Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 20, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. In today's edition, we will review some exciting news- the VTech IP8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone is now available in Canada. We'll look at Vonage Voip Forum threads about Vonage's Bandwidth Saver feature, as well as a post from a brand new Vonage user and a funny post about an unlikely place a Vonage user heard a snippet of a song featured in some Vonage commercials.

So let's get started ...

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage-Configured VTech Broadband Cordless Phone System Now Available In Canada

Vonage Canada and cordless phone manufacturer VTech have announced the availability of the IP8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System in Canada. The IP8100-2 contains a built-in version of Vonage's Internet phone service and is being positioned as a device that offers consumers the flexibility of using low-cost Internet phone service throughout their homes with multiple phones in multiple rooms to multiply their savings.

The IP8100-2's phone base plugs into almost any high-speed connection and has integrated technology that eliminates the need to purchase a separate router to connect the Internet phone system. The device comes standard with two cordless handsets. Two additional handsets can be purchased separately.

In Canada, The IP 8100-2 Broadband Phone System has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $199.99 with a $65 rebate after 60 days of service. Additional handsets can be purchased for $99.99 each. The IP8100-2 is available to Canadian retail customers at The Source by Circuit City and Staples Business Depot retail outlets throughout Canada with the exception of Quebec.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Changing Codec for lower bandwidth, new Forum Member antoaneta  has a question about Vonage's default 90 kbps setting. "How do I change that to lower for when I don't have that much bandwidth?," he asks.

Reebok- our most prolific poster with more than 2,350 entries, responds with a link to the Bandwidth Saver main page on the Vonage site. The link is

As Vonage notes on that page:

" The Bandwidth Saver feature allows you to control the sound quality of your call to save valuable bandwidth. Customers with 128 Kbps connections often choose the Normal Sound Quality setting on our Dashboard. This saves bandwidth and still provides excellent call quality.

"Please note, once the Bandwidth Saver feature is chosen," Vonage continues, "it can take up to an hour for it to go into effect. If bandwidth is an issue for you or if you have occasional dropped calls, we suggest you try the Normal Sound Quality setting. To configure your account simply go to the features page of your web account."

From time to time, new Vonage users and Forum Members start threads just to say how neat they think that Vonage service is. Every once in awhile we like to cite these threads. As a matter of fact, one went up today called I'm lovin' it.

Switching from the piano keys to his PC keyboard, new Vonage Forum Member pianotech writes, "Ok, Vonage (and VOIP) newbie here and am pleasantly surprised. Had it for a day now and have had excellent quality and excellent service.

"This blows my land line away big time, right down to the call clarity and absence of background noise," he adds. Keep up the good work."

To that, Vonage Forum Member kd1s writes a post with a funny ending.

"I've had Vonage for about a year now. Service has been excellent - the only outages I've suffered were easily rectified and most of the time it was an issue on my end, not Vonage's," he writes.

OK, here's the funny part.

"Even my LNP (Local Number Portability) went through with flying colors. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that I transferred from Verizon (Formerly Bell Atlantic, and before that NYNEX, and before that New England Telephone.) and I invoked the PUC in my state to be sure the bovine effluvia was kept to a minimum," he writes.

I guess by "bovine effluvia," kd1s means that common smell around the farm.

Well, it is Thursday. I don't know about you, but I have had the kind of week where a few more laughs won't hurt. With that in mind, let me point you to an older thread called Vonage Brainwashing. Vonage Forum Member scerruti started the thread back on July 30 (hey, summer sure sounds a long time ago, doesn't it?)

"I went to a minor league baseball game the other night and a snippet of the song used in the Vonage commercials was played over the PA," scerruti wrote. "I immediately looked around for someone doing something stupid  an orange sign with white lettering."

"I have actually been to a church that has on a few occasions used about 90% of a few Vonage commercials for their own "in house promotions," Vonage Forum Member ChurchGuy added.

If you are on this thread, then you should see the "Vonage church sign" Forums Member mkstringer made, using a popular fun tool called
