhere you can find a Wi-Fi connection and make calls at no extra cost, assuming the Wi-Fi hotspot doesn't charge," she adds. "You can go to New York or Seattle and still make calls over the Internet with your home number"

To those readers who might have trouble seeing why this would be better than cell service, Maxon has this to say:.

"A cell phone ...user usually burns minutes for a call. A traditional line at home may give you unlimited local or long-distance calls, but you can't take it with you."

"This all assumes that a Wi-Fi phone works. Happily, the UTStarcom does, seamlessly," she adds. She describes a recent test she made with the phone, and with Vonage service.

""The device began searching for a wireless Internet connection, found mine (which, I blush to admit, was unsecured) and had me up and running within two minutes, complete with the 310 area code that Vonage had programmed into the handset. No software for my computer, no settings to be entered in the phone, no hassle.

Yesterday, Hurricane Wilma hit much of Florida, causing more than five million Floridians to lose power. But from posts on a thread called Vonage is still up in Stuart, Fl seems that the Vonage service, and Vonage users, fared well.

Vonage Forum Member Trowski posts that considering all the wind and rain that hit the area, Vonage's performance was proving impressive.

"I will say that Vonage worked fine in Ft. Myers and Naples all day long," adds Vonage Forum Member VonageTPA.  "Never even the slightest hiccup there. I've been on the phone with the area for ~16 hrs over the past 2 days. Safe to say that Vonage has already paid for itself with these two days alone."

Vonage Forum Member KDWycha adds that Vonage service worked great in Tampa, too.

Let's see what else is going on...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Every once in awhile, a new post with a fresh answer revives an older thread. Take for example a thread started back in July that Vonage Forum Member houuser named, Router Will Not Work With New ISP.

"I have changed ISPs and now my router does not work," houuser wrote. "The router will recognize when I use the DSL, but when using the cable ISP I have a strange occurrence. The Ethernet card light on my laptop will brink to indicate a connection for about 5 times; and then goes off."

Houuser added that when he checks the connection, he sees an ISP address but cannot connect to the Internet.

"To attempt to figure this out, I have reset the router, with negative results. Also, have unplugged and reconnected the modem," he writes, adding that when he takes the cord from the modem to the router and then plugs it back into the laptop, everything works.

There's probably a simpler answer and solution. In fact, new Vonage Forum Member DannyBoy84 posts it today.

"I would first try to power cycle everything. Shut down your computer, unplug the router, and cable modem," he advises. "Plug your Ethernet cable directly into the cable modem then to your computer. You should have a live connection. Now plug the Ethernet cable from the cable modem into port 1 of your router, and then use the other Ethernet cable to connect the modem to the router.

"Your router should pre-configure itself," he adds. "If it doesn't, your routers address is By typing that into your address bar you should get to the routers config page. For your router the defaults are:

username: admin

password: password

"In the router setup you should be able to select DHCP which is the protocol RR uses," DannyBoy adds.

Way to go, DannyBoy. And hey, I have heard the song "Danny Boy" once or twice myself.
