Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. In today's edition, we will dwell heavily on E911, looking at news stories about a new solution Vonage just signed up for on Monday; where and when a key Vonage exec will give his thoughts on Vonage's E911 effort, and then finally, what your obligations are toward Vonage and E911- which you should take care of before Halloween. In keeping with the 911 theme of today's Digest, we'll look at a new forum with lots of posts from readers who have been wondering if their Vonage service was equipped to handle 911 calls or if they needed to resubmit their information in order for it to work properly.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Signs Up For E911 Solution

Covergence is a company that works with Internet phone providers to help them offer security and management solutions for applications and services. 

On Monday, Vonage said it would Covergence's Eclipse to provide E911 call routing, E911 call recording and E911 call detail records. Vonage said that by deploying Eclipse, Vonage it will be able to intelligently route E911 calls to the correct emergency services gateway, based on the customer information retrieved from the E911 service bureau database. 

Vonage says this will be a big help in its plans to meet FCC guidelines required of Voip service providers to offer E911 services.

But there's more. Vonage says Convergence's Eclipse will allow them to  record and create records of E911 calls. The benefit to that will be a database of information about E911 services that will help Vonage make even more refinements over time.  

"Vonage continues to seek out those technologies that will ensure our customers' safety and is rolling out E-911 services that will meet or exceed those currently available through traditional phone service," said Vonage senior vice president Martin Hakim Din. "Covergence provides us with another key piece of the puzzle and will help us to ensure that our customers receive reliable and efficient emergency phone service."

Vonage Exec To Give His Thoughts On Regulations Including E-911

There's another one of those Voip conferences coming up. As I noted here earlier this month, The Internet Telephony Fall 2005 Conference & Expo is getting closer. It will take place in Los Angeles from October 24-27. I noticed that one of the three members on a October 26 panel called "VoIP Regulatory Update: Will You Be Ready?" will be Steve Seitz, VP/911/Regulatory Affairs for Vonage. 

I won't be there, but I know people that will, so you can keep up to date here. One thing is certain: I'm sure Steve Seitz will talk a good bit about VoIP, Vonage and E-911. Which just happens to remind me...

E911 Acknowledgement Deadline Arrives On Halloween

By the way, when I was out driving around town last weekend with my family, I couldn't help but notice all the pumpkins and jack o'lanterns around town. That can only mean one thing- Halloween is fast approaching. But this year, Halloween is not the only thing happening on October 31. That day is the latest deadline imposed by the U.S. Federal Communications for Vonage and other Voip service providers such as Vonage to interrupt access for subscribers who do not get back to their provider with an acknowledgement they understand the access limitations to E911 services over VoIP. 

All this is my way of saying that October 31 is now less than two weeks away.  That means that if you are a Vonage subscriber and have not taken care of this acknowledgement thing yet, I'd get this done and over with. Like I was saying a couple of weeks ago, I know Vonage has been trying to contact you - by phone, by email, by every means but smoke signals. If I were you .. well, you know what to do.

Well, since we are talking so much about E911 today, I thought I would look to see which E911 thread on the Vonage Forum has had the most visits and posts lately. Actually it is a thread started last Thursday and titled 911 Info Erased, Now Cannot Activate. The thread was started by Vonage Forum Member chupper, who was looking for help with the issue.

"I've had my 911 addressing set up for almost a year now on one line and several months on another. When visiting my dashboard and going into features today I noticed it says 'Activate 911...' on the lines I have already activated 911 on," he writes. "Well, I figured maybe they are doing an upgrade and I need to resubmit... I resubmit the information and after submission it reads 'Error, please try again later.' " 

Chupper was concerned, and I don't blame him. 

"I called (Vonage) Customer . Svc. and the lady re-entered my information and a few min later, I got an email saying that 911 svc. had been requested," Vonage Forum Member caralmar writes. "About an hour later, I got another email saying that 911 dialing is now active."

Trowski then made another one of those helpful posts which shows why he is our current Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week. "Dial 933 from your Vonage line and it will tell you if it is enabled or not," he writes.

Several other members said that calling Vonage customer service and checking to see if the service is enabled wouldn't be a bad idea. But then chupper made a new post which put this issue into a broader perspective.

" I have not had many issues with this, no. Vonage is usually on the ball when it comes to this stuff," he writes. "Honestly, once E911 is deployed with Vonage, Voip w/ E911 will be in my opinion, more reliable in cases of emergencies & disasters than traditional 911 services. 

"If you have a battery backup on your device I think you'll be good to go," chupper adds. "I know I read reports stating that Voip was the last go out during the recent hurricanes - copper & fiber based land lines died out quick, but Voip subscribers had a bigger chunk of time."
