Vonage UK Phone Adapter

Vonage In Print News

October 14, 2005

By Paul Smart

This offers a very similar service to that I reviewed earlier this year, the main difference is that this is a portable service and can be connected to any standard router.

As far as the service is concerned it seems the same as reviewed on the 24/6/05 in the Vonage Voip article, you can either enter ‘Vonage’ into the GadgetSpeak search engine of work back through the reviews to the 24th June.

The big difference is rather than a special router being provided you get a far smaller phone adapter that itself plugs into your router. As yet nothing has been provided for users of USB modems.

I tried this unit on two routers and it was just a matter of plugging it in. The other components you need is a power socket (I knew the 8th socket on the surge strip would come in useful 30/9/05) a phone and Broadband.

The unit itself is small so small it could probably fit in a pocket but certainly a bag or briefcase easily. The phone is nothing special any phone with a standard BT plug will do. The whole point is you can take the phone adapter anywhere and any calls will be free – within your charging plan – and best of all people can ring you on your number and you could be Aberdeen, Plymouth or anywhere in between.

It is 10x10x2.5cm and weights very little. So if you move from office to office just plug in and people can ring on that number wherever you are, no forwarding, no piped music just you answering the phone straight away.

Should you be on your travels between offices then you can easily setup a number for calls to be forwarded to. Should you forget or not be able to, all calls are immediately forwarded to voicemail. The Vonage system detects that the box is either not connected or switched off, no delay it just happens even before you hear the phone ringing. All this and more easily setup from your own page on the Vonage site.

A lot of people will connect the phone adapter to a router and leave it connected. On initial setup it is important that the router is switched on before the phone adapter or it sulks. There are four LED’s on the phone adapter, phone 1, phone 2, router and power. The second phone line can be purchased for a small extra a month and it could be used for fax or even as a second line. The rear has two phone inputs Ethernet cable input and power adapter input.

I have used this unit for around a month for all my outgoing calls and the total charges (outside the plan) were just over 50p that was a couple of short calls to mobiles and others to 0870 numbers (0845 numbers are also excluded from the basic plan) Apart from that all my calls were to geographic numbers 01 and 02 and are free however long you talk and at any time of day. For full details check the original article or visit the Vonage site, details below.

The beauty for anyone else is that you can make as many calls as you like at no cost to them you are only using a little of their bandwidth, if the call is chargeable it goes on your account at Vonage. Perhaps best of all you are available should anyone call.

Setup the Vonage account, select the geographic area for the number you want, start making and receiving calls as soon as the phone adapter arrives, it is that simple.
